      Proof that ANY product is overpriced? When you have more supplies than demands (sellers have the product lying around the store/warehouse unsold for a long time). Proof that ANY product is underpriced? When you have more demands than supplies (sellers can't find enough of these because they are flying out the store/warehouse or the manufacturer cant produce them fast enough). This simple measure is proven correct in world of economics.

    Love OP!! Prestwick is the mutts nuts!! I was very fortunate back in the day to play for University of Glasgow and we had an annual match against Old Prestwick members. We'd go down and play four balls in the morning and usually win comfortably, then we'd change into our jacket and ties, have an incredible lunch in the fantastic clubhouse, and so much booze...so much. Then we'd stagger out in the afternoon and get absolutely destroyed! Never seen so many horrific tee shots from good players on #1 hahaha Great memories, thanks OP!!

My step dad use to teach lessons and was a golf shop pro for four seasons hotels. I find so much inspiration listening to your podcast and watching the good good channel. I know you’re never too old to start playing golf just wish I started earlier but between your channel and theirs I find so much inspiration to keep striving to be better. Maybe one day I’ll win a little tournament and be content. Learning on a set of ping I3 0-size.

    I guess I am a brand snob as well. I love my Titleist golf clubs but have tried other brands especially in wedges and woods. I even had Kirkland wedges and loved them after I re gripped them. The thought of buying less expensive premium brands have crossed my mind. The main reason I don’t is because I can’t re sell them in case I don’t like them or want to upgrade later i know I can resell the big name brands for a decent amount even if they are a few years old.

    Watched the English Challenge at St Mellion last Sunday, and the quality was amazing. The second shot by the winner Euan Walker into 18 over water to about 4 ft was one of the best shots I've ever seen. Yet most of the players on this tour struggle to make a living without sponsorship deals.

    Thanks for answering my question. As you said, it can be used for a lost ball. As for position of relief, check the rule (8E.5) you can in fact drop it on the fairway! Relief area reference points are A were the ball is believed to have been 'lost' and B the point on the fairway no close to the hole. From there it's two club lengths, so part of the fairway comes into the relief area. We have certainly started to use it on our friendly matches as it keeps the round going.

    • @davidfletcher6836
      @davidfletcher6836 Před rokem

      It was going to be introduced in the last rules changes but was removed and became a local rule. I guess the issue being that where do you prove the ball went out of bounds. Not sure if many courses adopted the rule.

    Interesting topic discussing pricing on new clubs, especially irons. As a mizuno fan ever since I had my first proper set as a junior (MX-15s and MP60 first set I got custom fit for), currently using MP63’s and the set as lasted almost 12 years and I’m looking to upgrade next year. With custom fitting the MP63’s cost around the £500-£600 mark whereas almost any new set of mizuno irons is touching £1000+ which on the face of it is very expensive. But I do get that there’s a lot of R&D behind when you read up on what the manufacture say which would bump the price up along with other factors like inflation etc. I just hope we never see the day where drivers will be £1000+ and irons touching £2000 but if it does it wouldn’t come as a surprise. Love the videos and the podcast Rick great content

    I changed my driver and 5 wood at the start of the year. Went to an American Golf range as an initial dip in the ocean, was initially handed a set of MacGregors to try - loved the 5 wood, hit it pure 200 yards every time bolt straight, couldn't get on with the driver - the head seemed to be set at a weird angle. Tried Calloway and Cobras and didn't really like either of them. Went to a different range at a local club and got fitted for Ping G425s at their fitting centre which I love. Would have been happy to go with the MacGregors had I been able to hit the driver as well as the 5 wood, but certainly wasn't in the initial thought process for new clubs. Marketing is a big thing with the bigger brands over the smaller brands - you never see MacGregor or RAM being advertised so they're not in the general golfing subconscious as much as the bigger brands.

    Ben Ross are my go to brand. I can buy relatively cheap and if I don't get on with I can move them on for roughly the same price (I buy in the second hand market). I also like Wilson for the same reason. Both brands are also bloody good.

  • @GeorgeLavallin
    @GeorgeLavallin Před rokem +32

    Golf is perceived as a ‘premium’ activity. You have to put on a special outfit, smart shoes. A day out playing golf just ‘feels’ like a premium activity for a lot of people. Using Ben Ross irons, or budget gear/clothing feels like walking into the four seasons wearing jeans and your Clarks school shoes. People want to go into the course and feel special, feel premium. I think that’s why brands like Ben Ross are often overlooked by the casual golfer or mid handicapper (which would be these brands target audience).

      I don't agree with this at all. To me at the moment there are 3 tiers of golf clubs...those that are pay as you play, where all types of clubs are welcome and any type of player. Then the ones where membership is open to all, these you have to look the part, but don't need premium equipment to be a member...then there are the clubs where you have to be invited to be a member or buy your way in, these you need premium everything... I have played at all three types and my £500 set was probably the best for my ability and I score on average 35 Stableford points....clubs do not make a difference in play just in perceived stature.

    I’ve had a set of Ben Ross for about 7 years and they’re still going strong. I bought them off a Pro who played off +3 and used to love rocking up to tournaments and be written off because of his equipment and then winning. I bought the Driver, 3wood, 5wood, irons SW-6iron was half the price of my previous set of Calloway X18 irons and I’ve used them for longer than the Calloways! The Driver broke about 18 months ago when I kept hitting the ball off the top of the face so now have a Taylor Made SIM2 but apart from this the Ben Ross clubs are great and I would definitely buy these new ones.

    Great point about recreational golfers playing illegal clubs. I would actually love to see them out on the course. Golf is a hard game, and having a crazy jumbo driver that would allow the recreational player to pop one out there as far as a scratch golfer would be great. Probably pick up pace of play for the entire course. I'm all for it.

    It is a local rule example and suggestion in Randa’s publications. And you may drop on the fairway, two clubs off the first cut, but not closer the hole than where the original ball went OB or got lost.
    At St Andrews Links Castle course it is implied with only one shot penalty as local rule to speed up the game. You may drop in first cut near the spot, where you lost your ball into the fescue.

    One really annoying habit, especially with younger low single digits to me is,
    When people let’s the flagstick fall after picking it off the hole onto the puttig surface in manner, where the bottom end is on the ground. Some sticks are actually quite heavy and generate speed by the leverage by th length and weight they present. When fallin the pole makes half-pipe type rails on the soft greens especially and nobody have ever been seen repair the rails done by the stick.
    Putting across such a hollow straight line, the ball is to follow the ”tube” instead of reading the line as it is.

    There is so many levels of elite golf, no question about it, but intrstingly World DP Tour coverages show basically every shot fron guys like Wilson, yet he were six or even more behind, while there are others, not so Brittish, who are in contention, or only few shots back the lead.

    I like the comments about pricey clubs and brand snobbery. I am a "working class" golfer, my village course is a 9 hole par 68 through 18 and only £12 for 18 holes. I play twice a week with the same set of clubs I had as a teenager, Hippos, with Lake balls and I'm happy as a pig in poo. Guess it depends on your goals 😁

    2 years ago I went for a custom fitting with the intention to buy a set of new irons. I went in really liking a set of Cobra irons, but they weren't right for me. I ended up with a set of Wilson Staff D7s with heavier shafts, a little upright and thicker grips - which I hit so much better than the Cobras and other clubs I tried. When I came out the shop someone asked what I had just bought. When I told them you could see right up their nostrils! Don't be a golf snob - play with what's right for your game.

    You guys highlighted a point, if the MENA tour is getting world points and no one knows about them, then why wouldn't LIV get world points for their golfers?

    Had a set of Wilson FG V6 irons basically because they were £400 cheaper than the Taylormade's at the time
    There V6's are great clubs......but 3 years on now replaced with TM P770's basically because I could afford it

    On the Ben Ross irons. For £700 you can buy some srixon zx7s from golfbidder... Not really a tough choice.

    Can't be sympathetic to the argument about club costs and why the less expensive clubs would be somewhat suspect just due to their lower cost...I am using a mismatched set of clubs, most of which I bought at the local thrift shop, paying $3-$5 dollars for each...I did splurge and bought a nice driver, fairway woods and some hybrids, second hand of course, along with a new putter, but didn't spend more than $30 for any one club. I shoot consistently in the low 80's and firmly believe success in golf is all about technique, mental focus and course management, along with practice, not the clubs.

    Guy I'm not sure on your comment about pricing of "premium forged irons" being just $699 back in say 2014. I specifically remember even with PUD at a golf shop I'd be looking at almost $100 per club for just basic shaft/grip on it.

    An off brand of clubs may perform well in the long when I go to get a new set a bigger brand name holds a better trade in value. When I upgrade my driver I trade my old one in end up paying $200 for the new one.
