    I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for seven MLF Championships and won over a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.

    I caught my biggest LMB of 2023 this way - snagged my swimbait, walked down the bank to get a better angle and yanked, setting the hook on him in probably 2 feet of water or less. It was awesome

    Most fisheries biologists believe that most bass feed at night, particularly during moon phases where the moon is above the horizon most of the night and therefore they have concluded that as much as 75% of the time a bass strikes a lure as a reaction strike, not out of hunger. Assuming this is true then the ability to generate reaction strikes on a regular basis is critical to catching more bass …

      As primarily a bank angler I take advantage of this thought process as often as possible. I fish the ozark lakes and the clarity causes problems in the daytime. The fish also stay deep, where it’s hard for me to reach them. But, from May through October, I usually only fish at night. I feel like the larger fish move shallow to take advantage of the extra light. My average size catch goes up dramatically, dinks all day in a spot, go back at night, and catch a handful of 3+ lb fish on a normal night. The weeks surrounding the new moon and the full moon are key times. I often plan work around the full and new if at all possible. The other benefit is it’s not 100° outside and I can enjoy the warm evenings. Cheers 🍻

    Great tip, it helps to share some of the tips going forward on each lure/technique you demonstrate on your channel. I learned to twitch my umbrella rig on the retrieve and sometimes give it a strong jerk and slight pause to make it look like a startled bait ball. It helped me catch several nice bass this morning in the same area I tried and failed with 6 other lures/techniques 😉

    That's why I fish all herky jerky. Whatever piece of cover I can use to change a baits trajectory, or even just casting a lure on the bank and hopping it into the water, I'm doing it.
    A lot of people don't realize how stale their fishing cadence is. They're just playing the same song on repeat over and over, and the fish see it constantly.

    Another great video Matt! I've collected what I believe to be all of your "90%" videos and virtually every one involves generating reaction strikes. Just added your underspin from a couple weeks ago. Not familiar enough with YT to know whether you can group all of those in a series but they've certainly helped me and I'm sure other subscribers as well.

    Bumping baits into dock or bridge pilings or rocks can definitely help you get a bite in the saltwater too. And if you want to catch flounder around structure you have to fish close, within inches of the structure. Hitting the structure helps too.

    Throw a lure on the bank and let it fall into the water. Shoot I've had a lure in the water with line stuck in a tree. Just by trying to get the line out of the tree it caused a fish to bit my lure in the water. Fun stuff!!

    Matt could you help me please, explain your spinning rod setup for all that grass, I live in FL and I do well on wacky worm but I throw it on a baitcaster with 15-20# the problem is cast distance, I'd like use spinning but I dont want my heart broken with 10#. Please give me some advice

    Biggest spot I caught last year on Table Rock, my Rock Crawler was hung on a rock. Got up just past it, popped it loose, and WHAM! Fish was obviously sitting there over bait when I passed by and reacted when the bait popped free. Good tip. Hope you get some more hoodies for Christmas! Thanks, Matt! By the way I use your TW Link. • @MattStefanFishing
      @MattStefanFishing  Před 8 měsíci

      I don’t know if there is a line.

    • @insertname941
      @insertname941 Před 8 měsíci +1

      I think its very bait type/category dependent. Like for instance, you dont wanna pop a craw a mile off the bottom when natural craws dont act like that most of the time, whereas with a stickbait you can get bites on a good couple tugs to get it moving. Most of the time as well i feel like if its too slow they wont care, if its too fast they dont wanna chase. Gotta find the happy medium and match the mood of the fish. I found this fall that they really liked erratic dying baitfish behavior, whereas in the summer letting a wacky rig sit and slowly popping it was generating way more bites. The line of strike or not strike is constantly moving with weather, season, time of day, bait type, etc.

    How about when it’s winter time. Can u still get a reaction bite off a jig n cold water?? I always thought when it’s cold u have to just drag a jig.

    • @terrytresemer2864
      @terrytresemer2864 Před 8 měsíci

      Yes! If I have open water, before ice in or just after ice out! Black & Blue jig works pretty well letting it soak for a minute or two before I give it a small pop moving it a foot or so.

  • @edwardcowan7012
    @edwardcowan7012 Před 8 měsíci +1

    I’m all about the reaction strike. It is easier to manipulate a bait to suddenly change speed and direction when it’s heavy. I seldom fish a jig that weighs less than 1/2oz and my Spinnerbaits are generally 1/8-1/4 heavier than would be the norm for the size blades I use. The clearer the water the faster the movement of the bait needs to be to trigger a bite.
