- Video I took with Shirley Johnson one recent evening of Texas guitarist extraordinaire David Grissom performing the Jimi Hendrix classic "Little Wing" at a Hendrix seminar at the Cactus Cafe, UT Austin.
one of the most beautiful and in my opinion underused professional guitarists in the world. david grissom needs hiring for more 'gigs'.

subtle, excellent! I'm tired of people covering Hendrix, trying to blast out my eardrums. This is how it should be played.
Wonderfully done, intricately nuanced and melodic. The way he tied the lead to the chords was nothing short of sublime. I will be making a study of his Truefire courses, for sure.
Underrated - underrated. He still is. Hear to Storyville - what a fine band they were. And when he played with Mellencamp - great! But who knows why? He should have become a mayor - but only a few know him ...
Excellent - Nothing more needs to be said, the Guitar says it all.

This is classy, bluesy and beautiful. Leave it Grissom to perform one of the best covers of Little Wing and one that holds true to Hendrix rather than SRV. I'm so tired of all of the people covering SRV's interpretation.

I'm not taking anything away from David. But to even mention SRV is insane!! his interpretation is left untouched!! it might be a matter of personal preference. But any guitar player, that actually plays would agree with me.

Different, and from your site, it's obvious you are a lover of Shawn Lane. No problem with that, but you won't convince anyone. David Grissom is too well established as a highly sought after session and front line musician. Just read the rest of the other posts and replies here. If you don't like Grissom, don't listen to him. I'm not buying your "I love Grissom, but...." statement. I listened to your suggested version, and yes, he is very soulful, with tone to the bone. Ok. Grissom is well..... David Grissom. With his own signature model PRS Guitar and signature PRS amp. That doesn't happen by accident.
Tomas Eduardo Fair comment. I was merely saying I don't think this is the best version of a fantastic song. Out of interest I am a Grissom fan, and have just bought a PRS DGT model 🙂
Fair enough. And I apologize for any arrogance I may have displayed. I think what detracts from this recording is the quality of everything NOT associated with David's playing, like the house mix, or more likely, the cell phone recording distortion. I would also love to have a DTG model, but have too many guitars and amps and not enough money to share with me wife for things like food, electricity, and things like that.
PRS WHY
A Stratocaster may be more appropriate here but a PRS DGT (or McCarty) can handle pretty much anything.
I'm a big fan of Dave, but the distortion on this video is so bad I just can't...
Lovely playing. Lovely. But, I call bullshit on Grissom saying he can get a great Strat tone out of his PRS DGT by coil splitting the neck pickup. Its not even close to a decent MIM Strat tone.
I agree sir! I tried to use all the "gizmo's" out there that was said to get my ES335 to sound like a STRAT and guess what - NOTHING BUT A STRAT SOUNDS LIKE A STRAT! :)
Well, to be fair, he MIGHT be able to... but certainly that's not apparent on this video, but then again, it doesn't say anywhere that was actually shooting for a Strat tone here...
True... Little Wings was written on a Strat and nothing sounds better than in it's original form. But with that said, the song stands on it's own being play on anything :)
There's a video on th e building of the DGT Strat with Grissom and PRS discussing, and Grissom says one of the things he wanted is a Strat tone, and he even plays a Little Wing lick (and Watchtower) to make his point. So, if he wanted a different tone when he was actually playing Little Wing live, that statement - the one I'm calling bullshit - would make zero sense.
Are we talking like putting a Corvette body kit on a VW frame type thing? Imitation comes to mind if so. And YES a strat was the tone they were going for. All this doesn't matter because I've been without a guitar and even having a junker with a warped neck is better than nothing. Play slide on it! WE all know even a shovel will do in time of need :)
