- NAMM20 was special. I don't know, but the quality of gear releases was just REALLY HIGH this year. So many rad reverbs, modulation and delay pedals. Here's some of my favorite pedals, as well as a quick look at my favorite guitars and synths from this year's NAMM. Remember to drop your favorite pieces of gear from NAMM20 in the comments below.

So good having you at the booth! Glad you loved the plugin!
Right back at ya, gang! It was so good to see you all. And you made something truly special in that plugin. Holy mother of tone it sounds AMAZING!
Awesome recap!! Thanks for putting this together! That Rooms reverb and the Visitor modulator seem right up my alley!
Thanks, man! Yeah, those two are special 😊
I love the direction all these pedal companies are going. So much inspiration behind all of the demos, I want every single pedal!
Yeah, man! So much good stuff happening right now in the gear world 😊
Love this. All of it! Your enthusiasm is inspirational. I can't go to NAMM so really appreciate your insights into new gear and great interviews with the tech and music creators. For me, the Rooms is an ambient guitarist's dream come true. I'm totally with you about the Wavestate! 😄
Thank you so much, man! Really happy you enjoy the vids and find them informative and inspiring. ROOMS is sooooo good 👌
Stephan you have such a nice freaking awesome job and you do it very well, thank you
Well alright! Thank you so freaking much 😊🙏🙌
Thank you for these very interesting impressions from NAMM.
I am most curios about Death By Audio's Rooms.
My pleasure. Happy you enjoyed the video and ROOMS 😊
That Afterneath does really sound cool, glad you're feeling better!
Cheers, man! Yeah, Afterneath V3 is super rad 😊
Thanks for doing this video! Greer Royal Velvet, Red Panda Context, and SolidGoldFX Oblivion are at the top of my list!
Sweet selection, man! I’m happy you enjoyed the video 😊👌
Here's my favorite gear from NAMM20. Including pedals, guitars and synths, but mainly pedals. Please let me know in the comments below what your favorite gear releases of NAMM20 were.... Oh, and please consider leaving a like, comment or even sharing the video with your friends. Would mean the world to me. Thanks for being awesome ❤
So in a few months I can buy cheap second hand Afterneath V1 or V2 and Red Panda Context V1 : )
jonas eggen - Probably. The Afterneath V3 ticks in at a pretty favorable price point though. $199 brand spanking new. And it has trails now, which the old ones don’t. But if that’s not important to you, then there’s probably a V2 for you somewhere out there.
@@thepedalzone I just mean that the first Afterneath sounds so great and was one of the most impressive reverb when it came, (something your demo at that time convinced me of) so how I think is that it hasn't become worse just because they made improved versions since then. But if I know myself right I will probably buy the Eurorack one at some point.
I was watching another vid...*cough* *thatpedalshow* *cough* and when your notification banner popped, well... here I am. 😄 We love ya Stef 🤗🥰
Awwwww, man! You're making me blush here. Thank you so much ❤
Stef! So appreciate what you do. Just downloaded the neunaber wet reverb plug in AND holy shit it’s like getting 10 new post rock boutique pedals! Thx for the tip.
Awwww, man! Thank you for the kind words 🙏 And I’m happy to hear you downloaded the WET plugin. It’s just so insanely good. Completely blew me away 🙌
Damn, I thought I was done buying reverb pedals but that DBA Rooms is amazing!
Dude, thanks for the shout out! Much appreciated. ♥️
My pleasure, man! You and your guitars deserve all the attention. Hope more people will get familiar with your awesome instruments this year ❤ And definitely get a ROOMS, or at least try it when you can. It's so insanely good!
great stuff!!! home run from death by audio as usual!
Cheers! Yeah, DBA did really well 👍
“2020 is the year of reverb”
This makes me happy. I already added the Life Pedal to my rig, time to check out the Rooms.
Definitely time to check out ROOMS 😊🤘
Thanks for the review, man. Some beautiful pedals here. I prolly won't buy any because, at the moment, I don't need one. But it's nice to hear them. Thanks man.
Cheers, man! Happy you enjoyed the sights and the sounds 😊
Man that "Visitor" made me look at modulation completely differently. Might just have to get one 😂
It’s pretty special. Never heard anything like it before 😊👌
welcome back stefan, we missed you :)
Awwwwww! Thanks. It’s good to be back ❤️
nice review on rooms :)
Cheers, man! It was so rad to try. Can’t wait for it to be released soon 😊
Think back on 2020 pedals I've enjoyed the most this year. Definitely, as you mentioned, the Afterneath v3. I loved the v2 and really really love having the exp. control over the drag.
The Context v2 is also amazing. I love he cathedral, Reverse, Plate, and Grain settings. They all are so beautiful, musical, and accessible/handy--especially with the low/hi boost/cut, and the ducking/expander feature.
However, by far, my favourite pedal this year has been The Blue Violet Caprid by Wren and Cuff. That has been the most pleasing experience I've had guitar wise. W&C = amazing.
You finished with the best!!! I am anxiously awaiting the release of the Wavestate 😬😬😬😬
It’s SO COOL!
The aristides tele’s were sick! I also loved the rooms by DBA and the life pedal v2!
Yeah, Aristides make insane guitars. Their T-style looked awesome 🤘
Hope you’re feeling better after that bout with NAMMTHRAX! The Afterneath v3 is at the top of my GAS list for 2020, and man! Those Widesky guitars are beautiful. Time to start saving, big time!
I'm feeling way better, thank you 😊 And yeah, Wide Sky Guitars are stunning. I really want one of his Reckoners so bad 👌
Be well soon dude! 👍😊
Thanks, Mike! Hope you managed to escape the NAMMthrax, and that you got home safe and sound 😊❤️
@@thepedalzone Yes brother to both. It was overwhelming but I loved it. I will know what to do next time! :-)
Have a great weekend my friend and I hope to see you soon ;-)
Man, I really hoped that you’re telling something about the DBA pedal, and here it is! I’m looking forward your full review about it. I already have an EQD Ghost Echo and a Walrus Fathom to make that awesome, almost uncontrollable noisy reverb sound (as Ollie does in the A Place To Bury Strangers), but when they’ve announced the Rooms... I just want a third reverb I think! 😀 Awesome video as always Stefan! ❤️ Cheers from Hungary!
ROOMS is amazing, man! A huge highlight for me at this year’s NAMM Show. One of the most fun and unique reverbs I’ve ever played. Hope I get the chance to demo it 😊 I’m happy you’re excited about it. There’s a lot to be excited about 🙌
funny...ollie had a namm pass with chris written on it!?!
headphones are on....especially when listening to Stefan.. that DBA Rooms is delectable
Cheers, bud! ROOMS is special, that’s for sure 👌
It’s a pedal Morten could probably get behind. The Orange Bass Butler is the best distorted bass sound I’ve ever heard.
Context v2 is a workhorse. That eq section is perfect.
Thanks for this list and your dedication to the craft.
Cheers, man! Bass Butler sounds cool in all the demos I've heard. And yeah, Context V2 is incredible. It does it all. Normal to otherworldly. I love it!
Wild that OBNE captured the moment you tried Visitor on camera and actually made that the pedal graphic.
So wild!
Glad I didn't catch that, I was worried the entire time, touching all those pedals n' walking through a freakin' persistent smoggy haze of coughing NAMMonites. Glad you're well now! Was hoping I'd run into you out there. Maybe next year.
Good thing you didn't run into me, otherwise I would have NAMMthraxed you 😂Let's hope we get a second chance next year 😊
Thanks for the update Stefan. Still happy to hang on to my Big Sky for reverb but the Synesthesia is most interesting. Lack of stereo in is an issue for me though, which means I am drifting towards getting a Zoia (largely thanks to your demo which made me look at its seriously).
No mention of the Life Pedal v2 in any of the NAMM coverage. I guess because they are pretty much sold out (and I have one, thanks to you video on it). Keep up the good work 👍
Hope you find the modulation device that's right for you 👍 Yeah, no real need to talk about Life Pedal V2. It's basically already sold out worldwide, and it's not coming back.
@@thepedalzone The Life Pedal is stunning. Any chance of a Synesthesia demo soon? I keep flip-flopping between that and a Zoia, you showing what the Synesthesia can do would be a great help.
The Red Panda Context V2 sounds real good as does your playing.
Thanks, man! Yeah, the Context is incredible 🙌
This is great review man congrats so pleased you’ve moved on to pedals since Terminator Salvation btw 😉 (I thought u killed it despite Bale screwing up the edit)
Thanks! Thought I would branch out a bit
Gonna need that Visitor demo asap.
Happy to hear you’re excited about that pedal. It’s super cool 😊
I need the ROOMS so much
It’s SO GOOD!
context is one of those benchmark pedals for me. loved the original. v2 looks crazy good.
The V2 is just perfect! Really an incredible reverb 🙌
Glad you had a good NAMM, my man! The Visitor and Nu-33 really caught my ear!
Thanks, bud! Wish you had been there. Maybe next year? And yeah, those two are special 😊
Holy shit that Rooms! I plugged in and tried it, but with the entire team also tweaking a Fuzz War at the same time, so I didn't know which pedal did what sound. At least three of those modes are wildly special.
ROOMS is so special. DBA did so well here ❤️ Hope you get the chance to try it out in a less chaotic environment soon 😊
man. there's a few there i am in love with
Sweeeet! Which ones?
ThePedalZone obne, red panda, dba, eqd.
The Death by Audio reverb really seems impressive, but the Neunaber's plugin with up to 120 seconds of decay really made my jaw drop, amazing! As for CBA and Meris collaboration, a bit wanting, especially considering the steep pricetag on this box. Was expecting a good deal more from such cutting-edge companies.
Happy you enjoyed ROOMS and the WET plugin. They sound incredible. I personally think the Meris CBA collab is really cool. In my mind it's just more aimed at studio use than live use. It's honestly one of the best reverb sounds I've ever heard. Just a beautiful studio reverb.
@@thepedalzone Don't get me wrong, Stefan - I'm a bit of a CBA freak - have a good deal of Joel's pedals - and am big time on Meris - grabbed an Ottobit jr as soon as it was released. But the demos of their CXM release didn't really catch my attention, especially considering the legendary status of the Lexicon. But, again, this is something you really have to lay your hands on and try for yourself; CZcams demos obviously won't do justice to the subtleties and nuances of such a pedal.
SolidGoldFX has really nailed it lately
Totally! They’re on a roll 👌
Man, guess I am getting the Afterneath v3 and the DBA Rooms. They sound amazing.
The Meris/CBA collab left a lot to be desired for the price tag in my opinion. Not a jab at the companies since they're two of the best companies doing pedals right now, and I have a huge soft spot for Meris
Happy you're stoked about those two. They are super rad!
Watching this in December 2020, that cough joke is extra hilarious.
🤷♂️
@@thepedalzone It's not your fault. Right? Also, thanks for inspiring me to get the Visitor.
Im all about the neunaber plug in , rooms , and context 2
Totally get that. They are super sweet!
I like ... Oblivion & Context. 🤟🏼
Happy you dig ‘em! I think they are AWESOME
Isn't it funny how in February Coughing in a comedy bit was acceptable, but one or 2 months later and it would be tasteless, odd how the world goes to shit so quickly... At least I get to still hear your Awesome ambient tones, Stefan!
here for rooms.
Awesome! We should all be here for ROOMS
Rad bro
Cheers, man!
This patch of Sky
Bummed I never got to see them live. Great band 👍
Not sure how I missed hearing about the Meris/Bliss verb. Looks awesome! Agreed on the WET plugin, too.
That's what happens when you don't have enough time at NAMM. There's a lot of ground to cover 😊Your Immerse vs WET plugin demo was great, buddy. That plugin is crazy good!
@@thepedalzone Ha - guilty. Next year I will have more than 45 minutes. Hopefully. And thanks, bud! You rule. Can't wait for your 1978 verb vid.
Oh man Afterneath V3 sounds great, i hope they improved the mix-knob tho, Afterneath V2 makes me volume drops at some settings.
Rooms is going to be the pedal of 2020.
I’m so hyped about it!!
Great video! Also I really need to know where you got that hat
Thanks! I got the cap from BOSS. Try and write them a message and hear if they have any for sale 👍
ThePedalZone thank you!
I was on a quest to find the best octave fuzz... And I found five:
-EQD Life Pedal (not a fuzz, but wildly versatile)
-Walrus Audio Kangra (not technically an octave fuzz, but definitely produced octave sounds, plus the filter sounds killer!)
-Danelectro 3699 fUZZ (it's the old fOXX Tone Machine, but in a small enclosure w/top mounted jacks, and you can turn on/off the octave, which is great because the standalone fuzz tone is also very good)
-Joe Gore Screech (small builder, simple pedal, voiced perfectly... Joe's a cool dude and I instantly dug this one)
-Gamechanger Plasma Third Man Edition (killer octave up gated tones, and suboctave, and both! Slightly larger footprint makes a difference for a super lightweight touring rig, but the tone is undeniably awesome).
Cool, man! You should check out the SolidGoldFX 76 or 76 Plus. The 76 is my favorite octave fuzz ever 👍🤘
@@thepedalzone Ooh good point. I never made it to their booth! Next year... But that does seem to hit the sweet spots of both Kangra filter stuff plus octave up stuff. I've watched your demo on that pedal a couple times now. :-)
AAAAAAaaaaarrrrrrrr I neeed that Allllllllllll ;) :) AAMAZING Good Pedal Fun
Happy to hear you're excited 😊
Gong mode 🤟🏼😍
GONG! 🤘
We got multiple hangs, so despite my own Nammthrax, I agree: best NAMM ever. Love you bro, hope to see you in Nashville in July and per usual, I love this video (and I agree w/your choices...couple others I came across, but these would definitely be on my list as well).
-Aaron
It was so good to meet you and hang with you, man. You're a kind dude, and a great guitarist. Hope you're over your NAMMthrax. It took me almost 3 weeks to get over mine. What other pedals would you have put on your list? 😊
ThePedalZone aww thanks man, you’re equally as kind and even better of a guitar player than I am, lol. As for other pedals, the new Zander Circuitry Junipero is/was sick AF if you like modulation (setting 7 w/the pitch vibrato & Trem is amazing). I also really liked the new delay VS Audio showed off, it had a crazy/cool function that allowed it to control the adjacent chorus pedal of theirs, completely MIDI-less. But if I’m talking delay, the ECCOS is really the clear winner; I played it at summer NAMM so I was already in love with it. Off your list The Visitor was my winner, Brady just does it right. As for the thrax, took 19 days to clear out. Glad you’re feeling better my friend.
Hmmm - did you ever find out if this was CVD? It was definitely lurking around at that point. Glad you are ok!
Hey Stefan!
Did you prefer the Room or the Context in the end?
Is the Visitor analog?
Thanks and rest well 🤧
I don’t have a preference. They are two extremely different reverbs, and they are both utterly amazing. Visitors is digital. And thanks! It’s going in the right direction 😊
That SolidGoldFX NU-33 Chorus/Vibrato is killer! Any idea when it'll be available?
Yeah, it was rad, man. I don't know about the release date. Covid has put a hold on a lot of things. Best to just ask SolidGoldFX themselves 😊
I recognize that song you’re looping in the background of this video. Who is that?
the best damn namm ever
I'm a Guitarist. I'm in love with the Korg Wavestate and I am selling off some stuff to get one. I must have it ! It is amazing. Peace=
Happy to hear you’re excited about it as well 😊
Hahaha "for Helved" xD good job dude. Just made a new list of gear for 2020. And u made it longer. Sigh.. thanks. I Guess.. xD god bedring du.
Jamen det er jo umulig at arbejde under de forhold 😂😂😂 I have a hunch that 2020 is gonna be a crazy gear year. One of the most intense yet. This NAMM Show was just really good. So many strong releases, and the brands usually save the really good stuff for later, so I'm truly excited 🙌
Stephan feel better!
Has anyone found anything on the NU-33? I don't see it on there site
Cheers, man! Both the Oblivion and NU-33 were prototypes. They aren’t ready for release yet. But probably soon. That’s why you don’t see them on their site. But write SolidGoldFX. They will happily answer any questions you may have about those pedals 👍
@@thepedalzone makes sense, thank you 🙏
Please tell me you can turn the noise off on the nu-33. Even as seasick as it can get, the noise generator really breaks the dreamy quality you normally conjure for me.
Of course you can
Gong mode!
GONG!
Idk that much about reverb but look up old blood noise reverb pedals so expensive but sound is insane
Yeah, OBNE makes great reverbs. I have demos of their Dark Star, Rêver and Minim here on my channel, and I've used their Procession reverb in a bunch of my more tutorial based content. Stellar pedals. Price and affordability is always subjective. They are not the cheapest option on the market, but they are definitely not the most expensive either. They find themselves somewhere nicely in the middle. Something that's attainable for most people, if they really want one 😊Happy to hear you're a fan of them as well. I love everything OBNE makes.
Listen, this video would have gotten a like anyway, because your videos are awesome. But you get an extra like for the shirt.
Well alright!! Awesome! Thank you 🙌
Can the static noise of the NU-33 be sustained longer? Or does it simply start and stop as you play?
As described in the info box in the video, the noise can be set to always on or only on when you’re playing
@@thepedalzone Ooops! I missed that, thanks!
How come you don't do any Walrus Audio pedals?
I don't own any at the moment
Did you see the Light Pedal from Gamechanger??
Yes I did. It was cool. Just not a must for me 👍
Is there some chinese dsp chip that are in all of these pedals? Very samey sounding to me. Not trying to neg out or anything, I'm just sayin.
A lot of the pedals today use the FV-1 IC by Spin Semiconductor. It's actually a chip developed in the US by Keith Barr, the former founder of MXR. For the really high-end digital stuff, a lot of brands are using either SHARC or Blackfin made by Analog Devices, which is another US based company.
An all DbyA board, Stefan?
You lucky, happy, half deaf dog,-
the term "intuitive" is often abused, but they (he) keep it so.Solid Gold is another one,- recently got the Apollo 2, and although it's a little complicated for a idiot like me, those more unusual options provide the sounds beyond those we otherwise might have little use for .
If someone had the Sound wave Breakdown and Interstellar Deluxe on their board, I'd have to stop and listen .But then, even Joe Perry had some guy build him a great chain, recently. There are some smart ears building circuits, these days~actually difficult to stay tuned in.
The Apollo 2 is awesome! A truly special phaser :)
Could you pleeeeassee share your opinion on the Dark World vs. Rooms. For us mere mortals who can only afford one 😂 which would you grab and why?
nick thanks for the suggestion brotha 🙏🏼
They are both awesome, and extremely different. So it all comes down to what sounds and features you would need. I personally feel that the Dark World shines when it comes to the more textural stuff, like the Mod and Shim features. On top of that Dark World is MIDI enabled and has the whole bounce/ramp setup, which really lets you get creative and do out-of-the-box things. Rooms on the other hand delivers some of the most authentic spaces and... well, rooms, I've ever heard. It sounds really natural and organic, but can of course also get wild and obscure, depending on what mode you choose. I personally really like its Room, Wave, Peak and Gong mode. Room just sounds hauntingly organic, Wave has a beautiful almost vinyl-esue vibrato on the trails which is a blast to manipulate on the fly via expression, Peak sports a bold filter, which is great for atmospheric sweeps via expression or for perfectly EQing the verb to sit in a mix, and finally Gong mode just adds unreal bit-reduced textures to a massive wash of reverb. On top of that, Rooms is stereo. Rooms is also a very big pedal, so it also depends on if you're looking for a compact solution or if you have plenty of space on your board. So as said, it all depends on what you want and need. They are both awesome
ThePedalZone Dang. Wasn’t expecting this...man, I really appreciate your input. This is great information and helps a lot. Thank you so much for this 🙏🏼
Hi.. often watch your vids.
Just wanted to say though that it was difficult to catch the names of the 3 guitar makers you recommended.. and hoped you had listed them in print below.. (screen captions on the vid would have helped)..
Just that old thing of isolated spoken words difficult to identify by the brain due to lack of context.. and which always applies when names are spoken, given they are not object signifiers. Alongside spoken names, the printed spelling is helpful.
Cheers! And for a great site.
Well, I’ll just happily write them here for ya. That’s what comments are for 😊 Dunable Guitars, Baranik Guitars and Wide Sky Guitars. Enjoy!
@@thepedalzone
Hey thanks... Much appreciated! It was Baranik I was having particular difficulty with.. I went searching Boranic..
Dunable was at least shown on a tag hanging off the guitar.. and harder to go wrong with Wide Sky.
I loved the nu 33 and I already have the mood and metore which can both make noise or sound lo fi hmmmmm
But neither Mood or Météore is a chorus/vibrato, so there’s that 😉
ThePedalZone great minds think alike
You absolutely killed it with ROOMS, gang ❤️❤️❤️
covid was at Namm ... so you had it
Cool! Always wanted to be a first mover
Have u heard new Folian?
I have no idea what it is, so no.
m.czcams.com/video/ant5cyXqCQU/video.html
The noise is way way too harsh and digital sounding on the nu-33
You can adjust the amount of noise to your liking. I have it set pretty high in the examples. That’s why it’s harsh
@@thepedalzone no no, that's just level adjustment. The character of the noise is all wrong if vinyl is what they're going for. It sounds more like a broken transistor radio.
I don’t know what they’re going for. But hey, if you have ideas for improvements then write them on social media. The pedal is still just a prototype. I’m sure they’re willing to listen to your ideas.
i can't tell if that static noise is supposed to be there or something is wrong, either way its non-musical and unattractive as hell.
this homie got covid from namm i stg
just ordered rooms thanks to you....I have to stop watching ...
I'm "sorry". Enjoy your ROOMS. It's killer 😊

Of course it’s not. I hate Corona. I’m an IPA man 🍻

I'm so tired of all this commodified, overpriced, hyped "new" gear, every year. It's become too much. I worry that it's become like guys who fetishize cars. Guitarists fetishizing pedals and other gear and not getting into *music* - and that's NOT to say that gear isn't musical. Of course, it is. How could it not be?
But it does seem to me like commodity fetishism par excellence. Yet another reverb that has a *few* new tricks, a bunch of overdrives that all pretty much sound the same, overpriced DSP that a decent tech-head could make with ARDUINO or something. Means of production. DIY stompboxes started out with musicians claiming some of the means of production for themselves, (they were modding existing mass-produced pedals or revamping existing circuits, hence "some of the means of production). it was a kind of co-op attitude.
Then capitalism got involved, bigtime. That was inevitable, it's the only game in town right now.
But think of what we *could* do if we *owned* the means of production! Imagine the freedom in that. Think of all the creative and tech-savvy people creating wonderful devices *and* music, and all that surplus creativity and product accruing to us, and, down the line, society at large.
Imagine - and vote Bernie, if you're a USA-person.
Down with Peanut Butter-Judge, down with the DNC, up the freedom of the working classes and all the suppressed talent and aptitude that's out there.
