In the month of December in 1946, Sardar Patel had a long discussion with civil servant V.P. Menon. In the meeting, Menon requested Sardar Patel to accept partition. He thought that United India was an illusion because Jinnah will never give up the demand for partition. It is better to divide the country rather than to go towards a civil war between Hindus and Muslims.
If the country was partitioned at a later time, then no body could guess what will be the map of India. If partition happened in the presence of Britishers, then Jinnah could not claim the Hindu majority areas of Punjab and Bengal. Power could be transferred easily and all this can happen peacefully. Two governments, Two constitutions and Two countries !
After this Sardar Patel told Menon that he will try that this resolution gets accepted by Congress.
