In some anime or manga sites scattered across the internet, many compare Slam Dunk characters with star players or even NBA legends. Some of these comparisons feel apt and close to the real thing. There is no official statement from Inoue about these comparisons, but given his love and knowledge of basketball, perhaps he looked to NBA figures to draw his characters.

Maki is more of like Clyde Drexler/Tim Hardaway/Mitch Ritchmond
Hanagata is more like James Worthy

Maki is from kainan which is a team heavily based on lakers just by design and team dynamics. Maki is 6'1 and the best point guard in the kanagawa prefecture. PURELY a point guard. Sendoh is def not magic
