The story plot for the game makes absolutely no sense. Two anthropomorphic cups make a deal with the Devil and gamble away their spirits and fight a bunch of anthropomorphic objects and mythological creatures to claim the contracts they signed to pay for their spirits.
Blame it on Cuphead. He did the gambling.
