  • For our first video in our 2-part series on Gremlins 2 we cover the genesis of the movie and the ideas that made it what it into the final product we saw. This video covers the release, merchandise and explores several deleted scenes and first 20 minutes of the film itself.
    Also note there is a quick error in the video when we mistakenly call Marla Bloodstone's character Marla Singer. We must have been thinking of Fight Club. Regardless it's there and we acknowledge the oopsies. We prefer to not edit videos once they are released.

    I find Gremlins 2 so much more enjoyable when you realize that Joe Dante made it specifically to make sure the franchise ended and as a giant middle finger to the studio executives who wanted the sequel in the first place.

      @@KingSidJames I honestly think the SNES is the best console ever made with some games you can play over and over again. Super Metroid and Zelda were just amazing. One of my favorites on it was Actraiser, Alien 3 and Super Punch Out. It's just an iconic system.

      I am from the 8 bit computer generation (C64,Spectrum,Amstrad) that promised arcade quality games, but fell short.

    That summer was absolutely jam packed with huge movies - It was a bad decision to try to take on Dick Tracey alone but with Total Recall, Back to the Future III, Pretty Woman and Turtles all in cinemas at the same time and Robocop 2, Days of Thunder and Die Hard 2 all due to be released in the next three weeks it was just insanity to throw Gremlins 2 {a Spoof remember} into all of that!
    It would have done much better as a mid October release opposite Night of the Living Dead and three-four weeks before Dances With Wolves and Home Alone were released on Nov 9th and 16th.

    Gremlins 2 and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 had to be the weirdest sequels ever. I love both, don't take me wrong, but at the same time I miss the serious tone of the originals. The concept of antisequels is weird. It's funny, but very weird, and I think they need a big creative mind, total creative freedom and a big budget to make them work.

  • @GiantBoarMonster
    @GiantBoarMonster Před měsícem +2

    For whatever reason, growing up we only had Gremlins 2 on VHS, not the original. Thusly, I've seen Gremlins 2 many more times than Gremlins 1, not to say Gremlins 1 wasn't lightning in a bottle. However, Gremlins 2 is still my favorite of the two and in my top list of comedies. All that creative freedom certainly boosted it. Now that early shot of Gizmo walking on the sidewalk, it always greatly impressed me when I was kid and I recall wondering how they did that. Probably it has to do with the quality of the VHS and the old TVs at the time, obscuring the faults at the time, which we now see in ultra clear quality. And I'll always be enamored with Marla, and redheads, and curly haired women. The 90's were rife with curly haired women wasn't it? Wish it would come back in style.

    • @RepresentThis
      @RepresentThis  Před měsícem +2

      The women were very attractive in the 80's for sure. I seem to remember the majority of folks back then really cared about their appearance and worked hard for self-improvement. I think that is why manly men like Arnold and Stallone were so popular back then. I think the majority of the population wouldn't be caught dead in their pajamas and underwear hanging out in public during that time. There were much higher standards.

    Gremlins 2 has a special place in my family's history, growing up in the late-80's / 90's. My two brothers and numerous cousins LOVED this franchise, and we all had our own Gizmo impersonation. G2 especially is a favorite. So much so, that I was a guest on a friend's podcast where people would debate whether a sequel was better than the original. I feel like I came out on top of that one.
    As a kid, it was just the Looney Tunes wackiness, and of course, Gizmo. As an Adult, it's one of my favorite meta-commentaries on Filmmaking, Sequels & Consumerism. One of my favorite jokes is when the fire breaks out and the building says, “Oldest of Man's Mysteries, Giver of warmth, Destroyer of forests, right now this building is on fire. Yes! The building is on fire!" God, I love this movie. Having grown up in the excess of the 80's and the Balanced National Budget of the 90's, this film is intrinsic to my being.
    I had no clue that was all an original set with working elevators and real shops. That's so unique and awesome. I knew alot of the BTS stuff, but that one slipped past. The world-building in these films is honestly great. From the mall TCBY (shout out Jasson Presson) to the Clamp branding, it all feels real. I just love that Dante used the constraints making this movie as further commentary. He truly made such a bizarre piece of cinema and it's wholly underrated. He's wholly underrared. I'm just glad Sam Raimi made it mainstream. Anyway, I could go on & on, but you said it all.
    Thank you for your work! I appreciate what you do.

    • @RepresentThis

      Disney put about 46 million into the movie and hoped it would be a franchise rivaling Indiana Jones. Though the film was a success on paper their marketing was phenomenal as the movie was pushed everywhere. So, no doubt Disney lost some money on Dick Tracy the question is how much. In the end the film would make $162.7 million which was fair for the time.

    Sorry for being That Guy,but...The Redhead was named Marla Bloodstone.Marla Singer was in Fight Club.Seemingly minute inconsistencies such as these may hurt your credibility & your channel (What else is non-factual???).
    Everyone makes mistakes,but when it's presented in this form...it gives birth to B.S. theories like The Mandala Effect,which is just alot of people having a shared experience of incorrectly remembering something because it sounds factual...creating confusing,ignorant debates that have no right existing. Alittle misinformation goes a long way.
