- I do not encourage anyone to enter culverts, unclog anything, or enter flooded areas as it can easily become deadly without the proper training
I unclog drains for fun in my spare time (I have been trained in culvert inspections for years with private co.) and I am osha trained.
Exploring anything abandoned can be dangerous or deadly without experience. I don't encourage anyone to enter any abandoned structures. Not only is safety a concern, but often times its illegal, and when possible I seek out permission from the owner or local police. I simply go to document its history before it's gone forever and I leave things the way I find them. I only take pictures and only leave footprints. I assume all the risks and responsibility before doing this. Please don't attempt to do this on your own. There could be nails, asbestos, falling concrete, soft floors, animals, or other hazards. Such muddy, icy fun!! I channeled my inner Post the other day at my local state park and cleaned out a culvert on a busy trail that the park staff never cleans out- every time we get heavy rain, the water runs over and erodes the trail. Post would be proud that it nows runs blockage free! 😊 keep inspiring us, friend!

You bring me back to my youth, we had a pond down the hill, and a road across the pond with a culvert, the neighbour had a battle for years with the beavers. We kids were happy to assist his efforts, and watching you I can feel the cold, smell the rotting vegetation. Pure heaven on memory lane. I hope your back holds out that looks a little strenous at times. Much appreciation!

I saw a video were Gate City Foundation Drainage put in a 48 inch culvert for a landowner on February 9, 2024, "Installing a large culvert pipe". After he installed it, there was a flood. He asked if we thought it was stopped up and if you could get your rake in there to clean it out. It was flowing. I thought it needed a secondary pipe like the ones you show. The homeowner said it only happens every 5 to 10 years. It would be nice if you got in touch with him to help solve the problem.
That’s interesting you saying about the ‘frost heave’. My gravel areas on my garden and paths do that in winter and I didn’t know why 😀

Your frost heave explanation was fantastic. We don't worry about these things in Washington. Central and Eastern Washington freezes pretty good but nothing like that.

Had an idea for your uncloggings: what if you jam a yardstick (or something more durable) into the water before you start to show an accurate measurement of how much the water drops. Might be hard with all the ice this time of year tho lol.
