    Some units use a small amount of power to trickle through the run wining in the compressor for a crankcase heater. When in doubt always change it out with the same. Carrier was big on this year's ago. The wiring diagram will tell all. Not every case is like that though. Just a friendly FYI. Great video!

      This is true. If you want to carry 2 poles only, you could just use a jumper. Good point about the CCH.

      ***** that's the thing...There may NOT be an actual crankcase heater. The manufacturer designed a small amount of current to pass through the run wiring of the compressor to provide just enough heat to prevent refrigerant migration to the crankcase when it is colder than the rest of the system. Most manufacturers now use a dedicated heater though...In which you can run it 100% if needed.

      ***** you are welcome. I have ran across a few and they have always been a carrier or carrier knock off product. You can usually tell by tracing the wiring diagram....If it's still on the unit. :/ talyn875 needs to do a video on it!

    • @HVACShopTalk
      @HVACShopTalk Před 10 lety

      I bet they use crankcase heaters more now because that must not produce hardly any heat at all.

      Justin Mikola talyn875 AFAIK The only units that use trickle Heat is much older units? Mostly Trane and GE. They have a completed circuit from l1 to l2 thru one run capacitor in off cycle. There is a misnomer that a single pole contactor does create some trickle current but it can't as there is no completed circuit. I have seen carrier put their heater across the single contacts so heater will only be on during off cycle.

    As an HVAC apprentice I have a question about how the line wires are connected to L-1 and L-2 on the contactor (about 3min 20sec in the video). Is this method recommended or do you prefer the way the line wires are held in place on the new contactor? Thank you for taking the time to post your videos. I think alot of us new guys learn a bunch from the journeymen out there. Thanks again and God Bless....

    John if you were there a couple of weeks ago why didn't you notice the burned out contactor then, it could have been replaced at that time and saved your customer the cost of another service call just wondering, Our A.C. service tech will change out the contactor if it's been a while regardless if it looks bad or not. They are rather inexpensive and easy to replace. Just wondering again???

    So if I was going from a single pole with shunt to a double pole on a Amana/Goodman ASX14 unit can I wire the double pole exactly like the original? I assume I don't have a trickle charge for the compressor or dedicated heater?

  • @TheWilferch

    At 0:53 - 0:56....are all those wires coming thru a panel hole with NO grommet?...and at 0:58....is that start capacitor mounted upside down, such that when the unit begins to fail....it'll fail even FASTER as the fluid leaks out faster? Some weird stuff going on here.

    Nice job, I like the way you took the time to tie up those wires. I know all Techs would not do that. My contactor is going on 13 years its original Rudd straight cool only 2 1/2 ton. What do you think change it ? I am getting 208 on both sides. It is slightly pitted. But over all don't look that bad. Again great video I have been watching you er videos for a long time. there is no top or bottom the live wires go in wire side the wires that need power go to the other side the left and right of your contactors are your 24 volts
