The Case for NASCAR Returning to Bowman Gray Stadium: The 2012 Hall of Fame 150

- The Madhouse of Bowman Gray Stadium has been a long-time staple of the pre-modern era NASCAR schedule. The K&N East Series returned to the quarter-mile in 2011, but the 2012 race was the one that sold me on the idea of NASCAR's top divisions returning to the old bull ring. Thus, here is my case for NASCAR's return to the home of the oldest weekly racing circuit in America: Bowman Gray Stadium.

What if all the cars that didnt qualify for the all star battle it out here for 100,000. A dash for cash.
Thats an amazing idea!!!
Yes
I'd love to see that
Amazing idea
I'd love to see that
I worked rescue at the Madhouse, and it's the best example I've ever seen of "people go to watch a fight and sometimes a race breaks out." It's absolutely packed every weekend and the modified series is high-quality racing. But they do also have demo derbies, chain races, etc. It's so much fun
NASCAR is struggling to fill seats b/c it's the same deal week-in-week-out. I agree, mix it up - run a test - see what happens. Maybe they could reignite the base and get people excited about racing in formats under 1/2 mile.
the Roval was a success
Exactly, people like short, intense, seat grabbing things now. A shorter, tighter track brings that, as exampled by this track. I’d still watch it when my dad has it on, glancing up from my phone, but... I hate to say it cause I used to be a huge NASCAR fan... But I’m not all too interested in continually watching a race on a big track anymore...
I want to see a small, “demolish derby“ disguised as a race to break it up once and a while. Not saying I want a full race series in small, tight tracks, but I want them neatly interspersed throughout the regular schedules.
They build a new track right near me recently (opened in 2016). We had a K&N race that year and that was it. Track is 0.4 miles long and I would love to see some more NASCAR races there, even if it is just K&N. Don't get me wrong, I love Richmond, but only needing to go the next town over for a race on an even shorter track? Sign me up!
Not a chance. Gotta get the "Stock Car" back in NASCAR before anyone will give a shit.
Slightly more comical, put all the top drivers in F1-shifter karts around that track. You could get an entire field around there then. :P
Shoot..... I was wondering how you would make a case for this.... Up until the 10 minute mark of the video... once you broke it down and detailed the blueprints of how to make it happen even with qualifying schedules as well... I literally said out loud "shit..... that's perfect!" good stuff.
I’d drive to see a truck race there, make it a 300 lapped with breaks at 100 and 200 laps so they can pit
300 laps, or until only 1 car remains, whichever comes first. :D
A track like this would be one of the only places I’d accept stage racing.
Trucks wouldn’t fit
Who said that would stop me?
Also, fuck Tyler Davis.
For sure Bowman Gray would be the only Grandstands on the circuit that modern NASCAR could fill up with fans.
we do it regularly. 17,000-ish capacity. it's full for a few weekends out of the summer, usually average 12-15k May through the middle of August.
@@wayneair I know your right, I live in Cooleemee NC, just about 20 mile's from Bowman Gray. MAD HOUSE BABY !!!!!

Yes but I think it was also another reference from when the cup series raced on Soldier Field for the one and only time they raced at an NFL stadium in Chicago in ‘56 won by Fireball Roberts... and NASCAR Convertible Series raced only 3 races in ‘56 and ‘57
bowman gray is nothing like that track¿¿¿ closest track I can compare it to would be seekonk speedway with a pit lane around the track
For anyone that used to play the old EA nascar games, this was the track that the Dodge Raceway Stadium was based off of. I'd love to see a Whelen Modified tour race here.
As far as Bowman Gray, Whelen is already there. I was at the race last weekend.
@@ThomasWBrownIII1978 That's awesome!
There was a TV series that ran in 2010 called Madhouse that was filmed at that track. I watched it every week and loved it, but it was cancelled after the first season.
You can see some of the BGS races on Fanschoice TV.
yup, got killed because NASCAR wasn't getting their cut.
Let us descend into madness together, lovers of drama in SPORT, period. Bring back Bowman Gray. For the fans. For the sport. For the children. For the future.
for the fights
@@hayleymcgough8567 for the fucking madness
A midweek race between the all star race and 600 is awesome idea. If only nascar would listen and give us more short tracks for the fans
Came back to watch this again with the LA Coliseum Clash race now set for 2022.....so pumped !!!! Different, but similar.
Bowman Gray is exciting, but the lack of basic NASCAR essentials makes it impossible. Milwaukee/IRP would be more realistic choices
From what I remember, Milwaukee is still in debt from the last time NASCAR visited, and IRP is too close to IMS
I would be totally open for a truck race here
Or another exhibition race
go back to rockingham or north Wilkesboro FFS
@@joeynascar great get the xfinity series out of the brickyard perfect for commuters wanting to see a shorter track race and the brickyard.
Cup series needs to go to Myrtle beach, Greenville Pickens, The Rock (not Dewayne Johnson), Nashville & Bowman gray. Screw stage racing...lets do beating & banging short track heat racing.
No no no, you're actually correct they need to go to Dwayne Johnson's house and break out a race there.
@Zachary Rugar Myrtle Beach needs a lot of expensive TLC to warrant a national series coming back. The stands are janky looking, the bathrooms are just troughs, the racing surface shreds tires pretty quickly (which can make strategy interesting) and there's no soft walls. Love it when mods and LMSCs come there but it needs a couple mil for anything bigger.
The Rock would need it's stands rebuilt and would need a repave, the rock is very faded sadly, you can't read the names on it anymore
Gotta go to riverhead on long island that would be a good race
am I the only person who wants Nazareth to be rebuilt and replace Pocono?
....
I guess so *cries*
Love it! So well done.
NASCAR needs to return to Rockingham and Wilksboro
Dale Quarterley still races in the K&N Pro Series
The one true GOAT of the East.
He used to race weekly at the track my family's run weekly at since the 50s. He's a hell of a driver, and he's definitely talented on two wheels too. Seeing him win at Lime Rock in a Modified on next to no notice a few years back was great.
From my hometown!
@@travisguin83 I wish we could post pictures in the comments on CZcams. I have a bunch of his Ninja Turtles cars.
You need so much more subscribers. This content is just so high quality. Also, Bowman Gray is one of the best places to be at, I should know. Been there a few times.
Adam Burby Agreed.
@Tylerdavis209s the track would fit twice in Martinsville infield.. theres no room for a single stall
Adam Burby same, grew up in Winston-Salem and it’s just amazing to watch a small 1/4 mile track race
@Tiger35 when the Whelen Modified Tour came (they used to every year), they'd have two parallel rows of pit stalls behind the field house. it was essentially a short double or triple-wide pit road, with stalls on both sides. there was plenty of room for a full field. there's usually 4 full divisions on a Sat night, but for the Tour, 2 stadium divisions would race on Fri night and then 2 stadium divisions and the Tour would race on Sat night.
@@TheWildChildJr actually there is. read my reply to Tiger.

I fully support this idea. I would pay good money to see this live or hell maybe even on TV

i actually am on a local team that races here. it's one of the cars in the pile up @ 10:56. 12-15k in attendance is normal for a regular summer Saturday night. we only get 16 weekends of racing because WSSU football needs the field. BG gets a lot of hate from people that have never been there, who have only seen fight videos on youtube. i agree with you 100%, 3 birds, one stone.
Michael?
I love Bowman Gray. I’ve lived in Thomasville, NC all my life, and I’ve been to BG more than I can count.
Bowman gray is a great Friday/Saturday night. Easiest date night ever
Okay
but hear this out
NASCAR All Star Race
At Bowman Gray
Same exact format from the regular All Star race
but at Bowman Gray
you sir are a genius
Actually, believe it or not, Darrell Waltrip suggested this earlier this year or last. His idea was that the All Star Race rotate between three tracks of different types (short, dirt, road, ect.), that are not on the Cup schedule. I don't recall the other two tracks that he suggested.
@@barryc261 I think it was Eldora (dirt) and Road America (road course) but don't quote me on that.
The "all star" race should be at short tracks. The field is smaller so the track should be smaller. Smaller can be bigger!
Coca Cola 600
At Bowman Gray
You have me sold, I agree with every single point
the first day the L.A. Collosium track was on iracing i tried it with the next get car and afterwards found myself saying “this track is literally the most meaningless farce of a track ive ever ran” then thought back a week later and realized it was all because of bowman gray stadium and this video, its all came true
10:50 The timing is just spot on
A Nascar Race at a Highschool Football Stadium. I love it! This type of stuff gives Nascar character.
I'M SO DOWN FOR THIS!!!! The head cheeses at NASCAR need to see this video!!!! Dude, I SO LOVE your work!!! I practically pinned my ol lady to the couch to watch all your videos last night! At the end she was like: "Yeah, that's kinda cool." I was like OH MY GOD!!! Rotflmfao! She never likes anything I watch! Anyway....I totally dig it, 2 👍 from me! Who ever is in charge at NASCAR this week needs to watch this pronto!!!
Bro you're fooling yourself if you think the head cheeses at NASCAR would go for this. Those guys are completely clueless. The empty stands and low TV ratings are proof.
@@danhendrickson9572 as much as it pains me to admit it, you're right 😒
From someone from Winston, this stadium fills up weekly so this is one of the top racing atmospheres anyway so I think it’s a must.
I literally just saw a post about this track somewhere, and I wanted to learn more about it. Open youtube - your video is the first suggested thing. You sir work as a magician and a wizard. Thank you for your amazing content.

@@S1apShoes *Pick of Spongebob with the Rainbow*
Don't forget the Modified tour
@@S1apShoes your deousal if you think the cup series can have a race when there is no pit road and safter barriers zero chance
@@NickyD Safer barriers? LOL. Nascar tanks would only hit maybe 90 MPH on straights at Bowman Gray. They race modifieds here every week reaching speeds over 100 MPH on straights. The old steel gaurdraids work just fine at this track. Did for the K&N and will be fine for cup racing. As far as the pits goes that is not a problem either. Cars are pitted every week there. The stadium averages 20 to 25 cars in three divisions every week and they have no problem pitting them.
I cant argue with your reasoning for including this track.
1000% agree on your feelings about Daytona and Talladega. I'd love to see a race at Bowman Gray.
Love the history lesson! Thank you for putting this video together! Keep them coming!
Best idea in the world i would watch that 100%
HELL YEAH!!! Ratings would be through the roof. Bring back what NASCAR used to be!
Kevin C yep, all the inbreds would be back to see the crashes and fights
Thank you for sparking up my passion for NASCAR! Any people from Europe enjoying this videos and the stories of this crazy guys in colourful cars?
We could just rotate the All-Star race between tracks like Bowman-Gray, Nashville, IRP, etc.
Bowman Gray is, and always has been, one of the best things ever. I love to joke about running F1 here, but I'd seriously love to see NASCAR come back to this place! I remember that 2012 race fondly! 40 cars on this track? NO! Do two 20-car races and combine the results for points.
I've been to bowman grey to see whelen modifieds and it was epic!
Same here. It literally is a madhouse. lol
Yea grew up going to bowman grey in Winston Salem it’s fun
LOL I’ve got Busch Clash qualifying on the flat screen, and I’m watching this on my phone/AirPods. Seems plausible now. You’re a treasure slap! A visionary.
Dude, listening to you talk about NASCAR is what has renewed my interest in it.
Love these mini-docs and videos man. Keep them up!
"bent sheet metal and hurt feelings" I love this channel.
The "give me this" quip at the end really sums up a lot of what people want in nearly every form of entertainment and i think its great to hear someone say it. Thank you.
Absolutely love Bowman Gray! Living in NC I’ve been to many, many races there, I’ll always love it
I adore your channel sir, and big it up to everyone I come across on the online motorsports community. Excellent observation and analysis. Regards from the UK 🍀
I'm gonna go watch this race now, but holy Shit! That would be complete madness with nearly 40 cars! I don't know how you even get a lap in.
So... I'm in!😈
Cut the field in half. The back half runs a 50 lap B-main to determine their finishing positions; top two transfer into the main event which consists of the top 20 qualifiers in a 250 lap feature, so it would be a 22 car field.
Thanks for replying S1apSh0es! I became a huge fan right when the Worst Race video came out!
Anyway, I was thinking about something like that, but they still constantly wrecked nearly every lap. So that still doesn't solve a whole lot. But screw logic anyways! I would travel down from where I'm at (PA) to see this "race".
@@S1apShoes which would make it basically the all star race which in nascar eyes wont make sense

i used to live in Winston and even got to see a race at Bowman Gray. love that this video got recommended, sharing with all my friends i'd probably drive back down from indiana just to catch that race.
i completely agree. ive been to races there and love it! nascar should race there more often
NASCAR raced at the LA Coliseum. Now they have to race here again.
Y'know, I watched this video when it came out but I'm watching it for probably the third or fourth time coz, damn, you have a knack for entertainingly presenting NASCAR history as well as, if not better than, "official" NASCAR history bits and I'm dying for more.
You my friend are a Genus!!! I love watching your videos! When I started watching NASCAR I loved the speed of the super speedways. Then came the restrictor plates and soon I could no longer get into NASCAR. But a weird thing happened! Races like Bristol which I didn't like at first became must see racing and I gave the short tracks a chance and thought how did I not like this before. It would be awesome to see them run on this track!
Considering we have the L.A., Colosseum, we should have this back
I have been here when:
The sportsman series tried for an hour and a half to run a lap under green and NASCAR in all their infinite wisdom didn't count laps under yellow thus torturing us watching pace laps for an hour and a half
The modifieds... If you know Bowman Gray modifieds, you know.
A cop pull his gun on a stadium stock driver during a caution
A fight broke out in the stands because of the modified feature, again, if you know, you know.
A 400lb lady in the front row of the smoking section with a cigarette in one hand, a baby in the other and possibly another on the way, flipping off a driver as they went by under caution. Modifieds of course.
I doubt most regulars would want or care about a cup or higher series date. Because again, this track lives off of its local modifieds. They are the reason this track retains the name "madhouse", and without them, it's nothing. It's not uncommon to see half the place hit the exits once they're done for the night, and I am willing to bet that most people in the stands couldn't give a rats ass about this race, but they were simply waiting for the modified feature.
The fact you mention a cop pulled a gun on a driver there furthers my beliefs that those officers need retraining or full removal. The cop putting his hands on Bubba in the video rubbed me wrong because the cop is already breaking laws himself that are there for his own safety. Reading this fact just makes me more angry.
Being Born and raised In Winston-Salem North Carolina And always loving a race it makes me happy that someone actually cares about the good old quarter mile that I live so much. Thanks SlapShoes appreciate it.
Ok I'm writing because I really like these videos your putting out and great story telling by the way👍 I am from the 1980's NASCAR days and it was fun to watch up until the early 1990's when I started to loose interest? I happened across videos like this and now I'm interested all over again but more so I can watch from early days up to present because for 20 years I didn't watch one race from lack of interest but now the fans are making watching great again especially by editing out all the boring parts and giving me the best of what it really was about and that's racing. I guess I'm saying thank you and thank you for doing such a great job.
We just need more short tracks period. Maybe even add Eldora to schedule as well.
that was my thought...why not give Eldora some more races. It's by far my favorite truck race every year. (to be honest that because I live in the North east and go to dirt racing whenever I can. Also it's hard to not like the trucks when you have talked extensively with one of the drivers.)
I agree. My idea would be for NASCAR to keep most of its current tracks, shorten the races a bit, and in between stages cut away to a nearby (within 1-2 hours of the Cup track) short track for a local 20-30 lap race. It would be a way to showcase grassroots racing, as well as add variety that I believe touring series lack. Also, since Nascar owns FansChoice, they already have a broadcast solution that can be setup without the same infrastructure that the larger series require.
This aged so, so well
I always love when someone mentions Hickory, ive grown up going there, and I live within 10 minutes, Saturday nights all you can hear is the roar of the motors rumbling through the valley
love seeing all this, this is my hometown and i was completely unaware of the history it held in racing.
Would love to see a bigger series return there! Been going every Saturday for 24 years
