Let's solve this once and for all. Does single or dual motor get better range? By how much? This riddle has been solved.
I was riding this scooter in the video -

Something VERY important to consider is that your rear motor will likely overheat in single motor mode if you're cruising above 20mph. I overheated my King GT rear motor on the single motor range test but didn't catch it on camera. The economy gained in single motor mode isn't worth the potential damage in my opinion. It's likely one of the reasons Dualtron scooters ONLY have dual motor mode.

Agreed, I burned a controller in single motor mode with my Speedway 5 bought in 2019 (which is minimotors brand, like dualtron), it is not worth the economy. The difference in power consumption is probably due to best acceleration (more power) in dual mode. Regenerative brakes maybe help to minimize this effect. Nice video ! 👍

Not all dual motor scooters or ebikes has that kind of overheating issues.
All or almost all of the Kaabo Wolf scooters has a design flaw that let's you easily overheats the motor when running it in single motor mode.

I use dual motor for long distances IOT maintain long term reliability. The tough nut to crack is which mode is superior for traction purposes, I constantly switch back and forth between modes when off road.

      @Damadoore Před rokem

I always use single motor on my 9+ to preserve battery but swap to dual motors for hills or boosts. The rear motor does get warm but not to the point its hot. So your video proves that single motor is indeed more efficient but you are saying it can cause it to overheat?

I think one of also the biggest things to consider is the wear and tear on your electronics. One motor is going to be getting way hotter and be used more which is going to lead to more failures. I would believe if I had a dual motor I’m probably always going to run it in dual motor

yep that`s what I`ve heard and why I opted using single motor or at least during the summer. Do you have any idea if using single motor in colder weather negates the overheating? Afaik going for 1wd also puts a strain on the controller though I`m not sure why it would.

cold weather certainly would negate some of the heat and act basically as a coolant. these hubs are all air cooled designs. most have slots in them to let air pass through, some do not but the whole hub acts as a heatsink which dissipates into ambient air, hotter the air the less cooling effect and vise versa.@@isellcrack3537

The answer depends on rider weight, if you are light enough for single motor to be efficient then single motor will take you further, but if you’re heavy and one motor struggles to push your weight then dual will take you further.

Great test video, but I am slightly surprised by the results. I did some tests on my Varla Pegasus (the only scooter I have that shows current on the display), and tested 6 modes up the same exact hill (gear 1,2,3 / single & dual each), and dual gear 1 used the least amount of current. In single motor, gear 1 was almost double the dual motor current.
So I would have expected dual to slightly outperform single.
But you are right, I think any range improvement in single motor is negated with the wear and tear on that motor. And for those that may prefer single motor for less torque, it is probably better to adjust the power level in the P-settings and still keep it in dual.

    an interesting experiment Ginger!
I have to admit...I assumed that the physics of energy would show that it would be a wash...maybe slightly better range in dual motor as you're not fighting the resistance of the front motor. I was wrong. :)
I would mention that, and I could be wrong again, but there would be more heat and wear and tear using the single motor only...so I still think it's better to always use dual motors and distribute the effort required across two motors...but I guess if you need the extra range one day, single motor it is...Hats off to you for making this video...exhausting work :) Cheers :)

I see it less about range and more about conditions. If it's wet outside then single motor (rear) is best, otherwise dual motor is best. The reason I prefer dual motors except for rain is that in single motor mode you are working that rear motor harder than normal and it's going to wear out faster than if the load were being split between both motors, especially if hills are involved.

99% of the time, people say dual motor mode is more efficient. I’m so grateful that you actually tested this. People that say dual motor mode is more efficient, have tend to be highly educated, and speak with absolute confidence.
i am amazed by your results. what is also interesting, is that i have always thought that somehow, it made sense to me that one motor would be more efficient under most conditions. especially when those conditions match one another, for each test.

You are ( sensitive word used but CZcams flagged me for it , rhymes with dumbass ) You took this video as gospel . 3rd test - use single motor mode excwept when speed drops such as going up hills, turn on dual motor mode for hills etc.. The theory is that with dual motors working there is less strain on the motor because with a single motor the single motor will call for more power to try and maintain the speed which will cause more battery drain.. Single motor would be working a lot harder for a longer period of time.. So when going up hills use dual motors, otherwise use single motors...

    • @GingerOnWheels

That was my point.. even tho the dual motor is calling for more power, would that offset the single motor having to work twice as hard to climb a hill that would also take longer because of the slow down in speed..

"Burning question..." Maybe not the best word choice during battery fire controversies, LOL. That said, in my repeated experience, when all else is equal (ambient temperature, tire pressure) in the case of steep hills, dual mode is way more efficient. Less power sucked going up hills as two motors are working together, more re-gen is added from two motors if coasting some on the way down. An exception perhaps, from mostly flat ground testing. Maybe a separate repeated hill test is warranted.

Dual motor mode translates to more torque and greater acceleration particularly at higher average speeds.
In fact i found little difference between the blistering acceleration of 2 motors, versus adding in Sport Mode when in rear wheel drive only up to around 40km/h.

A device with double motors used in single mode is completely different from a device which is actually designed as a single motor... in the latter case the real single motor will have more autonomy..
The unused wheel will not be a freewheel, there is a certain resistance compared to an electric scooter with a single original motor...

If not anything dual motors in step hills is good, the beefy scooters has so long range still though, i bought one and I am not even touching one bar of battery, 😂😂

1 scooter is too small of a sample base.
I have seen scooters and E-Bikes get better range in dual motor mode.
I have seen them getting better range in single motor mode.

Yeah this is really only useful information if you need to get that extra range to get back when you're low on battery. Then you would just ride at a slower speed in single motor mode. Otherwise, the efficiency isn't worth it and you're wearing out 1 motor more than the other

Ginger, it can be variety of problems why you overheated rear motor. As a person with mechanical background I can tell:
    1. lack of grease in the bearings, or poor quality grease, or not greasing wheel bearings would lead to produce an extra heat.
    2. bearings may be defective and as a result they produce extra heat.
For example, in my scooter back wheel bearings was to tight from the factory and I does not know that until I change them after 6 months. So, scooter used more electricity to accelerate and ride shorter distances because of that.
After buying brand new bicycle some people brought them to mechanic to adjust and grease both wheels and drive train. So, cheap bike start to run as high-speed bike. The same with scooter, if you properly prepare yours scooter it would run good. It is why so important after the warranty ended disassemble and check, clean and lubricate the electrical contacts, bearings, and other moving parts.
Only then efficiency check would be accurate.
Also I would like to add that if you got free of charge scooter, it is a charity.
    What factories/companies give for charity?
In my experience all what was returned, repacked, some defective parts changed, when product can past at the lowest level quality control, it go to charity, advertisement at store windows, etc.
Therefore, this means you should check every 200 - 300 miles mechanics and electronics on your scooter to be sure it is run properly.

single motor scooters are way more efficient. A dual motor scooter in single motor mode still has to fight the rolling resistance of the front motor.

@@slick1908 there is a lot of speculation when comes to duel motors and single but I will say get more range from my iscooter ix5 only when hit hills does then the battery drain real quick on rhe iscooter ix5 but my other duel scooter gives me more range on hills as more efficient, I think it is all about how fat you are and how you ride , and the vaults providing more efficency?????? One day I will get both my scooters scooters charged and I will do the test, using same route ,.I will.use single kn both scooters see the ra ge then I will harte again and do a duel test with the same route and post my scientific analysis of the electric scooter

Single motor will burn the controller out

    • @GingerOnWheels
      @GingerOnWheels  Před 11 měsíci +1

The controller has overheat protection and turns off power to the rear motor if you ride in single motor mode for too long. But it won't burn out the controller. Maybe if you overheated it every day for a month or something.
