From Machine Tools to Machine Learning:
Via decay, dead poets, heart disease and finite elements
Professor Simon Shaw - Professor of Mathematics at Brunel, had a unique journey to academia and impactful research. After an apprenticeship, odd jobs and redundancy, he pursued Mechanical Engineering, becoming a designer before pursuing an Engineering MSc. He eventually pursued a PhD at Brunel, where he developed a passion for approximating decay and hysteresis. After years of teaching and research, he applied his skills to heart disease, gaining a newfound meaning.
As joint Head of Department, he enjoys the benefits of an industry knowledge transfer partnership. He talks about his research using computational mathematics and machine learning in this video.
