U.S. stocks are expected to get a short-term boost in the aftermath of the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump over the weekend, as analysts say the likelihood of his victory in November has increased. Trump's lead has extended itself since Biden's poor debate performance two weeks ago which left his biggest supporters concerned about the president's ability to handle the rigors of another four years in office.
Will the stock market do better under Trump or Biden?

29:45 There was a Heritage Foundation event in April of 2022, where Trump spoke on video, and the former president stated the policies of Heritage were aligned with the wider movement. I believe he was directly linking Heritage Foundation's goals with that of his campaign and prospective administration. Based on the language choice I agree, he has no idea what the foundation's goals are, but he has made a public commitment to them in the past.

Yes. I believe that, while Trump may want to disavow many aspects of Project 2025, the possibility of consolidating more power in his person and having the foundations of government (the administrative state) directly loyal to him, would blind him to implementation of the project by those around him who would seek (and I believe succeed) in controlling him through flattery. While Biden certainly has mental issues, I don't believe that Trump is the picture of mental health either. His own narcissism could prove to be the Achilles heel that allows him to be manipulated by his "aids".

So, what I hear as the most important take-away is that, regardless of who is elected, the limitations which will impact their presidency will hamper their effectiveness to do either any lasting benefit or damage to the economy. The market will ultimately take care of itself and it's best to stand by a simple long-term strategy (e.g. maintaining one's contributions to a 401k).
One of my concerns, however, which Patrick did not address, is a possible politicization of the Fed by a Republican administration. I don't believe that the dollar is going away as the reserve currency anytime soon, but blatant manipulation of our currency would definitely contribute to its slide. Add to this, political grandstanding on the debt ceiling and things start looking even worse for the dollar.
Another point that Patrick did touch on is Trump's statement about tariffs. I heard that he wants to abolish federal income tax by raising tariffs on all goods coming into the country. I read somewhere that, to accomplish the lowering of taxes that Trump envisions, we would need to impose an 85% tariff on all goods resulting in massive inflation.
I'm not really sure of what Trump's vision is, but the vision for the country of Project 2025 is disturbing. Trump has disavowed it. I'm not sure that I trust that.

Well, with presidential immunity and the fact that Trump has no platform this year, I am not as skeptical about Project 2025. Unitary Executive Theory, that SCOTUS will not prevent, will give him unforeseen powers and to install his own loyalists into key administrative state positions. In theory, I don't see it as impossible that Alex Jones ends up running the FDA or Sarah Huckabee's Christian scientists running the USDA and poultry inspections. Minimally, it's going to be a bank heist, since I have a lot of reasons to believe that the GOP is a smokescreen for white collar criminality and not for "Christian nationalism." At worst though, we could end up with a banana republic government like Augusto Pinochet's, and there is a long history of the GOP intellectual underbelly having ties to him and to the Austrian School of Economics. One could accuse me of being overworried, but I'd counter that I wouldn't want any POTUS with Unitary Executive powers, much less one whose entire life has been about passing the buck of his externalities onto everyone else, then writing a white collar crime self-confessional like "Art of the Deal." Far from being a standard contest like in 2016, the stakes are institutionally important this time. Trump and his friends could pull a heist on the American people for which they might have immunity, and Biden might be packing SCOTUS as a way to overturn Unitary Executive Theory (and Dobbs).

It is deceptively misguided (in fact stupid) to place the high stakes of measuring candidate suitability/unsuitability for Presidential office on debate(s). First of all, politicians never follow the basic accepted rules of debate. With rules of debate ignored as they are, debates only measure the verbal agility of of the debaters; a skillful flimflam man, who incessantly lies through his teeth, and gaslights the hell out of his opponents has a distinct advantage over most would be opponents. Far more important candidate attributes such as personality (disorders), character, candor, fealty to entrusted responsibilities (the well being, Constitution/Rule-of-law and American Democracy-based operation of the Nation) are not addressed. A candidate's ability to successfully integrate executive, legislative and judicial function, working with transparent procedures that many times require candor and compromise are far more important measures for the Chief Executive but don't get probed during the debate and don't even get mentioned in the post debate analysis. The nimble liar/con-man has the advantage in the daft and deceptive ways that the press measures "the winner".

Our reality is a symptom of disregard from both parties. The reason Trump is popular is because he's the antithesis to the classic American political class. People are desperate for any kind of change at this point and they'd rather place a bet on a lunatic even though he's taking advantage of their desperation to advance his personal agendas.
It doesn't help that the other party is hellbent on making sure a particular line continues in power disregarding the will of its own base. Biden was never a popular choice and he still isn't but that's what the party leadership decided we should have (and the courts ruled in 2017 they can do this because parties are private entities and may conduct their internal elective processes however they see fit).
At this point, people have very little to do with any of this. What is actually sickening is how little the country's population has control over its own destiny.

The data for 2 countries, China and the US, and one metric, but a VERY serious metric, FDI.
It's pretty clear what trump caused in his last presidency, which was a continual drop in FDI in the US. On the other hand, the VERY THING he was trying to go after, all of the manufacturing in China GREW during trump's time, and FDI in China hit a historic high within the same year he left office. It was on that trajectory though in his last couple years.
FDI in the US hit a historic high under Obama, and is now back around that historic high again, so APPARENTLY people outside the US who invest into other countries' markets didn't like the direction the US was going under trump, but DID/DO under Biden and Obama.
That piece of data don't lie, and it's significant as it shows what the REST of the world thinks about any given country.
FDI in China keeps dropping and is around a 30 year low. Haven't checked the most current numbers but it was at a 30 year low in the last few months and from what I hear it continues to drop with some fluctuation of course as is typical in any market.
trump seems to want to pick favorites which is a no no for a leader of a country when you have free enterprise. He bad mouthed leaders of different companies and hurt them. So, I'd say I'd MUCH rather have the admin. of Biden regardless of him being senile because Biden listens to his admin. On the other hand trump only listens to his wallet. He never listened to his own admin and fired most of them that were approved by Congress if not all and put YES men in their place and for some positions he kept replacing them. That's not what a president should do for the most powerful country of the world.

I'm curious how Trump differs from traditional GOP candidates. The only significant difference I see between his fiscal policy and Reagonomics is the added element of protectionism. Also, the idea that his 2016 victory was fueled by working class voters is questionable, as this is more of a talking point than it is a statistically proven fact. There are several studies that dispute this claim.

Got to love Reagan’s sense of humor.
But he also wasn’t running for office at the time. He had no real reason to keep it in the news cycle because it was a distraction. So this attempt may have more legs.

At current PE the stock market is probably going to be flat over the next decade or so. We're overdue another 1970s or 2000s period of nothing much happening. Line goes up can stop going up for a decade or two easy.

How long does Trump have to be in politics to be considered a politician? He’s been at this formally for 8 years and ran for President in 2000 and 2012. He’s a politician. What he’s not is a believer in democracy.
