its not the look or feel morons..... its the rent. the rent is what drove retailers out of there.
i just got done making that same point about parts of hollywood blvd in LA , its the ridiculously high rents and high cost of doing business that causes stores to close and not the occasional homeless persons that may be somewhere around the area .
I grew up in Sunset Place. Used to visit the movie theater with my wife and play at the local LAN spot with my friends. Sadly that's all over now.
The Virgin megastore was amazing there, back in 2003 😍😍
Greed killed it.
Anyone remember the incredible cyber cafe that used to be here? And remember the amazing pretzels next to the Barnes & Noble on the second floor?
I agree with ChrisWillisTV, the biggest turn-off was their charging for parking. Period.
It failed because it's the end of malls and the beginning of online shopping. Look around America and see how many malls are abandoned.
This is crazy they don't need to demolish. Re-imagine it, add lots of residential units above it - remove most of the offices, allow just admin and offices that are created by demand of many residential units (doctors office, dentist office, and the like (?) it's a charming place and the interior courtyard is very nice. Bring people in by creating living spaces - build up!! all retail and residential on the sidewalk level. parking for residents and visitors, add destination places like event restaurants. make a little stage and open-air event space in the interior. I really think there is no need to demolish it. What a waste of construction materials and what an evident lack of imagination in the area. SMH..........
🤦🏽♂️ 4real SouthMiami residents are trying so hard 2 get rid of the things that make Miami different + just white wash everything 2 the same basic boring model of shopping centers. SUNSET PLACE definitely needs an upgrade, but it shouldn't be torn down entirely. It has much potential but South Miami residents seem to lack any form of creativity to bring something good outta this iconic mall's potential renaissance.
I remember when they built Sunset Place in 1999! I was a senior in high school and me and friends would skip school and hang out there! 😂
In 2010, I remember going to the movies, VS with my gf at the time, the Barns n Nobles, get some ice cream, going to a restaurant upstairs etc. The design of the building had nothing to do with it closing, The shops were not that bad, the congestion is bad nomatter if it was The falls, Dadeland, Dolphin, The Americas, or Sawgrass Mills even. It's been a nice place, but it is also a smaller mall, with charged parking (which i didn't care because i used to take the train), that since 2016 hasnt been the same, but specially got wrecked after covid. I am absolutely certain that these people were charging an arm and a leg for these shops just because of the area. I have no doubt that for most people who do not live near a metro rail station, it is way too expensive to park, knowing it would be free a few blocks away in dadeland. Make no mistake, the mall is dying not for any of the reasons they say in here. It is dying because of greed.
I was there today, the Problem is US-1 , its an absolute nightmare to travel on, with all the technology you would think Florida could figure out how to cycle intersection lights so you don’t have to constantly stop and go!! I get car 🤢
I don’t have a problem with them to charge $5 for parking. Higher than that no way. It’s what $15-20 now? Last time I went was almost 10 years ago
I visited this place once when I stayed at a nearby hotel and I was amazed by the beauty of this place. The only memories I have is the pictures I took one early morning while the stores were closed.
Same thing happened to CITYPLACE W.P.B.
I used to go here all the time in the early 2000s.
I think there's a direct correlation between these mall developers and selling the parking garages to private entities who charge money for parking. Everyone I can think of eventually tanks and I've lived all over this mall filled country.
I remember not that long go when I was in HS, keep in mind I’m just 22. This used to place to chill and go watch a movie while your friends, I would definitely say like many malls online shopping and streaming have taken its toll
Great mall terrible parking
Employees had to pay for parking. I worked there the day it opened at Gameworks. Knock it down
The difference between sunset and the other malls you mentioned is sunset charges for parking why the hell should anyone pay a fee to do business with stores I just drive fight down the street an shop there I refuse to pay for parking at a mall it’s ridicules
I've never really walked around the mall i was always at the bowing ally on the 2nd floor GameWorks or the movies!
We used to eat at the old Holsum Restaurant. And Fox's Sherron Inn.
Greedy management, charging for parking got them to this point!
One of the biggest things that killed Sunset Place is the cost of parking in the garage no one should have to pay for parking to go to the mall to spend money if you go to Harborside place in Jupiter which is a very similar place to this there is no charge for parking in the parking garage, or anyplace in the outdoor mall.
I agree with most comments it’s like every other property out here the city must give them huge tax breaks, because they rather keep it empty then negotiate the prices of rent for one, the business, another place and it’s been empty for over a year and he won’t budge for less thanwhat he’s asking not even $100 but they prefer keep it like that. I’m pretty sure the same goes here because that place was beautiful. We used to go there a lot drove from Fort Lauderdale just to go hang out there.
Some people refer to the price of parking or the rent, but it simply suffered the same fate as all malls across the country at the hands of online shopping. It's a combination of those three things, but many places survive despite the first two -- the third is what actually killed it.
In Miami there's a lot of successful malls. Dolphin, westland, ect all are completely full most of the time. Online shopping is a factor but if it was tha main one all these malls would be dead
Who remembers Martini Bar?
The problem with this place is there was overpriced crappy parking and little to no innovation. It just stayed the same exact thing for 20 years and most people aren't interested in the shops they had. I could remember a lot of those shops (with the exception of Gameworks and the book store) had been empty.
Just turn the whole thing into affordable/workforce housing. It's part of the past now.
The only draw there was the Theater and who wants to go to a place they charge for parking on a daily bases. Parking, stores, food didn't nothing for most when they could go down the road to a mall that had a large department stores and bunch more smaller chain stores and restuarants with free parking.
At this stage of the game no matter what they do would be a nightmare for vehicle traffic and parking.
As stupid and costly as it maybe to say, metro rail runs just across the street, but none of the Trains Stations even cater to these malls, like have people bridges from stations to the Mall, not only would peobably improve traffic to these malls and business, but also increase people riding on public transportation such as metro rail.
Why did they Bakery Center go?
Lousy stores not much innovation there over the years.
There is a lot that , it’s time . A lot of missing persons and cold cases .
Man. I used to hoop at the LA fitness there and go to Buffalo Wild Wings afterwards. 😔
Last time i went to florida all i could think is they need to do what freemont street did in vegas hardly anyone used to go there before
That is your solution to the affordable housing crisis.
They plan to include a movie theatre? Do many people still go to theatres anymore?
the best use would be mixed use
It is a cursed location
Make condo's out of them
Florida is chooched, the economy will follow
And i would tax internet sales to fund it
Yea sunset is dead noone goes there because is old and the shops dont look good i rather go to coco walk they recreated the mall and made it new or dadelandor the shop at merrick park at coral gables
I met my ex there at AMC lol
The land is cursed
People buy stuff online malls are dead.
You want too tear down something you might want too start with Miami Gardens! That place is disgusting!
Turn it into affordable housing.
@@thedirtybubble9613 aforable housing is for people who don't have their financial priorities inline. I don't need section 8 in a financially successful independent area. I don't need a slum or constant evictions and homeless development in my yard or down the street
@@mikejames6588 Affordable housing is for everyone you ignoramus. Not everyone can afford to live there anymore. I'm not saying it should be Section 8 but they should make it a below market rate housing complex for working class people or for people struggling to get by. We now have an affordable housing crisis because of people with your tunnel vision thinking.
Mixed used space and affordable housing.
Affordable housing won't make sense. Those tenants wouldn't be able to afford to patronize the high-priced stores.
@@theotheleo6830 So get rid of the stores and turn it into a housing complex.
Move it to SanFrancisco so the vagrants can repurpose it as a drug den.
Turn it into a housing complex
*In walks coral gables billionaire and UM booster John Ruiz to buy the property and build a football stadium for the school*😂
Greedy landlords! Simple
The answer is simple...the management company has been greedy by charging for parking. I know many who have said that they would rather go to Dadeland just a few minutes away, where they don't have to pay for parking. It was perfectly evidenced by a $25 parking charge money grab they pulled on the community, during one of the few special events they held at the mall. With online shopping growing increasingly popular, malls don't need to be giving people reasons to avoid them like parking fees.
Charging for parking just to shop at a mall is ridiculous. I wouldn't go unless I had to.
that happened to a fav place here in TX
