  • I bought a Bronco Raptor - is it the most capable, turn-key overland rig available on the market today? Running 37 inch BFGoodrich KO2's from the factory, locking front and rear differentials, sway bar disconnect and a very punchy motor - I think it's hard to beat! But will it still run at 100,000 miles? I guess we'll see!

I have just over 21k miles on my Bronco Raptor and it’s been perfect. I have a smile on my face every minute I’m behind the wheel. Take a look at the PACS drawer system from AAL before you go goose gear. The PACS drawer pivots so you don’t lose access to the tire jack and storage area under the rear floor. Has mounting points on the top if you order the mil-spec coating. And Jason I’d be happy to send you the AAL battery tray you mentioned in the video. I bought one and never used it - would be happy to send it to you as a gift. Have watched your videos for years and happy to help out a fellow LDS. 😊

Other camera modes allow you to see your front tire placement in D or the rear tire placement in R. You should go to the Raptor offroadeo in Vegas. I have not gone yet. I just took my wife’s Bronco Sport in for service yesterday. The dealership had four Bronco Raptors on the lot. One in this mossy, gold flake metallic green, almost bronze-ish. Absolutely gorgeous. I was mesmerized. It was $93k although Ford is getting desperate to sell them. ‘23 models are $10k off.

As an owner of Bronco Raptor 4A does still make it crab when completing tight turns as the computer thinks your slipping so it sends power to the front wheels. So it's recommend you stay in 2H unless on a slippery surface (snow, mud, ice, etc.) as it will likely damage the transfer case if you keep it in 4A always.

RE reliability if it's anything like the gen2/3 F150 Raptors you can expect a pretty overbuilt frame and suspension, some minor gremlins and a big question mark on long term reliability of the powertrain. I personally just grabbed a cheap Floodford 7 year/100k warranty and have then proceeded to send it. I think sell when the warranty is up being the smart move. Congrats and enjoy it!

One of the gentlemen who attends a local scottsdale cars and coffee, is a retired Boeing engineer, worked at ford etc. His early run bronco, had reliability problems, and he eventually swapped a 5.0L into his, and currently is running a 5.2L iirc, things now reliable and a hoot to see and hear running.
He also has a Raptor R f150, and a 2dr base bronco. an LC79 crew truck, a jimny, and a hijet jumbo truck for his little ranch property back in AZ. Hes building a 1968 Mustang fastback right now, with a 7.3L godzilla, and a 2001 is300 with a new 3.5L Titan 2jz, he daily drives a k swapped mini and a kia soul truck chop up, awd, with a k swap as well. Crazy inventive old man who gets bored pretty easily hahaha.

It was in the Lincoln Aviator and Ranger Raptor as well. Generally though it is a stroked 2.7L Ecoboost which was used with great success in the F-150. I'm a little Leary about anything built since 2020 but it will be as dependable as anything similar. Keep in mind your reference for Toyota reliability is based on trucks built before 2019. Besides being a 20 year old design and having all the bugs worked out those Toyotas didn't have enough power to break anything. Modern Toyotas with twin turbochargers built since the pandemic are turning out to be a different animal.
Keep in mind that the Bronco has Ranger underpinnings, but the Braptor has F-150 underpinnings. That rear Dana 50 is similar to Ford's Super 8.8 but it is floating like Ford's HD 9.75" (which is similar to a Dana 60)

Ford's offroad focus has always been in Desert Racing. If you look at other offroad racing trucks it's all about wheel travel so you can drive faster in the whoops. The bigger the tire, the smaller the hole, is a common phrase in desert racing. That's why Trophy Trucks now run 40" tires.

My background is with government fleet, and we had F150's with the EcoBoost 3.5 for our police department. Two issues, and your motor is a little different and newer so it may not apply: variable timing actuators, and the direct injection needs to be cleaned every 25-30K miles to keep it purring. Other than that, the EcoBoost motor family seems to be real reliable! Can't wait to see what how your build this one up!

They lost me at IFS. I want old school, solid axle. IFS and rack and pinion steering tend to fail in catastrophic ways. I've limped a separated adjustable trackbar out of the bottom of Rausch Creek trail system and down the highway 15 miles to our camp spot. I recently had a passenger steering ball joint slip out of the knuckle because a castle nut wasn't torqued right. I didn't crash even though my passenger tire was flapping in the breeze, and you could imagine input to the driver side was limited. I just slowed down, continued to drive until I found a side road and was able to ginger it out of the way. Try that with an IFS.

Forced induction tends to mitigate the altitude air density somewhat but I haven’t personally seen a direct comparison of how much effect it has on acceleration times. 1 second is a big difference, though I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s all it was because a very quick google search is showing that the general rule of thumb is 3-3.5% per 1000ft. Only drawback I can see is the gas mileage and the range...not really suited for overlanding.

Think of it like a reverse commercial. I paid THEM to feature it.... But maybe Ford won't hate me for sparking an honest conversation on it's long term reliability and invite me to something someday...

I've heard the same, sadly. Lots of cracked cylinder heads and cracked valves/valvetrain.

@@SwellRunner Well just be careful. Matt Carriker had one fail on him it had 50 miles on it. Many more have gone that way as well. His started with an oil leak. If you search "bronco raptor engine issues" you will get some interesting reading unfortunately. I truly wish it had a good powerplant as the looks and versatility are great.

The Bronco Raptor is a far superior vehicle to any Jeep out of the box. If it wasn't for Jeep give buyers a $15,000 rebate on Gladiators and other models they wouldn't be selling anything right now.

Omg, say it ain’t so!! You see, most times I’d say you’re right, but in certain cases….a vehicle could be so capable/awesome, that it doesn’t matter. Having extensive wheel time with a 392 and this raptor…….id choose this any day of the week. Stuffing a v8 into a wrangle is a novel thing, but this thing is so comprehensively worked over, it’s just on a different level. Try driving one, instead of just uttering nonsense.

Yeah you should of bought Lexus GX 550 it’s nicer will last longer and resale value will be 2x better. The raptor bronco is fast yeah but it’s not faster then jeep SRT or the jeep track hawk. Smarten up buy Lexus or Toyota.
