  • In this film, Nicolas Pasternak Slater, an eminent translator of Dostoevsky and Pushkin and nephew of Boris Pasternak explains the story of Boris Pasternak’s only novel, Doctor Zhivago and why it was so controversial and disturbing to the Soviet regime.
Set against the tumultuous backdrop of 20th-century Russia, Doctor Zhivago is the epic story of Yuri Zhivago, a poet and physician who finds himself drawn into a battle between the Bolshevik Red Army and the anti-Communist Whites and torn between his love of two women.
Lavishly decorated with more than 60 illustrations by the author’s father, Leonid Pasternak, selected by academic and author Maya Slater, this spectacular volume brings together the creative brilliance of three generations of Pasternaks.
Bound in leather and hand-marbled paper, and gilded on all three page edges, this edition is a work of art both in its content and binding. Limited to 750 hand-numbered copies, each edition is signed by the translator. Now available exclusively from The Folio Society.

In the late 60s I saw the beautiful movie with my mother and father, They cried and with my mother explaining, I got the proper message. Several years later I waded through the book all by myself Finally, now, many yrs later. it's difficult to know how the USSR kept so many secrets. I fell in love with Laura. It is very possible to love more than one.

My all time favorite movie....I was mesmerized from the soft overture, when the musical bridge segued into the title of the film. (I had never seen something like that at the start of a movie.) Raised Catholic, and one of the parents spoke negatively about the film because he said it glorified adultery. But I disagreed and said I was rooting for Yuri to stay w/ his wife Tonya. Then, surprisingly, our Cath. HS had an analysis of the film in our weekly teen church magazine (analyzing the intense interview of Yuri Z. by Strelnikoff near the stalled train.) But, no moral judgements in the review, rather, just pointing our film techniques like shooting through reflections and windows.

Thank you. I was hoping to see photographs of the man who existed. Lately, I have been enjoying Russian born stiv Morgan's music. Ice y fire is a fine video with the travels of a leopard included. My great grandfather was from Russia. I looked it up y they said the movie was filmed in Spain. I was unaware that Spain had snow. Again, thank you for taking your time of of you're life to put out this video. Shalom, sister Sherry of Massachusetts.

Much of the shooting was fake snow....good job of stage technique. The frozen Varykino mansion w/ ice all over it, and through it, was filmed in the hot summer; the white ice was plastic. The snow on the ground was mining dust.

Hi Mirian! Apologies, but this new translation is exclusive to Folio and we only publish in hardback. Our original limited edition sold out, but we do still have this wonderful core edition if that helps: www.foliosociety.com/dr-zhivago-core.html

Your current "core edition" looks beautiful, but unfortunately is beyond my means.

Boris Pasternak has Ukrainian roots and this person also has Ukrainian roots by being a nephew of him . Originally the family came from Odessa Ukraine and later on moved to Russia.
