I thought D16 had died, glad to hear they're still alive. Loved the sound of the original Phoscyon, but the inability to resize the window effectively (and a bug in the copy pattern function) put me off using it ever again. Welcome back, now update Punchbox please.
Update: So I finally got around to trying the demo. This is the best 303 emulation I've ever used. Loads of extras without complicating the interface. You can automate parameters in Logic Pro, so no LFOs needed for me to sweep that filter knob. It's worth every penny IMO.
In case anyone is wondering, if you own version 1 there is a coupon when you log into your account, which you can use on checkout to pay $29 instead of $89. It wasn't obvious to me but I'm very grateful for that discount!
i completely agree.. the emulation of the clunky tb-303 step sequencer (and its sometimes awkward interface) forces you into a particular type of workflow really helps create authentic sounding parts that you just wouldn't get with a standard piano roll.
They certainly upped the quality of the 303 sound with this version 2. V1 was a travesty really. This here sound in version 2 reminds me of my td 303 behrnger clone, wich is exellent. I did also however upgrade my phoscyon 1 to this new version 2 after hearing the demos and how majorly the sound has improved. I dont mind those new functions either.. Disclaimer: I never fiddled with a real 303. my first 303 thingy was proppellerheads rebirth. Also glad i bought into phoscyon1 back in the day so the upgrade price was more than fair. Thanks man, never saw your channel before. Iam sub now :)
They really improved over the first version a lot. Especially the UI isn't a nightmare on high resolutions anymore. Now, I actually want to use it. Though, I am a huge fan of ABL3. Time will tell, if Phoscyon 2 can grow on me enough to become my go to 303. I do not own Roland's TB-303 VST, but I have the TB-3, which is also based on ACB. It's a good option. I hope thar Roland has it on sale, one day.
Emulations always sound a bit too clean to me but this one sounds pretty good all things considered. I really like the advanced sequencer. Doesn't try to get too fancy but very usable. I'm on the fence about the price. The 303 engine is really simple. Propellerhead did an emulation back in the 90s or so, that was VERY good and it was free for ages till Roland had it taken down.
ahhh nice, good to hear your take on this, still think the square wave is missing that magic the ALB3 has. I'd have taken modulation source's and mapping over effects I can add myself anyway later in the chain.
Just upgraded my copy thanks to this demo. What I´d love to see is a pt2 in which you show how bitwig modulators can do good things with this plug and a pt3 for hardware controllers. I assume pot controllers can be mapped to cutoff and resonance, but what about, say, a launchpad for step sequencer programming? As a Bitwig n00b, I don´t know if that can be done at all, but if there is one DAW I would trust to make it possible....
Yea sure! Unf the hardware versions don’t have extension midi except the modded ones, so even cutoff mapping is impossible, but I’ll do some more in bitwig with Phoscyon for sure! Also check some of my Recent streams, I’ve Been using it a lot 😁
@@DashGlitch Ofc, it can't be compared, both are different. But i don't think the sound of Alien 303 is weak. It is just different. I use it often, if i need some acide groove in my tracks.
I am using Phoscyon 2 a lot in my new upcoming tracks. This instrument has made doing acid extremely fun and satisfying again. I am curious to what type of effects chains people are using in conjunction with this synth without using the built in fx or in combination
Does this have the rising filter effect of the 303? On 303s, when you hit notes before the last notes filter envelope reached baseline, it adds to it each time, so it can go higher each hit in repetition. This is the effect I need. Does this do it? Rolands emulation doesn't... lol
Hey how do I turn the plugin to come on and off during different sections of my track and to also switch between the different sequences I've created on for example 1 and 2. Thank you
For me the easiest method is to use the drag midi function, then arrange like I would traditional MIDI - it's on the "export" tab in the plugin :) Otherwise I'm pretty sure you can automate it with parameters
Hi Community. How can i Change the pattern in Sequencer Mode with Phoscyon 2 in Ableton 11 with Automation in the Track Arrangement. Is it always possible when i record and than Change the pattern in Phoscyon? Thanks for helping me and sorry for my Bad Englisch
the 303 didn't have tie in it's sequencer, because the envelope is AD not ADSR, so there is no parameter for sustain which is essentially what the tied step adds.
@@DashGlitch Yes, the TB-303 as tie in Time Mode (maybe I don't use the right word?). What I mean by 'tie', corresponds to the UP/Triplet/0 key on the TB-303.
There are tutorials with the roland tb-303 where someone recreate a famous track and shows the pattern you have to follow. With the roland Tb-303 there is a section called time mode. You can choose between normal note, held note and pause. How can I recreate such patterns with the phoscyon 2? The phoscyon has no held note.
@@DashGlitch But this is not the same. With the Roland TB-303 I can make different sound. 1x times with a held note and the other with a slide. I have no roland but I think it would sound different. The AD Envelope should effect on the slide, I think. But it would effect all slides same. I could not make two different styles.
@@masterreif I have a 1-to-1 hardware clone of the original hardware 303, the roland cloud plugin is not the same. Perhaps it allows for more options which is nice, but it deviates from the original 303 for reasons like this
@@DashGlitch Love your content Dash. I am just starting to make some Psytrance beats as I'm moving back into hardware to do some live stuff after a 20-year break. Learning a lot from you. So I am new to creating music and just bought a TD-3 from Bhringer. Would you suggest that I sell it and get this or should I keep the hardware and use it. The VST looks like you can control it more with the DAW then then actual hardware.
For me..The high resonance, reminds me that the artist, is trying hard, to make people hear that " I'm using a 303", it sounds like they're using cheap tactics to get the listener to think, "oh , must be cool, that's that dance noise" a bit like the Blade films soundtrack...or am I being to ,,err,,critical??Blade soundtrack is ok, ,,But,,,docent do much,,,I love the 303, and there's loads more it can do, I do think it gets used as a trigger for people to hear it, and automatically think, must be a good tune..
If you want to confine yourself within the parameters that the 303 pattern allows, it helps to nail the perfect acid sound every time. Sometimes making the pitch too high or low can easily destroy the sound ;) But yea, whatever works for you
have to just love that 303 sound...since I heard it back in 1988
You heard it before '88 in countless songs, you just didn't know it yet. 😊
