Don't Forget To Live Your Extra Life. - Zábava
Brad, I love you. But this video is literally proving what a lot of curly haired people always say, that most hairdressers don't understand curly hair styling....
This is why I will not get my hair cut or styled by someone who with straight hair unless I know they know curls. Everything he said is right if you have straight hair but will not work for curly hair
I remember learning this the hard way in my teens. Hairdressers just ruined my hair every time. Whe I go to get my hair coloured and they ask if I want them to blow dry my hair after I'm like "NOPE TY"
If you have curly hair DO NOT BRUSH YOUR HAIR DRY ALWAYS WET!!!
This. I moved to a different state and I’m too scared to even attempt trying someone here because THEY DON’T LISTEN
ikr
No Brad! You are not a curly hair expert. Everything you disagree with is everything that should be done.
Different porosity, different textures. "Curly" girls NEVER, I repeat Never brush your hair dry!.
I literally said the same thing I love brad ! But he doesn’t have curly hair and isn’t very knowledgeable on curly hair! As a very curly hair girl with long crazy curly hair everything that she did was right
Exactly. My hair would look like a lion's mane with all that frizz when I or the hairstylist brush it dry. I prefer to brush it wet.
I wouldn't say never. There are almost always exceptions to most standards. I have to brush my hair before getting it dyed, for example. I do it myself so my stylist doesn't have to waste time slowly brushing it out or risking breakage. But do not dry brush textured hair regularly.
I only have 2a/2b hair but yeah I stopped brushing my dry hair and I wish I did it ages ago. All it does is just create frizz and I just look like a floofy dog
EXACTLY , curly hair is meant to be brushed wet NOT DRY , this doesn’t apply to straight hair and that’s what he knows
I'm in love with this comment section. All us curly haired people standing up for what actually works.
Exactly. He doesn't know what he's talking about here. He's not educated and doesn't know anything about curly hair. Don't speak on something until you're educated on it.
Yesssss!
I’m honestly convinced he’s never actually worked with curly-haired client's before
@Emily agreed. It so sad to see stylists pretend to understand it and do everything wrong with curly hair
@@Emily-by4wk he probably hasn't. It's why you got see a curly hair specialist or get educated in something before you speak on it. Or just be honest say you don't know much about curly hair! Fucking up curly hair is BAD. Curly hair has specific needs, and is structured a little bit differently than regular straight hair.
Thank you for this 16-minute-long reminder as to why I never let someone without naturally curly hair ever touch my naturally curly hair.
Lol
My daughter has curly hair and i don’t, OH my god I had to learn so much! Curly hair is no joke. My hats off to curly girls
lol exactly!!!!
PREACH SIS
THIS.
Curly hair girls HAVE to detangle while wet. Dry detangling is reserved only for for finger detangling only.
Came to the comments for this if we brush out dry hair we’d have a literal frizzball on our head omg brings me back to my childhood
@@tarynriver frizz and breakage
Thank you omg who tf brush curly hair when is dry?! Heck no
He said when it’s 50% dry. So to detangle your hair when it’s damp. When you comb through soaking wet hair, it pulls at the knotted stands of your hair until it snaps off. If your hair is damp you can work at the knots to detangle the strands of hair and get the knots out instead of them snapping. 🤦♀️🤦♀️
@@XslientxXx no. I’ve been natural for 31 years. For max curl formation you need soaking wet hair. Even 50% is too dry for highly textured hair
Always agree with you… except… for the no wet brushing. As a curly girl, this is a must. Way more breakage happens with dry brushing. Come on Brad.
@@acparty905 yes! I have hair like India’s and I have to apply on soaking wet hair and I use my denman brush every time.
I do put some conditioner near my roots too as my skin is so dry, even on my scalp.
@@acparty905 this is the only part i get, he clarified on the second girl that its better to apply products on damp hair but not soaking wet which makes sense for her type of hair
Discovering I could gently comb through my hair in the shower when it has conditioner in it was a game changer! I used to struggled so much brushing through my knotty curly hair when it was dry
My exact thoughts when he said that
Yessss, I was going to say exactly the same thing. Wet hair for brushing and when applying product is a must. It really shows he doesn’t know as much as he thinks when it comes to curly hair.
1. Curly hair can definitely be brushed when wet and for a lot of curl types it’s a must
2. For a lot of curl types, using a lot of water is key for definition. Water is the best source of hydration
3. Gel would not weigh her hair down or make it flat, actually for someone with her looser hair texture CREAM would weigh it down.
that no gel comment was it for me, he has no idea what he's talking about lol
Seriously! I have finer curls and have to use a gel, anything else I would have a weighed down frizzy mess.
Yes I have 3b 3c hair and cream defo weighs it down
@@ieeess4209 That’s cause ours is heavier and more coarse while theirs is thinner and fine.
@@ieeess4209 you probably have low porosity hair then, I'm 2c but have high porosity hair and creams don't weigh it down
Conclusion: brad is always right EXCEPT for when he’s talking about curly hair
Um. I wouldn't say he's ALWAYS right. I am a hairstylist and I've seen flaws even in his regular straight hair videos.
Brad is wrong on a lot of things
@@Hivdghn thank you !!!
Not all curlies are the same. I only detangle on damp hair and it works for me. If I want curl definition, I will spray it section by section and apply products. That comes out more organized for me. Working with sopping wet hair isn't ideal for everyone and dilutes the efficacy of my hair products. He might not be right in all cases of curly hair, but he's definitely not clueless.
@@oliviaaloe9069 yes the hell he is he talkes about curly hair while he always says hess till learning which one is it 😭
Dry brushing is close to impossible when curly hair is dry. Sorry Brad
ikr i get so much breakage if I comb it dry and my hair gets all frizzy.
Even using my wide tooth comb it have trouble detangling dry hair, never mind a brush
Period
@@laytonpro8655 don't use a wide tooth comb. The bristles have no bend so it causes more damage. Brush with a tangle teaser or wet brush
@@FatCatLuna I don’t anymore, I’m just using it as an example an example
Just a note for you brad: curly hair actually SHOULD be detangled while wet. Detangling on dry hair causes unneeded breakage! Any time someone with curly hair detangles, they should DEFINITELY make sure it’s wet
exactly
Also, curly hair does better when you apply product on wet hair. Your curls are more defined when you apply styling products on DRIPPING wet hair
100%!!! Thank you for bringing that up😌
Yes it’s easier for me to detangled mine while its wet, not dry.
I give tips on natural hair on my channel!
I think Brad should collab with a curly hair stylist (Deeper than Hair is great!) cause he could learn why our techniques are the way they are.
Yes! I want him to learn, cos he knows a lot, just not about curly hair, and it would be awesome to see him step up his game.
Deeper than hair is Awesome!! I just watched her Bantu knot video !
I agree! I also love Manes by Mell
PSA
Don’t get curly hair advice from someone who doesn’t have curly hair..brushing curly hair dry is a curly hair sin. Please never do that 😭 that causes the most damage/ breakage. Love you brad but you need more curly hair education.
Man I have done that until this whole debacle. I always had so much breakage :( i didn’t know I wasn’t supposed to do that. I am on my wavy hair journey for a year now. I have been making such a bad mistake lol
Yes it gets really frizzy and your curls look awful! Its a great sin do NOT do it!
Also, brush curly hair dry hurts SO MUCH
Stfu it's completely fine, for most hairs types that is
He probally just forgot her hair was curly man
I love brad, but he definitely needs a little more curly hair education. Definitely detangle curly hair when wet! And styling and soaking wet hair can help those curl clumps stay intact😍
Yes and with plenty of conditioner. The only way to detangle. Sorry Brad curly girls have to disagree with you on this. Gotta give them points back lol
I completely agree! I adore Brad, but I disagreed with a lot of what he said. My daughter is 14 and has CURLY and THICK hair. I had to learn that there is NO brushing it when it's dry. It breaks off and hurts like hell. So she has to brush it with tons of conditioner and then brush it again toweled dry with curl cream and heavy duty leave in conditioner. The only detangling we do when its dry is very gently and patiently with our fingers.
You should always have wet hair when brushing and styling but it shouldn’t NEVER be sopping wet, I always style after I’ve towel dried a bit so that it’s still wet but not sopping
Also a point off for using gel? Lol. It’s shocking that a *hairdresser* is this ignorant on curly hair..hopefully he learns from this.
@@zaidcastillo7716 Nah, styling on sopping wet hair works better in retaining moisture for a lot of curlies. Innersence (the brand she was using in the video) specifically recommends doing so, since their products are so concentrated.
That "brush" is made specifically for detangling curly hair and is great to use on wet hair a lot of curly girls use them.
I don't think Brad knows enough about curly hair to be critiquing people's routines. Honestly if I just went through after my hair was dry and pulled all the extra hair out my hair would be so frizzy.
@@chelseygarrett4221 this is what I was thinking! I have wavy/curly hair. Very much like India in the video.
He was wrong on many of these things.
Agreed! With my wavy hair, combing through with conditioner while my hair is sopping wet is the only way. Of course I’m as gentle as possible and I know any hair loss would be infinitely greater if the combing/brushing was done damp out of the shower. And dry it first?! I shudder to think of that.
@@chelseygarrett4221 yeah I love his videos but when it comes to the curly hair stuff it gets a little hard to watch sometimes.
@@chelseygarrett4221 lol I came straight to the comments cause I knew people would say this 😂
Brad... 2 things. Curlies NEED to brush their hair when it's wet. Dry brushing will cause breakage. ALSO, styling on soaking wet hair is a MUST for a lot of curlies. I have to add in my products with soaking wet hair to get my curls to clump the best.
He thought she would wet plop until it was dry?!? NO. It literally doesn't work that way.
Brad, stick to straight hair. You killed your curly hair cred with this.
I agree from now on I believe nothing he says about curlies
No one's going to mention it looks like she used a shhhhhower cap to plop? That will not dry
Oh shut up he's doing fine
@@divine555 as someone with curly hair, no he is not LMAO
@@thewitchstarot6975 i have curly hair too, everyone's is different and for me some of these things work great
Depending on your curl type, a lot of people have better results putting products on while hair is super soaking wet. It helps the curls clump together and keeps frizz down. Damp styling works for some, but not for everybody! Also because curly hair is more porous, it can absorb product, even when the hair is wet!
This!! My hair needs to be pretty wet when styling in order to get the best results!
Yeah, that's true, damp styling is a big NO for me, it just doesn't give the best results I love to style my hair while it's soaking wet.
and also my hair tends to be super frizzy when I damp style it.
My curls gets crazy frizzy and don’t last nearly as long if I style on damp hair, wet hair is a must for me.
I absolutely HAVE to style my hair when it’s soaking wet!
I agree friz happens when brushing dry
Braaaddd....you need to watch more curly girls. Putting the product in when your hair is soaking wet, then squishing or pulsing it in for a couple of minutes is actually the most effective way to both get product in and maintain moisture for a lot of curlies. I've done it myself and it really does make a difference. Also, these curly girls have spent a lot of time figuring out what works best for them. It's a very different routine than for straight hair. Btw, the reason for not using silicone is because it requires a sulfate to remove, and many curlies only use a sulfate every few weeks. 😘
yes my wavy hair NEVER had the truly "healthy" feeling until I started squishing conditioner and stylers into wet hair (including at the roots, lol)
Agreed this video definitely showed that he doesn’t follow any curly hair stylists or content creators. These are all popular techniques in the curly world
EXACTLY!!
This! If I let my hair get too dry while styling, I can never get the right amount of water back in without completely soaking it again. So either I sacrifice my nice little curl families or start from scratch when it comes to how wet my hair. Wet styling is important. You're not diluting it either. If anything, your making sure more product is dispersed. The water helps dissolve it making it easier to absorb. As you scrunch and brush your product through, you are ensuring that the product/water combo is evenly applied and easier to enter the hair.
Also, there doesn't seem to be any imperical evidence to explain the CGM obsession with sulfates and silicones. Manes by Mell has several videos that go into why both are perfectly fine for most people to use. She does say that some people react negatively to a product. Seeing as how there are almost always reports of someone having a poor reaction to a product, there will always be outliers. These are people who's chemical make-up is so unique that they can't handle certain products that 99% of the population benefit from.
Unfortunately, it was a stylist who wrote the Curly Girl Method book. Only a scientist, one who's research on the subject could be vetted by dozens of his/her peers would need to back up those claims. There was a study done not so long ago that indicates air drying causes more damage than drying with heat. You're leaving the hair shaft expanded and full of water for too long. Even cold temp hair dryers are probably to long. Soaking wet hair with gel takes years to dry. This is what causes damage. Blow drying with heat is better for your hair. Many CGM "no-no's" are flawed or straight up inaccurate.
India had the perfect method for curly hair! Brad doesn't really know how to deal with natural curly hair is what I learned from this video :( It would be really cool if he collabed with a CGM youtuber and both did a natural wavy hair girl routine and compare the results. I think both Brad and curly hair girls would benefit a lot from a video like that.
She doesn’t have curly hair tho
Having Brad, who does not specialize in curly hair, judge curly haired women’s routines and assign an asinine point system to them rubs me the wrong way 🤔
Same. I found myself getting annoyed with Brad. I love his content but he doesn't understand curly hair like someone who lives with it, tried it all and knows what works best. He should be open to learning from curly girls instead of imposing straight hair theory on our routines
Thought I was the only one who felt this way. It just doesn’t sit well with me.
right especially since he's said multiple times in previous videos he wasn't familiar with naturally curly hair enough to judge 🤔 wonder what changed
I think it especially rubs me the wrong way when he was like "im taking a point bc i feel like it" practically saying that whether her method is wrong or right he just felt like taking a point off, then uses the excuse of being nitpicky for why he is taking points off when the point of the video (if you are giving ratings and pointing there routines) is to do it based of the knowledge you have that would be best for the hair not your personal preference.
And yes he definitely he shouldn't be commenting on curly hair methods if he isn't educated on the subject, especially if he is "rating" and giving "advice" onto what to do with there hair.
ME TOO UGH
My two cents: if something works well for your hair, IT IS NOT “WRONG”. Do what works best for YOUR hair. You know your own hair better than anyone else. ☺️
Amen🙏
Yeah its not wrong
Better description would be "not the best"
*Except with curly hair, everyone's curly hair is different
I am a bit surprised. You're usually quite knowledgeable and open to learn when it comes to naturally curly hair.
However in this case, taking that point off for brushing the hair wet, was not contraversial, but plain wrong.
Brushing / detangling curly hair when it is dry is an absolute nightmare and horrible for the hair.
Adding conditioner for some slip and using a detangling brush (as seen in the video) is the only way to go. Once my hair leaves that wet stage, it will never see a brush.
When did he say it should be dry??????? He said it shouldn't be SOAKING wet.
Robyn R yeah he was wrong on a couple things in this one. I definitely have to brush my hair wet with conditioner
I totally agree with you my hair is a frizzy mess if it sees a brush while dry also you get a much better outcome if you do brush while the conditioner is in I totally agree with you as a curly haired girl
@@jazminrodriguez6 he said to dry it to about half way. That would never work for me or the girl in the video. The hair would snag and you would pull apart the curl bundles and create frizz. Which means you would need to wet the hair again.
U can give urself a bald spot depending on porosity n whether or not u have fine hair. Everybody shouldn’t be combing they hair wet like soaked in shower. That’s why they sell water spray bottles to control it. Like brad said ur hair is stretched fragile n even heavy when wet (shower) that’s why a lot of naturals only finger detangle in shower. N that’s why ole girl had 10 years worth of “shedding”
All of us curly girls defending the wet brushing stage is giving me life
I am not about to let my hair air dry to damp to THEN brush it to THEN get it wet again to style it-wash days are long enough and I don’t want that extra damage haha
Love you Brad but we gotta do what we gotta do
Omg brad mondo rating MY HAIR ROUTINE ?!?! should I make a reaction video 👀😅 love your content xoxo
It was a 10 in my book, girl! Love your videos ❤️
DO A COLLAB WITH HIM! He really needs to learn about the curly girl rules
Yes Please!!! Collab and show him our curly ways!
I love the bowl method!
Best toner job I've done on my natural beach wave hair after a tidius bleaching was the dip n squish! I had o patches! You're method was awesome I'd have given you 9 points! 🥰
Lmao watched your reaction so good!!
I hope you take the criticism well and collab with a curl specialist, so they can educate you and even us curly girls
Yeah you can definitely tell he's one of the stylists that has only studied straight hair. A lot of things were wrong in this video but we all can learn
@@whatever3440 Absolutely agree with your comment but just for a laugh when I first read your comment it didn't compute and I thought you meant he only studied hair on straight people 😂 My mind immediately went "Isn't Brad gay???" before I realized
Yes uhm Brad I love you, but you don’t understand this one 😂
Yes! Collab with Manes by Mel!!
Sorry brad, as someone with very curly hair who’s gone to professional stylists that specialize in curly hair- brushing and styling my hair while wet is an ABSOLUTE MUST! My hair looks so much better when I style it wet and is able to fully absorb the products. It stays nice for at least 6 days versus about 3 days when I style dry.
YES! This is exactly it, completely forgot he’s probably not considering you don’t want to wash curly hair frequently so that product and definition has got to last 4-6 days, we curly girls don’t wash our hair every 2 days like straight haired people do. When he took points off for using gel, I’m like “… how else is it supposed to last of you don’t use something like gel” granted I also use foam but that’s for the texture, my hair holds better with gel, but I don’t like the feeling of gel
All of the curly people watching brad say to brush their hair dry, while knowing that dry brushing curly hair ends in half of your hair coming out of your scalp, with the half that remains looking like a tumbleweed: are we a joke to you?
Girl: *does what she's supposed to do*
Brad, with no curly hair experience: no that's wrong
Girl: *has gorgeous hair at the end*
Brad: :0
I love Brad Mondo, but I’m always surprised at how little he knows about curly hair care. From brushing when wet to applying products when hair is sopping wet, Brad has a lot to learn from the women he’s reviewing.
Brad give Vanessa her point back for detangling her hair during her deep conditioner process. Most natural especially tight coily hair detangle best with wet hair full of conditioner. As a type 4 natural I detangle with a tangle teaser with conditioner under running water. It's the quickest, most painless, stress free way to detangle without breaking my hair off. Give her back her point.
I support this, I can't even brush my hair when it is dry, but of I brush gently when it is wet it detangles and if is still wet and maleable so the curls form again without the knots
He deducted her point because of he is ignorant in some aspects about black hair. I love him but I would love him so much more if he took the time to really educate him on 3/4C, etc hair types.
@@joi2dawrld_ he's uneducated on hair that isn't straight in general. He said so many wrong things in this video 😅
He owes here TWO points!!!
boutux
I was "Brad give Vanessa her point back,"
Brad didn't like most of their process but loved their results lol that just shows curly girls know what they're doing and experts still have a lot to learn
She was doing her first wash after braids. You wear them for about 6 weeks, so that's a normal amount of shedding. It's a protective style and the braids trap hairs that naturally fall out.
We need Manes By Mells to react to this because sorry Brad...some points shouldn't have been taken off from both girls 🤣
THIS! They should collab!
I would love to watch that video.
Omg yes she can educate him
Tell me you don’t specialize in curly hair without telling me you don’t specialize in curly hair.
We comb our hair wet because it will cause frizz if we do it dry. And many curly products (like Curlsmith and LUS) recommend using it soaking wet.
Lol I love your videos but this is why I don't go to a stylist unless they are a curly specialist, because the things you're knocking points off for are absolutely accurate methods for styling curly hair and unless you have curly hair or work very often with people who do, or go out and get educated specifically on styling curly hair, there's no way for you to know that. Hair schools rarely educate students on how to properly style curly hair. I can't tell you the number of salons and stylists I've been to that have no idea WTF they're doing when styling curls so they finish cutting it and while it's damp, throw some kind of gel on it and try to put it in place and send me on my way. A MESS. I usually have to go home and re-style my hair after paying gobs of money to get it done. It's beyond frustrating. I recommend checking out Manes by Mell (a stylist, curly specialist, and youtuber).
The gel in the half dry hair after it’s been combed while being cut is the worst 😭
I’m constantly amazed how little professional hairdressers know about curly hair. It’s 2021. But I guess if you don’t live with it yourself you don’t know (like how much hair we lose on wash day because we don’t brush it when dry). My hairdresser was also shocked I use gel but modern gels for curly hair, used correctly, aren’t like those shiny hard ones that men use.
People with straight hair have no business going after curly hair routines.
Curly hair has to be brushed/styled wet or it will frizz and cause a lot of damage. Fact.
It takes a long time for most curly people to find systems that work for us, and they seem weird and taboo to people with straight hair. Don't try to take things that work away from us!
You take that X off my girl India! 😂
Loveeee your comment yes
I don't even brush my hair at all. Wash it once a week with sol de Janeiro and I barely use other products. I'm really loving this stuff that I got in my fab fit fun box
Whole heartedly agree
I just have wavy hair (and a lot of that) but i have the same process. My hairdresser is shocked when i tell her i only wash every two - three weeks and use oils aswell. I hardly ever brush it but if i do my hair is damp and conditioned!
Honestly even straight hair gets frizzy if you brush it dry dry brushing is pretty damaging to the hair unless you have no tangles and you take it super slow
The hair comment is right, hair is most fragile when it’s wet, however not brushing it when it’s wet only really applies to people with thinner, straighter hair. Detangling dry curly hair, especially more coily hair types is so difficult it might as well be a olympic sport. + Way more breakage happens dry, i remember going to a hairdresser to get my hair cut a couple of years back and cringed when she started brushing my hair dry, it somehow ended up more damaged coming out than in, i cut my own hair now. 😂 Basic curly hair knowledge is to do the opposite of what you are used to -please do NOT brush it when it’s dry.
Exactly! My hair is thick 2c/3a and difficult to detangle dry, while my friends is 3c/4a. It's impossible unless you have straight hair that you can brush everyday.
That's why when you go to a stylist you need one who is an EXPERT with curly hair. We can't have a regular stylist because our hair is different. Even with wavy hair the hair pattern is different.
😮 omg... I am so sorry.
I've had stylist who weren't patient when brushing my wavy hair and definitely caused more breakage. With my current stylist, I started dry brushing my hair either before my appointment or while she mixes my color. You can't dye hair without detangling first.
I need Brad to colab with a hair dresser who specializes in curly hair. Most of his advice sounds like it's for straight hair
Even for some straight hair it just doesnt work. My hair gets damaged if I comb it dry or half dry too. Especially half dry it tangles like crazy and theres not one curl on my head
Okay Curlfriends…I appreciate everyone who is giving Brad constructive criticism. 😊
Brad I agree with a collab with various curly chair content creators.
Brad there are so many techniques…plop method, twist outs, fingercoiling, denman brush. Some diffuse, some air dry. It varies if you want definition, elongation, volume etc.
Different curl patterns, different techniques 😉
Gahh Brad!! When you said to dry it 50% and THAN brush I literally laughed out loud! Anyone with curly hair knows that that is NOT the way!! I LOVE that you are including natural hair content, it warms my heart.
Unfortunately there is ALOT that was said wrong. And as someone else mentioned, I would love to see you do another video and say what you learned. Also us curly’s would LOVE to use your products but they all have silicones!! 😫😫😫 please please make silicone free ones and you’ll get a whole new group of people!
Yes yes and yes
I have no curls at all. But I loose more hair if its half dry or dry too. Especially in a half dry state it tangles like crazy
YESS! THIS!
When you brush them while 50% dry, you separate the curls and create frizz
I think he should have both, personally as a wavy/curly I benefit from silicones, but I totally understand that most curlies would prefer no silicones. It works for some but not for everyone.
Ok when Brad talking about silicones, Im quickly realising his lack of knowledge of curly hair. The reason silicones are disliked in the curly hair community is cause the only way to truly wash it out is by using sulfates. Sulfates being very damaging to curly hair as the natural oils take longer to travel down the hair so it drys it out more. After the wet detangling comment too I am becoming more sceptical of this critic
In his defense we really don't learn anything about curly hair in cosmetology school. If I were not a curly girl myself I would not know these things.
This!!!!!!
@@michaelaoren7058 I think everyone understands that, but at the same time he is on internet for years and even told us on the past he didn't knew that much abou curly hair. So I think he could had stopped just for a moment to search a little more about curly hair stuff before making a video rating curly hair routines you know?
@@maxmikaelson yeah I agree.
I agree about the wet detangling. However, as a curly. I love my silicones and use SOME gentler sulfates without fear. Oils and waxes can build up too. You just gotta clarify from time to time. I highly encourage Manes by Mell for more curly info on the topic.
As someone with curly hair I can guarantee I will never be brushing it dry. You wanna talk about frizz and breakage?? That's how you get it. Brushing your hair dry is for people with straighter, more naturally hydrated hair.
For context, I have wavy, type 2 hair. I used to dry brush my hair for YEARS, and I was on the train of "my hair is straight but sooooo frizzy :(" My hair literally poofed up so much I looked like I was electrocuted 99.9999% of the time.
Without doing too much research, I noticed that my hair looked so much better when I didn't dry brush it (usually when I washed it at night and didn't brush it the following morning) so I stopped dry brushing. When I realised that my hair actually had a wave pattern, and was not just "straight frizzy hair", and stopped dry brushing my hair completely, my life became so much easier.
So I can only imagine that girls with curlier hair would have an even worse experience than me when it comes to dry brushing. I have to disagree strongly with this one, Brad. Please consult someone w natural hair/someone who specialises in these areas before making such a video. Or even make it a collab, I'm sure people would be really happy to see you collab w natural hair girls :)
Brad I’m sorry by man but trust me when I say detangling curly hair wet is a MUST. I can’t even get my tangle teaser through my hair dry, the amount of breakage it causes oh Lord
I have curly hair and I just can't agree with the "brush your hair when it's 50% dry comment" lol sorry brad. if you brush it when it's dry/50% dry you are going to fuck up your whole curl pattern. My hair has to be drippy wet when I put styling products through it and I use a wide tooth comb to distribute the product. So yes maybe don't rip through wet hair with just any old brush, use a wide tooth comb or wet brush.
Right? I don't even touch my hair with my hands let alone a brush. I apply products to soaking wet hair micro plop and diffuse and then don't. Touch. It.
Brad as a girl with curly hair I’m telling you brushing your hair while dry isn’t for us sweetie. It doesn’t happen at all and in fact I swear my hair breaks more when I brush it dry.
You are no doubt a talented and entertaining hairstylist and youtuber but there are so many things about how to care for curls you were unaware of. I’d love to see you collab with a professional curl stylist so they can teach you some. It would be an excellent video.
All these critiques about Brad's comments are very valid. As a curly girl, I would just like to add frizz is not always a bad thing. Some of us actually prefer to have a little "frizz" instead of super tight curls outchea lookin like Shirley Temple 😂
omg I’ve never seen someone share this opinion 😭I agree I don’t like when I have ‘perfect’ curls. The frizz looks kind of authentic imo
But I always have frizz and I don't like it. What am I doing wrong, I'm new at this..
Really? I've been called "lazy", "untidy" and all other sorts of character traits assigned to me because of the frizz. Or even for flyaways when you tie it. Even school teachers would tell me I'm lazy cause I clearly don't care for my hair. It's really surprising someone actually likes the frizz (but I'm also happy to hear someone does).
Sorry but Brad is just not educated enough on curly hair care to be doing this. People without curls or waves rarely are. If you’re looking for well researched, good curly hair advice, I recommend visiting a channel run by a curly girl like Manes by Mell. She’s got your back.
Yesss
Ouuu I love Manes by Mell!
Brad, get two curly headed participants with long hair and brush one head while dry and one while wet. See how they react and how much hair comes out in both. 🥴 then tell curly headed people what you prefer for the health of our hair. I’d NEVER brush my hair while dry. Nope.
That would actually be a great video!
He did say that he recomends a 50% dry not a 100%
@@Mp-lm7zh I don't even have curly hair, I'm 2c and brushing it while damp still causes more frizz
The curly community is in full effect in the comment section. Sorry Brad! I love your videos but I agree with the comments- my curls detangle waaayyy better while wet with conditioner.
'Brush up ' on your curly hair knowledge Brad. She did everything perfectly for her hair type and should have scored 10/10😊
The thing I appreciate about Brad is that he loves hair and is always eager to learn so I hope he reads the comments and takes it as a learning opportunity. He probably needs to watch more natural hair content and unlearn some of the things he has learned about curly hair. I would love it if later on he made a part 2 for this video to revisit what he has gotten wrong which is A LOT! Example: Curly styling aka the wash and go is best done in the shower on sopping wet hair.
Yes, it seems like he's at a loss here.
It's very different, to be a curly hair/natural hair specialist than what he's been doing for a living.
I understand and accept the fact that it's okay for him to not get everything right. The truth is, I have curly hair and the amount of knowledge I have about it is pretty small compared to that of a curly hair specialist. He has to take classes, I think, or train under someone who's a curly hair specialist to be able to weigh in on everything correctly.
As a mom of a curly girl, you HAVE to brush it when wet and full of conditioner or you'll NEVER get the knots out. The hair has to be super slippery in order to detangle. If you try it when the hair is dry, you'll end up ripping out the hair.
Please look at how India’s hair looks after her normal routine because it’s the most amazing and fluffy hair ever
We curly girls have to detangle our hair wet. My stylist does it too.
He said not soaking wet.
@@Sugarrr05 I’m a natural hair type 4 girl, it is impossible to detangle my hair unless very wet.
Heck, I'm only a type 3 and I can't dry detangle my hair but I put some water and conditioner in it and the tangles pretty much fall out without much effort.
@@LeeLeeBellePBJLee I feel you.
Nope nope nope...gotta detangle your curly coily hair while wet (or very very damp) and apply products on either soaking wet hair or very damp hair depending on curl type. And gel creams are good for sealing in the moisture. The "swish to condish" is a curly hair technique from Melissa Stites, a curly stylist in Michigan, and it for deeply hydrating the hair. With curly hair, you need to keep the water in...water is hydration. And the plus side is you can use less product while still getting the definition and softness you want. Although, I do agree with using a foam product if you really want lightness and volume. I love a good mousse for that. But mousse doesn't keep a style as long as gel does.
Brad removing points from a curly/wavy for wet brushing like he knows what's up. As a lifelong intense wavy (1" of straighter hair before waves start, ends are ringlets) this is seriously horrible advice to dry brush. Dry brushing curly/wavy hair results in frizz, breakage, and severe damage. Also thinking curly/wavies should be towel-drying before applying product. OMG Brad!
Brad, I love you. But Vanessa was doing the RIGHT thing by brushing her hair while it was wet because if you have curly hair of any type, you know how easy it is for hair to get tangled and end up with knots starting up to the roots of your hair. Combing through curly hair while wet reduces the chances of hair falling out and detangles the hair better. It also helps keep curly patterns intact. Give homegirl her point back. She was doing the right thing for her hair.
Not going to lie…. This is definitely a frustrating video for me. As a wavy I have to do a lot of the things brad dislikes in order to make my waves the most happy and pretty. Brushing while wet is a must, applying products to sopping wet hair is pretty important, and a gel is one of the only things that gives me good hold. The other thing is that I follow India and watched that video. She was trying a curly technique. It wasn’t her actual routine. All that said I think if Brad had more knowledge of curly techniques and the reasoning behind the things wavies and curlies, this video would have been very different!
Yes n the title of that video was literally “TRYING the bowl method”. He knew what he was doing
And gel doesn't weigh hair down except maybe if you put it on dry. The thing is that the water helps dilute the product which allows it to evenly distribute through the hair. Therefore, there's less buildup on the outside of the hair and some of the gel that was absorbed into the water evaporates too. Obviously, not much, but once you add a new chemical to your product, in this case water is the new chemical, you are physically changing the properties of the product. It's no longer the same as if you applied it dry. That's why textured hair often gets more crispy when your hair isn't soaking while you apply your gel. At least, that's been my experience.
Brad is going to regret taking a point for detangling her wet hair! Ahahaha love you Brad!
I'm on board with most of the other commenters- styling soaking wet works way better for my curly hair, and brushing gently while wet leads to WAY less breakage than dry.
Already when I read the title I thought "this isn't going to go well I bet he will criticise the wrong things about curly hair routines". He should definitely look more into how curly hair should be treated!
I wish people that didn’t understand curly hair didn’t speak on the way curly haired people take care of their hair
He’s literally just giving his opinion based on hair theory and science, he’s not a curl specialist and that’s okay. Everyone is open to learning
@@theresehowell3866 but he's giving bad info, a lot of people come to Brad for hair tips- and usually he's on point. Not this time😬✌️
I don’t have curly hair but I 100000000% agree. Wtf is he thinking lmao
He's a hair stylist Hun idgaf what you say because it's unrelated 😀
If I’m honest, most hairdressers don’t know a whole lot about curly hair unless they specialize in it, which is frustrating
I think the only hairdressers who know, are the ones who have curly hair themselves, or who have kids with curly hair etc.
One of the main reasons I trim my own hair.
IF YOU JUST WATCHED THAT VIDEO PLEASE READ THAT:
I do not expect hair stylists to agree with the curly girl method or curly girl styling methods but it just hurts to hear every time. Curly hair CANNOT be treated like straight hair it just isn’t the same thing. It has been proved many times that people who follow the curly girl method NATURALLY do many things right (like using deep conditioners regularly, or using microfiber towels) and that’s because we just really learned how to treat our hair. Sadly most hair stylists don’t know much about curly hair and tend to just treat it like it’s straight (like straightening curls to give an haircut as if I’m not wearing my hair curly). So PLEASE: those rules and techniques that we follow make sense and are practiced for a reason by many curly haired people for many years. So to every curly girl/boy that just watched this video and doesn’t know the curly girl method yet:
-NEVER EVER brush your hair when it’s 50% dry unless you want to destroy your curl pattern and end up with frizz. Only detangle GENTLY with conditioner in your hair.
-if styling your hair soaking wet works for you (which really works for most of us) DO IT. It definitely helps clumping your curls together, as well as keeping definition and have less frizz. If it’s the right product for your hair it’ll absorb it just fine.
-“squish to condish” and “the bowl method” are WELL KNOWN and great methods to style curly hair that really helped many curly haired people. I have just 15 international curly hair groups on Facebook with a combined few thousands people in it that SWEAR by these methods.
So what I’m trying to say is, sadly many stylists don’t know how to deal with curly hair and they prefer to listen to their straight hair based stylist education than on WHAT LITERALLY EVERY CURLY HAIRED PERSON SAYS WORKS FOR THEM. See, they may be stylists and I truly do respect that but I’m the one that lived a whopping 26 years with these curls on my head. I know my hair better than any stylist ever would especially if I invested years of time and research to find out about these methods. Curly hair is unique and special and you have to be open to these ways of styling it. Many of those rules come from women in the natural hair movement that used these methods before there was any hair stylist education. Boys and girls: you can only trust your own hair and other curly haired people when it comes to curly hair. Just. Believe. Me.
That’s by any means no hate towards Brad, just much needed love towards curly haired people. Brad, I hope you hear this.
So true omg
As a someone with wavy hair, I CANNOT brush my hair dry
because it breaks and becomes super frizzy. I also ALWAYS put products in when wet or damp.
Edit: also when you hear a noise of water when scrunching you KNOW that u will have a good hair day
If you don't experience the hardships and joys of curly hair first-hand, don't judge people who do. A hairdresser who is seemingly unaware of the curly girl method, criticizing curly girl hair routines, yikes.
Why doesn’t the “don’t brush wet hair rule” apply to curly hair exactly?
@@EmpressOfIron Because there's no alternative. Dry or damp brushing will result for a lot of us in a frizzy mess, with much more hair damage than if we brush it wet.
@@QQ-cz2in Are you thinking specifically about afro hair? Because I have curly hair and I actually just comb it with my fingers.
@@EmpressOfIron I have type 3 hair and if I brush it wet it screams as it breaks then I look like a burnt broom. If I have it sopping wet with conditioner in it the tangles practically fall away with very little effort, so that is when I detangle, gently. I imagine it would be even more difficult with type 4 hair.
@@EmpressOfIron I specifically refer to brushing to detangle, not finger combing. I have type 3 hair and I can only brush it (with a tangle teezer and denman brush) when it's soaking wet after showering and I have conditioned it + put in leave in conditioner. I think very few people with type 3/4 hair prefer dry brushing over wet brushing to detangle. Finger combing I personally can do on dry hair without causing too much frizz.
I love the curly content Brad, but…. Applying styling products while sopping wet is a widely done thing in the curly community! It helps reduce frizz and promotes clumping.
YESSS!
I used to styled my 2B hair while damp and it always gave me less than satisfactory results, but then I started to style it while wet and the difference is night and day.
It looks so much better now.
lmao brushing dry for me means a big poofy frizzy mess. not to mention how painful it can be to brush curly hair, mine isn’t even as curly as the people in the video and is more 2b/2c but its so hard to brush dry and looks awful. i always brush with a wide comb in the shower when i condition because it helps to detangle and not damage it
IF YOU HAVE SUPER CURLY HAIR, YOU HAVE TO BRUSH IT WET. IF YOU DON't IT GETS FRIZZZY
And it breaks like hell lmao
Even wavy hair benefits from brushing it wet! If I brush my 2C hair dry, it gets so frizzy and loses all definition.
I never knew that....which type of brush do you use to brush it wet ? Do you use hard bristle or soft bristle ?
@@feliciaboston6365 i use a wide tooth comb and a denman brush lol, that’s it
Brad you need to learn about curly hair more. Studies show that people with curly hair actually do less damage when brushing hair wet and vise versa when hair is more straight. Curly girls like myself know this. Another example of how we live in a straight hair world...
Do you mind citing one of those studies? I'm genuinely not trying to be snarky or anything, I just haven't heard of any research that showed the pros of brushing wet curly hair.
@@vanillamarshmallow I mean, if there are actual studies I'd rather read those....
@@fuzzycatbutts I mean…if you don’t wanna pay attention to the girls in the comments that actually have curly hair why not go look for the studies yourself?
@@pinkpandaarmy954 I've never found any such studies, but I would love to read them. That's why I commented...because the first comment in this thread talks about these studies. love you brad, but might need a little more insight on curly hair. It’s hard to brush your hair and place product when it’s dry, that’s why it’s highly recommended to put product on wet or damp hair so that the products can infuse with the hair better.
Brad pleaseeeeee please collab with a curly hair specialist. I love your advice and videos, but some of these techniques are necessary for curly hair!!
The hair she lost while detangling is normal amount of shedding after 6 weeks of having braids in
no it’s not 😂
She has long hair so it looks like a lot but about the amount hummm curly hair life

@@meimeimei982 i’ve seen long haired girls have minimal shedding i think it’s all about your detangling process
It might look like a lot but she has curly hair and you’re right she has long thick hair
I think brad means well, but I don't think curly hair is his expertise.
He should take more effort to learn about how to care for it, and rethink his language (especially as he was describing curly hair as "wild", aiding the idea that natutal hair is unkempt or dirty) before making a video rating people who obviously have far more experience and knowledge about their own hair texture.
I know Brad most likely doesn't mean any harm but before making a video about a hair texture that has been used against people for generations, maybe more research needs to go into the basic curly hair mantience and about the societal and cultural stigmas surrounding natural hair. Some of the language he used and obvious lack of natural hair knowledge, while still trying to rate or 'teach' people with this texture seems unfounded.
I think his team should have arranged a guest with him, such as a curly/natural hair CZcamsr or a stylist who specializes in such textures to assist him in learning about a hair texture that is often ignored by many stylists. Thanks colonism🥴
Yes!
as someone with curly hair, i can ONLY detangle it when it’s wet + with conditioner. there’s wayyy to much mechanical damage when i detangle it while dry.
I love your videos Brad but this is the reason why curly hair people NEED to go to curly hair expert salons. I’ve had MANY hairstylist like you give me the same “tips” you provided and my hair was just one frizz ball. Now by detangling my hair when wet and styling when it’s soaking wet my curls are more defined then ever. Please educate yourself on curly hair
Tell me you don't know how to work with curly hair without telling me you don't know how to work with curly hair.
This comment deserves more likes.
Brad I love you and your content, any criticism isn’t meant with malicious intent. It would be really appreciated tho if you educated yourself more about natural hair as a lot of the points you deducted were for things that are required to maintain curly hair. We’ve seen you’ve been happy to learn and expand your knowledge in the past, us curly haired fans would really appreciate if you took the comments on this video and expanded your knowledge more, maybe even collabing with curly hair influencers like Manes by Mel would go a long way
I would love a Manes by Mell collab! Or if no collab Mell should critique this video/explain to Brad why he isn’t getting it right here.
Yeees, a collab with mell would be an amazing opportunity to shine light to curly hair care to a wider audience
Mel is great 😊👍
I feel weird about Brad rating curly hair routines…this is really specialised knowledge.
NO WAYYYYY HE JUST SAID DONT BRUSH YOU HAIR WHEN ITS WET BUT WE HAVE CURLY HAIR!!!!!!!!!
I have 3C/4A low porosity hair and the ONLY way I can style my curls is when it's soaking wet
@WSSJ I mostly style in the shower. After i wash and condition it, I put my stylers on while in the shower and I just don't touch it and let it sit dry or diffuse. I think I'll just do a video on my channel
As a curly girl I’ve always noticed that brushing my hair while wet and with conditioner causes me to lose less hair . The number one rule I’ve always heard is NEVER BRUSH OR COMB CURLY HAIR DRY.
Lol it's fine to do that
I usually like your vids but sit the curly hair routines out 😭❤️wet brushing is a must. Scrunching in gel holds the curls. Applying product to dry hair feels horrible.
Idk Brad...you’re rating something that you don’t really seem experienced or educated in. Curly girls need to detangle wet and different curl and porosity type require different amounts of water when applying product or the curl will not define. Lastly Innersense products need lots of water, they’re super concentrated.
And I’m a team Mondo so don’t come for me cus I know how y’all like to tussle.
Yeah, I think EVERYONE agrees with u, by me pursuing this comment section....
@@thekaerichtexas yea I started scrolling and saw that too.
I've only made it partway through the first video he's critiquing, and it's insanely obvious that Brad has no experience with curly hair. Curly hair can break when dry-brushed, and water helps the hair absorb moisture and product.
Edit: As this video goes along, it's painfully obvious that Brad is ignorant to curly hair care and has done almost no research on curly care before this video. The bowl method works for a lot of curlies, so the fact that it doesn't compute for him doesn't mean that it's not going to work.
It confuses me that the bowl method would work. I agree Brad made a ton of errors in this video, but the bowl method was really weird to me. Like he mentioned, it's only being reapplied to the lower half of the hair, and honestly, you're just applying more water diluted product into the hair with each pass. Her end result was lovely, but I dunno about that part of it.
@@pandemonicpixie I 100% agree. (And don't get me started on the errors in this video)
I put product in my hair while it's soaking wet, and then I plop with cotton a t shirt (not a shower cap, TF was that) or scrunch dry a bit with a t shirt cos I'm impatient. Sure, I waste some product, but my hair looks better.
Yet I can't understand this bowl thing. *It seems like all this extra work for, what? You could just dilute the product in the first place if you're going to keep dunking?
@@MrTableforfive I could see a shower cap working instead of a microfiber towel plop. I'm not sure it matters too much how the hair is placed, mostly that it has time to absorb product, not get messed up by air or the wrong fabric, and then let down to dry at some point. My biggest issue with plop is that it messes up the direction of the lower half of my hair, and I haven't entirely solved that. Parting is a pain while wet, but seems to have gotten me closer to better results, but then how to dry, parted and appropriately protected. I dunno. Lol.
Also I just wanted to add. It’s not true that the products won’t work as well if you apply it on curly hair. I have 3B hair, if I apply on towel dries hair, I get frizz. If I apply on soaking wet hair, I get perfectly defined curls, every single time. It takes longer to dry, but it’s worth it, cause my hair lasts a full week, and I don’t get any frizz until around day 5/6.
Yes I am the same!! Congrats on finding a hair routine that works so well for you :)
I would love to see you collaborate with a curly stylist to get more information about curly hair. I wet brush as well, dry brushing causes more breakage.
More water for curly hair mean more hydration! Water is a product activator if you’re using the right curly hair product. Brushing your hair in the shower is the only time it’s safe to bush your curly hair and sometimes while styling. All that hair coming out in the first video is very normal. It’s just dead hair tangled into other curls. Manes by Mel is a curly hair educator! Love her videos.
As a curly, this video is a no, no. I don't trust straight-hair hairdressers. You don't know at all what we need. So, my dear, just talk to a curly hairdresser and you'll learn A LOT!!!
Trust, putting product on sopping wet hair is the only way my curly hair doesn't frizz before the product are able to do anything 🥲 I just washed my curly hair so was excited for this but feels like my friends who don't have hair like me tryna tell me how to do my wash day 😔
You style curly hair wet…anyone out there who styles their curly hair dry…please wet that thing and see the difference lol
Nooooope, this is a case of curly knowing curly best!! Dripping wet hair during the styling process is essential.
There’s no way people untangle curls with dry hair, right?? I could never🥴

Brad…. I love you… and I 💯 agree with you on all your other videos, buuuut… when it comes to curly hair, you kinda got it all backwards my gorgeous friend. Please watch a lot more curly girl videos and see that what they were doing is actually everything they need to be doing for curly hair. More water in the hair means more moisture since curly hair lacks moisture. The last thing we need is to dry our hair first before detangling and then adding product. It just doesn’t work that way. I’m sorry babe, but you got this one wrong. You’re still amazing and I will forever love you, but curly hair is a whole other level.
Hahaha everyone’s already said this but we never brush our hair dry as it’s significantly more damage
