    I have to reply as an owner of a lucid air touring with 6000 miles. paid 86000 with the $7500 tax credit that was availalbe for early reservation holders and orders before the end of 2022. (since then the price is back down with very attractive leases making it the same as my price or better with free pricey options on some models in stock). Best car I've ever had. No complaints at all. The Edmunds AGT car was an early build. I was happy to wait for the later Touring version for this reason. all the OTA's have been minutes, easily done when you park after a commute. The build quality is on par with any other Luxury car I've had including BMW, Mercedes, Acura, Porsche and Genesis. I never had issues with the soft close doors. Why even lock with the keyfob when it auto locks and opens when you walk away or approach it with the phone , lucid cardkey or the keyfob in your presence? It does not have level 3 yet but does have adequate handsfree mode for highway driving, as good as my Genesis. The touring is rated at 412 miles at 100% charge but Lucid advises 80% max charge for daily drives saving the 100% for long trips. I have free charging at EA for 3 years so I charge at one near my work every 3 days which is about 180miles total distance. I go from 10 to 70% state of charge in about 15 minutes for a final range of over 210 miles the way I drive which is 80mph+ on the highways and usually the fasted on the street without being unsafe or obnoxious to others. Usually first off the line by far at any stop and go opportunity. If driven conservatively I have no doubt it'll do at least 350 miles starting at a 100% but since you need to get to a charger probably 300 miles comfortably between stops on a long trip. Charging infrastructure is getting better and EA is replacing their chargers with new 350kwh ultrafast chargers so it's only going to get better. The fact that EV sales are slowing is also working in my favor as there won't be as many to compete for charging away from home.
    Maintenance cost is zero, except for tires for the first 3 years. First scheduled maintenance is at 20000 miles.
    The benefit of larger battery is not just max range but better charging speeds as the max KWH delivered is higher at the lower the state of charge, which is why I rarely charge above 70% unless I have nothing else to do but sit in the car for another 5 minutes to get to 80%. Also you can stay in the ideal SOC for battery preservation since you don't charge to Max or deplete it to Min everytime.
    I don't see the appeal for any other Luxury EV like the Taycan, EQs, Etrons, or even the Ioniq/EV6s, because if the max range is 240 miles then you reallistically only can use 180 miles of that and to get it you have to charge for longer times at a public charging station. I know cause I see them plugged in next to me before I strart and stay after I leave. Plus the Lucid is much more spacious and rides better than all of them. The way Edmunds has been using this car on the drag strip is fun but that's a lot of wear and tear on a personal car that most won't subject theirs to. The fact that it has had no mechanical faults other than trim and door issues is a testament to quality of the drivetrain and the chassis.

It just wasn't of use.

    My Lucid Air just hit 16,000 miles. My steering wheel also had a creak in it. Lucid sent a mobile tech to my house and replaced it with a new one. Problem solved. The car has been an absolute joy to own. It’s quiet, comfortable, and fast. 400 miles without a charge is no problem. I’m not sure why Edmunds is so negative about this car. It’s totally okay to *not like* the car. It just seems like you spend a lot more time being annoyed by the small niggles (and moreover, not actually trying to fix them by calling service for a mobile visit) than you do enjoying the car.

    • @bW9taeH4
      @bW9taeH4 Před 10 měsíci +10

      @@edmundscars I've had that level of problems with other cars in the six figure range, and I expect that there might be some problems. As long as they will be fixed under warranty without inconveniencing me much, I care more about how much I like the car for day to day use. If this were 1985 and you were talking about how often the car broke down or stalled out on the road, I'd be looking for something more reliable. I don't know how many days you owned the car, but I'd estimate that if it needed one or two shop visits, or visits from Lucid to a customer's home, that would be, in rounded terms, zero percent of the days that you owned the car. And in real world terms, it might be one more time than one that ranks up high on the reliability list.
      It seems to me that Edmunds, CR and others have gotten so hung up in the 1950s to 1980s mentality of how much weight to give to "reliability" that you fail to consider that how close the repair shop is to my dentist's office could be a bigger real world factor these days. Stop acting as if something that was once a huge consideration when buying a car is at the same level. Other people are buying cars that will need a dozen shop visits over five years for oil changes and brake jobs alone.
      You need to check a calendar to see what century this is. Lucid owners aren't calling their bosses to tell them that their car won't start for the third time this month. I've lived through that era. There's a reason why reliability should have weighed as a major factor back then, but these days it literally has nothing to do with whether you can rely on the vehicle.
      Edmund's needs to wake up and realize that it's a matter of how much people will like the car overall that matters. I bought a Chevy Cruze for my daughter and it had bad sun visors. Between the day in the shop for them to figure out that they needed to change them, to the return visit when they had the parts, to the four times I used the courtesy shuttle to the delays in traffic and not having things fixed at the time promised, I could write paragraph after paragraph about how it was a bigger waste of my time than all the problems you experienced put together.

    E.G. We know EPA testing is always generous, yet Edmunds seems surprised when every car falls short. Just measure the range tests as a percentage against its epa score and then compare that percentage to the market average 🤷‍♂️

    465 miles is close to 500 miles. Make it make sense. All cars are subject to falling short of their standards but that's more due to the car being rushed to production of which there are many manufacturers that have done the same thing. I do understand that you expect high quality for the price that you spent for the car but it's quite possible that you got an early version that wasn't up to par and that's something that happens even with MB, BMW, Audi and so forth and so on. Once they clean up the quality issues and get it on par with the OTA updates. Hopefully Lucid will be around for the long-term.

  • @FrenchTexan007

    The Edmunds reviewers come across as a bit obnoxious in their reactions (a bit over the top IMO) to what seem like fairly minor issues. I get that it's an expensive car where fit and finish should be exemplary, but I suspect most Lucid / Rivian buyers understand there will be some issues with a new car from a new manufacturer

    • @bW9taeH4
      @bW9taeH4 Před 10 měsíci +2

      True. So far I have a few minor issues that aren't quite at that level, will be fixed, but aren't important enough that I can't wait a month for a convenient appointment. My Model S, on paper, might be the least "reliable" car I've owned. But in the classic sense of reliability, meaning that I could depend on it to get me places when I needed it to, it never had a problem that kept me from using it. Early on, Tesla had excellent service, so it was easy to have them fix things, give me a Model S loaner, and return the car to my house when it was done. So even with a list of minor issues, I was inconvenienced a lot less than with previous cars that were much more reliable on paper. My Model 3 was one of the first few hundred made, had its share of things that needed changing, but almost none of it affected usage. On paper it was a lot. But I had things fixed either in my own garage or when I brought the car in for something else not problem related and would have been there anyway. In terms of things that affected use, they were barely significant. So having cars that are less "reliable" on paper doesn't mean that there's an ordeal to owning them. With the Lucid, it's too early to tell, but the problems so far won't affect my usage of the car.
      I'm old enough to remember when reliability was high on the list of factors to consider when buying a car, because nobody wanted a car that kept stalling out or that you couldn't depend on to get you places. Now, "reliability" comes down to whether a company needs to send somebody to your home to fix a few minor issues. The idea of getting a car that I'd like less day in and day out to avoid answering the phone once or twice when a tech shows up to fix something minor makes no sense to me.

    Should review it after 100k miles, 200k miles, 300k miles to obtain more realistic statistics. Like battery life, motor performance, body structure/suspension , etc. Someone had reported Tesla model S replaced 4 motors and 3 battery packs after 300k miles. The Air GT has two motors. It may last longer before the motor has problem.

    • @bW9taeH4
      @bW9taeH4 Před 8 měsíci

      I have a relatively early Model S. Tesla's drive train quality is excellent. It wasn't quite the case when I got my car. The drive trains themselves were good quality. But the original bearings became noisy and loud.
      Instead of dropping the drive trains, disassembling them and rebuilding them, Tesla swapped them out and got the customers back on the road faster. By 2016, Tesla had much better ceramic bearings and very reliable drive trains. And people with cars from that era have had their drive trains replaced.
      Tesla could have avoided this by inconveniencing owners and replacing bearings after longer service visits. Then you'd be saying that some owners had bearing problems early on and I'd tell you that those bearings are no longer used.

Why is it somehow classified as a 'fail' when the vehicle doesn't achieve that number during exclusively highway driving? It shouldn't take years for journalists to learn that EV's consume the most energy at highway speeds.

    Thanks for the nice review.... I took delivery of a 23 G.T. in July. I've had NONE of the trim or quality anomalies you experienced. Do I have complaints(?), sure, little things (like key fob has to be within about 1 car-length to work (no biggie). My key fob works flawlessly in it's functions (as long as you're in range of the car). OTA updates over the last two months have improved range estimates a lot. For example when I leave home (Elevation 9,000 ft) and drive to the 31 miles away (elev 5,600ft) , the car predicts I will actually arrive with MORE miles on the clock than when I start that 31 mile trip(!). Sure nuff, it's always right within a mile or two. Conversely, when I make the 31 mile climb back to the house, it says I'll lose about 60 miles of range and again, it's right within a mile or two. They're evidently factoring elevation changes in to the formula. So, things are improving and my later version has probably enjoyed refinement of those trim issues. No steering wheel squeak or lose panels. Keep up the good work!

    Since day one Edmunds has been out to dog on the Lucid. I don't know if they bought in to the "hate the expensive car" meme or what the motivation is. Whatever the case, all I can say is that my personal ownership experience has been completely different. Like most owners, I ordered the 21" wheels. Edmunds inexplicably ordered the 19s. Other than that our cars are identical.
    It does seem like Edmunds expected something quite different than what the Lucid was built to be. What that is I can't be sure. No one should be buying this car assuming it will be 100% at this time. This was the same for Tesla (who still hasn't fixed many of it's quality control problems), and the same for many premium exotic brands like Rolls Royce. All things considered I think it is fair to say Lucid is on a great trajectory even if their are clearly some rough spots to iron out. While the price and quality aren't hand in hand, this is brand new car company and and compared to ancient behemoths Toyota, MB and others, looks like Lucid has done a good job. They have a decent and promising product IMO. Hopefully Release 2 of the car will work out the kinks.

      The advantage of something like a Lucid or a Tesla is that even if the bugs aren't all worked out, the car will improve over time. My Model S is literally one of the first made with Autopilot (ones made the day before or earlier in the day didn't have it) and I've seen it start with its share of bugs, and they went away over time, plus I ended up with lots of features that didn't exist and weren't announced when the car came out. There was a hardware issue with the original drive trains, and the car now has a 2016 drive train, which works great.
      My Model 3 is from 2017 (VIN 5xx) and I watched the software improve. There were a handful of hardware changes, but Tesla made the changes for me even without anything going wrong or me seeing problems, and a couple of minor things failed under warranty. I did replace the side repeater cameras on my own because the new ones work better with the side view when signalling. Since that feature didn't exist when I bought the car, I couldn't call it a defect, but the bottom line is that I have lots of features with all the early bugs worked out.
      My Lucid is too new for me to go by experience, but I have gone over the list of things that were fixed before I got mine, and the video covers some of those. No hardware changes were needed, so an early car wouldn't have been a problem. I did wait to buy it even though I could have gotten it early with my early reservation. But I wanted to wait for Dream Drive Pro to be where it is now before I bought it. It's not perfect but it will improve.
      With any car, the next model year or generation will do more or have more features. These cars are the first ones where I didn't get stuck with what I had or missed out on later features...except that the charge flap on my Model S doesn't close by itself. That was introduced later. It wouldn't have been worth holding off for a year or two on buying a car if I had known that feature would come.

      I held off on the 2022 and waited for the 2023. By then, Lucid had addressed those things that concerned me enough to make me wait. They were fixed by the time I got my car, and it turned out to be all software fixes so I would have been fine with an earlier car.
      There are still a number of things that I'd like to see improve, but I expect that to happen over time. I can't imagine that Lucid would ignore the list of annoyances that current owners complain about.

    I suspect that to work at Edmunds, one might require a degree in complaining with a minor in whining. The review lacks professionalism that doesn't stem from its evaluation of the car, but rather from the approach taken. Even when identifying positive aspects of the car, they managed to twist them into negatives. Taking this review at face value becomes challenging, especially after reading the reviews of true owners in the comments.

    I think the early buyers of this car will expect teething pains. However, if lucid wants to be successful they need to expand to normal buyers who won't put up with shoddy build quality. I'd be interested to know what Lucid has done with their newer cars to address the build quality.

    • @bW9taeH4
      @bW9taeH4 Před 8 měsíci +2

      You have that backwards. Ordinary buyers don't go around checking door seam tolerances with a micrometer and declare that there are build quality issues. They wouldn't have a clue what people are talking about. Ordinary buyers get a car because they like it better than other cars.
      I don't know whether or not you'd consider me an early buyer or not, but I had a list of problems with my 2023. I don't remember how many, but it was well above average. I took the car to Lucid, they gave me an Air GT loaner that did everything my car does, and I got my car back. Everything was fixed. Nothing was serious or kept me from using the car. There were a couple of things that you could describe as "build quality." The charge port cover and one of the door handles weren't perfectly aligned. So they fixed those along with everything else on the list.
      There will always be people who look at these one time items and act as if someone is better off getting a car that they like less day in and day out, but had the car had a single problem (making it far above average for reliability) it still would have needed the same shop visit. In real life, people don't care about your FUD. They don't care about needing a service visit as long as things are taken care of. And if it eliminates 14 service visits for oil changes and brake jobs that they'd have with something else, then having a few minor issues won't even register.

      @@bW9taeH4 I think you have a good point and you gave a very thoughtful reply. I don't have the money to be purchasing a Lucid or a car of that range. My thought was that someone buying a Lucid would be cross shopping with a Mercedes S-Class or BMW 7 series and would not tolerate build quality issues. However, if you are looking for a great electric car at that price range Lucid is probably the way to go.

    • @bW9taeH4
      @bW9taeH4 Před 8 měsíci

      @@daveromanyshyn1170 I have some trim pieces that aren't perfectly aligned, but I wouldn't buy a car that I'd like less on a day to day basis to avoid that. On paper, my car had above average "reliability" issues. But what that really meant was that on my one and only service visit, they fixed a small list of things instead of only one or two, and they weren't ones that affected the use of my car.
      When I was young, "reliability" was a big issue because nobody wanted a car that broke down frequently or kept stalling out at intersections and had trouble starting back up. These days, people still want to give it the same weight as it got in the 1970s even though it has almost nothing to do with day to day usage but with a few minor one time inconveniences. In my case, it meant keeping the loaner car a bit longer but it was another Air GT.
      I'm sure that there are people who would prefer those other two cars, and it's fine if they like them better. Most reviewers differ on that, from what I've read, but it doesn't mean that those are bad cars. I think that the biggest advantage they have is name recognition.
      If you can't afford a Lucid, keep in mind that there are much cheaper EVs with 300+ miles of range. It will be overkill for everyday driving, and on a trip long enough that you'd need a charge, it will overlap a mealtime and restroom break anyway. So you might be able to make trips just as fast.

The EPA test are really more about being able to compare car to car and less about real world range at this point unless they update testing. I think that should have been stated more so people understand not to expect the EPA range.

    You really should announce a disclaimer. "we beat the hell out of this car, so some of the issues we encounter you may not", because I'm coming up on 1 year now too, and I have not experienced any of your issues. Right from the get go I got 470 mile range with my 21's and still getting it. I don't need to prove how fast the car is, I know it's fast, so no racing. If you are still using the key fob, then you must be OG drivers. Phone as the key and boom no issues. As for level 3 self drive, you just compared it to other companies that have decades of reputation on their side not to mention super deep pockets. Lucid is still in startup mode, and quite frankly cannot afford for one of its cars hitting a school bus or a person, whereas the other car companies can because of their line up of other cars. Think about it, Lucid has to be really careful. They will get to it.
    My biggest complaints of the car are the following:
    1. The AC system has to relearn what vents are selected at any given time. I have made customer service aware of this situation many times, and this past summer in Texas, I complained a lot!
    2. Dashcams not active. Bugs the hell out of me that I had to install a 3rd party dashcam on this car. Customer support assures me it is on the list to update, so as long as I'm protected, I'm
    good.
    3. Stereo system. The speakers on this car are terrible, plane and simple. ZERO bass response period. My Ford Fusion Energi had an excellent system, and many of the songs enjoyed in that car,
    I just skip over in the Air GT. They are focused solely on the Dolby Atmos system, and while I can listen John Williams sometimes, other times I want to kick it but can't.
    4. Steering column blocks camera from seeing you. Poor Design. Sadly this is something that will have to be lived with. Nothing short of a total replacement will fix this issue.
    5. HomeLink system. Whomever did the programming on this needs to go back to programming school. I showed the techs exactly what is issue is with my gate, and how to fix it, but I was
    ignored. Basically, the transmitter sends a signal for too long, so when the gate starts to open, it gets the continued signal from the first transmit, and it stops.
    6. No real world though process to actual situations. I recommended that they tie the blinds to the light sensor that activates the lights. This option would lower the shades/blinds when they are
    no longer needed. I noticed it right out of the gate, but sadly their engineers didn't. We'll see if they make the mod.
    It should be noted that my Tech told me that LUCID over ordered on its massage chairs, and will be offering them to Air owners as an upgrade from the non-massage chairs. They will also get a special OTA upgrade to their software for the controls. This is a VERY cool thing for the company to do! Especially when you have some companies charging a monthly fee for seat warmers.
    I keep my GT in Smooth mode constantly, more than enough power when or if I need it, and drive it like it like a luxury sedan should be driven, with a touch of class.
    Good Luck to you.

For most people, that's over 90% of their charging. Never having to go to a gas station is a big saving of time and money. And I can plug in faster than my garage door can close so I literally don't waste a second doing it. Aside from the fact that the Lucid can add 200 miles of range in 12 minutes, if I start a trip with 500+ miles of range, even if I don't get rated range chances are still slim that I'd need to stop for a charge. It's more likely that on road trips, either I'll charge when I'm stopped anyway for lunch, or not even bother and just plug in when I get to the hotel.

    Lucid is charging more for range and speed with their trims, they won't have a cheaper version of Air for a while and I'm worried that they won't make it long enough for that Gravity vehicle to make it to market. Maybe VW or some other automaker buy them when it is all said and done.

    All that upfront cost at what justifcation? Electric? Luxury? Both? I rather get a super fuel efficient hybrid and not compete with other EV owners, and price gouging Chargepoint and EVgo.

    That`s unfortunate. I was seriously thinking about buying an Air Grand Touring. Lucid has absolute killer purchase offers out. But those issues would drive me insane at this price level. Guess an I7 it is for now.

    I would be very curious to know what the average speed and temperature was for Edmund's range test. Generally when an EV falls short on a range test, it's all highway miles. Drag increases exponentially, so small speed changes can have a large range impact.

    • @bW9taeH4
      @bW9taeH4 Před 10 měsíci +2

      @@theborski Yes, and I can describe the process from experience. You are sitting on your couch and the phone rings. It's the service person telling you that he's outside and needs you to open the garage door. With the current Lucid app, I can't do that, so it might mean having to walk to the garage, unless I have something like the myQ app. With a Tesla, I could just use the Tesla app. So I'd have the major inconvenience of letting somebody in. Or I could save the trouble and park in the driveway.

      With the Model S, I got it when gasoline was cheaper than it is now. I used to pay $75/week for gasoline. That was in 1994. I still have the car. Had the prices been constant, I would have spent over $32,000 on gasoline by now. Instead, I got a car with free supercharging. But I still charge at home most of the time because depreciation alone from driving to and from Superchargers would have been higher than paying for electricity. Instead, I got solar. Had I not gotten solar, my electric bills over the time since then would have been as much as I paid to get solar installed, and that was for household usage. Now, I've passed the break even point and have essentially free electricity for the next couple of decades.
      When I factor in the incentives at the time I got the car, which were over $10k, it made it a better deal than buying a car in the mid $40k range. Without the tax credit, I probably wouldn't have gone to the showroom to look at it, but with everything, it was a good deal.
      If you look at the price for the Lucid Air Pure, the cost of gasoline, and what it would cost to keep it for a decade, it might be substantially cheaper than an ICEV that's half the price.

      @@bW9taeH4 It doesn't surprise me that most people can't do the simple math. it's not just the cost of gas, the cost of maintenance on a Luxury ICE over the course of 8 years of ownership is thousands of dollars, with the crazy labor rates at dealer service centers and part costs. I have a 9 year old porsche which has to be the worst of them all, and that's for a car that has been mechanically perfect. Brakes, fluids, plugs, shocks, and bushings plus cost of labor for maintenance has been over $20K. I still love it to death but it will be the only ICE car I will keep. Lucid has it figured out. They just need to make a more compelling product for the masses, i.e. SUV and bring the cost down with manufacturing scale. The drivetrain is all interchangeable and dead reliable from what I've experienced. With the long term commitment from Saudi MBS venture capital funding they should have the most patient and resourceful corporate angel investor in the world as money literally bubbles up from the ground for them. Few billion is a rounding error for them.

    Autopilot is one of the keys to Tesla’s success. I’ll never buy another EV without autonomous features. If you’ve never lived with it you just don’t know how useful it is when you just need someone to hold the wheel for a minute, to pick something up, deal with the kids in the back, send a text (where legal), on long monotonous stretches, eat a burger, and especially in 2mph bumper to bumper jams or any kind of line up… it is a god send!
