The moment when "Peach" is revealed to be Luigi is the best moment of this game XD. The first cutscene and the one where fishgirls were fangirling Mario Bros. were great too.

I now understand why everyone favours the old game over dream team and paper jam, it’s because these old games had charm, and also showed that Luigi can be a hero without Mario as seen in the segments where he is alone
Yeah I really like how SS emphasizes splitting up a lot since it focuses the most on the Bros. dynamic. Both as a mechanic for puzzles and for the segments like you mentioned where Luigi has to rescue Mario or do something pretty notable on his own, Mario too tho his segments are more just to compliment Luigi's. It's good shit.

I'm not sure why the humor largely disappeared after Bowser's Inside Story. The older games, especially the original Superstar Saga, were an absolute riot. Even the 3DS version of Superstar Saga seemed to reduce the humor because the 3D art didn't allow for sudden cuts/frame skips that are usually used for slapstick comedy.
It didn't disappear so much as it just turned awkward. Dreamteam had a few bits that really didn't land, like Seadric's relatives. Too much reliance on verbal stuff and less slapstick as you said. Bowser Jr's Journey was just about when it was getting funny again, but then AlphaDream went under. Here's hoping Brothership will bring back the funny.
