Try creating 8 bar loops or 16 bar loops. Including longer chord progressions also. Longer loops will feel more like a song than a short 4 bar loop so it might spark more ideas later on.
Also take off the producer hat and put on the dj hat once you have all your parts and wanna focus on arrangements.

I absolutely LOVE this mindset! I've finished so many more songs after adopting this. 15 years back I would have had this notion of "I have to invent the wheel every time I write a song, everything else is stealing". That creates so much constriction.

Year old comment but literally! It’s been what’s stopping me from just making music for so long, when really so long as you’re making your own sound, the arrangement is just the dimensions of your art

my preferred method - - Jam and record it all. It will sound bad for a bit then get good...then get bad again. Take the bit that was good and remix those stems. Intro, build, release, breakdown, build, outro. Give the stems to friends and have them also do remixes - they will think of things you didnt - now you have a B Side to.

I second this! recently for any beat that I feel is okay but not great, I wait a day or two, then I come back to it, I will figure out okay what is the best part of this beat? What’s the “star”? I make that the jumping off point and then destroy & rebuild everything else around it until its better than it was

This is really a great tip. When I first got into producing years ago, like many, I struggled with arrangement of tracks.
What I used to do as an exercise is similar to this "tracing" idea. I would import and correctly warp a track from an artist I liked. Then using empty midi tracks and blocks, I'd paint in what sounds where playing and when. So like chords progression A, B; melody A, B; various Drums; bassline; FXs; vocal lines; etc.
After doing this, you can zoom all the way out and BAM! You've got a very complete and in depth skeleton of the track in question. What's left is almost a kind of "paint by numbers" to just filling up those empty blocks with your own sounds to complete the production.

Been doing the block method the past year and went from being stuck in the loop stage and folders filled with “idea loops” to finishing 4 tracks in a weekend. When I say finished I mean the arrangement, and first draft. Before I come back a few days later to fine tune. I find hinting elements before the first major drop is key. Letting everything breathe. Chipping away at the track. 🙏🏼 love the content!

"Tracing song" is an absolutely correct definition of that arranging-style :) I remember how I used to "trace" The Chemical Brothers - Leave Home around 20 years ago. That was my first experiments of creating tracks. Acid by Sonic Foundry (I guess) was my first DAW, or Fruity loops maybe. As a result I created another track with nothing similar to "Leave Home". A bit later Session-workflow in Remix Live (a predecessor of Ableton Live) was a dramatic game-changer for me. Today you can make tracks in Session-workflow even using Korg Gadget on your iPad which is totally cool! Especially when you have a super combo setup like Ableton+Push-2

Not sure how i found this, but damn-wish i had known about you sooner. What a fantastic presentation-your voice, demeanor, manner of explaining things.... Before you went into your painters analogy, i was thinking the same thing. This is an idea i thought of a long time ago, but tried to implement in a different way. But, yes, you're right-there are a billion songs out there, and using one out of that billion as a 'roadmap' for designing your own is in no way 'cheating' and it won't result in anything but your own music. Song structure isn't that unique, so mimicking a set of broad patterns is harmless. // I'm subscribing, but now i have to go back to see everything you've put out and i have a feeling i'm going to be very busy for a very long time.... Thank you.

Sounds like the Super Loop (I think ill gates?) process where you have all elements playing in a 8/16 bar loop and then you mute out elements and bring them in. Also add automation on top or add one shots where you see fit. The DAW really excels at this method. This is such great advice! Arrangement is the skill that gets you out of the loop.

Hey Ricky, great spot as always. Can you maybe touch more on being an Ableton user who doesn’t really like session view? I’m recent to the Ableton game and it constantly feels like everyone is always focused on clips and scenes. I realize most people get Ableton specifically for that feature, but I’m not really feelin’ it and could use a pro user like yourself to put things into perspective. If that makes any sense. Hahah! ✌🏽

@@RickyTinez I find it’s pretty kool to build up drum loops of different sorts and then be able to fire them over to the arranged timeline. But the fun and convenience sorta ends there for me. It just struck me that all your vids pretty much use arrange only and I vibe with that!

    • @Daphoid
      @Daphoid Před 3 lety +4

The arrangement view and session view are just different ways of working with music. To me, arranging is the whole song as a single entity that you build (or trace) as a living entity. Its the more traditional way of dealing with audio.
Session view to me always feels more live performing friendly. Your clips or groups of clips may make a complete song but I always feel like its a collection of lego pieces that work together to build a thing. Whereas the arrangement view is a watercolour painting that you flow together.
"Jamming" has also become a lot more popular in recent years, instead of focusing on making full tracks in arrangement view, where the performance of that track is really just playing it - maybe soloing over top - turning effects off and on. Session view allows you to take a bunch of pieces which by themselves aren't full songs, but you trigger them in a pleasing way on a live stream for 10 minutes and BAM, record it, and you've got a live session to sell as an EP :).
I might not be explaining that right, but to me they're just different - If you're new to ableton, there's nothing wrong with using one or the other or both (some folks open the second window in Ableton and work in both side by side.

    • @J-Hz

Very inspiring. Taking sound designs from one song and mashing it up with arrangement ideas from another could also work.

Really inspiring stuff, even if you're just using this method to break out of a loop momentarily and rekindle some inspiration seems very helpful, and as we can see it didn't take long of you using this technique to be fully in the music not relying on the trace track at all! Great video

With my working methods - hardly finish songs. Anyway, thanks for the tip! Seem like a sure way to get going with arrangement and learning from other artist's ideas at the same time.

This is seriously legit advice. Think about how many songs have an AABA structure, or ABCA, or use a ii-V-I progression, or use a VII/I slash chord or whatever-- so much of music is borrowing. I love this idea. (Or -- watching the rest of this, let's be honest Ricky -- using a Rhodes sound over house music. ;-)

Dude, what a great video. I love the idea of following the outline of a song and creating something new using those guidelines. Gives you plenty of room to be creative but also keeps you on track (pun intended)!

Great vid, reminded me of the technique...think I’ll give it a go again,
as I’m at a complete standstill musically..love playing..just get bogged down in loops 🤨
