Seiko, a brand most often associated with affordable dive watches, also has a compelling collection of field watches with roots dating back to 1959 and the Seiko Laurel Alpinist. More recently, Seiko has found success with two of its field watches under the Seiko 5 umbrella, the SNK and SNZG, but collectors often griped about the too small or too large sizing of those two collections. In this video, I'll take a look at Seiko's new SRPG27, a new Seiko 5 with dimensions that neatly split the difference between the aforementioned cult classic field watches from Seiko.

I just bought one. I love it. Being an officer in the Royal Navy, I may find myself being rather wet (i.e. submerged in water) on occasion, for rather long and indeterminate periods of time, when it isn't my idea and I don't get a vote (i.e. I can't simply decide that I'm not going to be wet any longer). I need a watch that can take that kind of abuse in action working dress, but then also looks fine to wear to a mess dinner later that week. I also need a watch that is not too expensive and is reliable. This is that watch.

Got the SRPG39 (same watch, but with a blue dial and a leather strap) and like it. The 4R36 is a reliable movement, and pretty accurate. Makes for a good everyday watch - but is nice enough to pass as a dressy watch due to to the leather strap. With a metal bracelet or rubber strap, this would be good for swimming or snorkeling (100m water resistance). The price is reasonable, too. Recommendable.

I always wear a watch, but cannot bear having a giant watch on my arm. I used to wear a Fossil which is perfectly usable, but at 42mm is simply too big. After about half-a-year of research, I settled on buying this Seiko on a NATO strap. The size is perfect and I love the atheistics of it. I finally found that my favorite parameters for watch sizes are between 38mm-39mm. This fits great. Yet, it does not have good lum. I, then, started looking for a GREAT lum watch. I settled on a Lum-Tec watch, which is absolutely outstanding! Yet, I still come back to this Seiko as my daily EDC for the simple fact that it has a day/date window.

I think the 7s2x are under appreciated and its really a matter of perspective in considering whether the 4r3x is an upgrade or not. Back in the day the non hand winding movements like the 6206 or 6309(not cheap then, nos not cheap now) were considered ‘true automatics.’ Hacking and handwinding adds complications that can fail, not to mention a watch’s #1 vulnerability - the user. There are even old ww2 fliegers and field watches that don’t hack. not sure what the obsession is.

The low end bracelet is a disappointment (even by Seiko standards). Seeing as it's at the $275 MSRP price point for them, it's not too surprising. I think design is great - contemporary and historic at the same time. I can see wanting lumed numerals, but the raised numbers add a bit of class, and there will not be any issues reading it with the lume that is there. I love the red tipped seconds hand as well. I think it's a great update to their Seiko 5 field line. I preferred the looks of the SNGZ models personally. The 37mm is too small for me, and although I can easily wear 42, it's a bit large for a field watch for my wrist. I have the same issue with the Hamilton Khaki having 38, 42, and even a 44mm(!) options. I don't prefer the design of the Khaki King at 40mm, and the reduced water resistance of that model hurts the appeal for me. The new SRPG line size is right in that sweet spot, and that domed crystal is nice. The SRPG29 blue dial is also gorgeous. What would be nice is for Seiko to release a higher priced version with a sapphire crystal, and better bracelet similar to what's on the new SZSB models or even the Alpinists. I wonder if the Strapcode Super-O would fit here. I imagine it would, and I just love it on my SPB089 Alpinist. Even adding that would still be cheaper than a Hamilton Khaki.

Hi Teddy. I’ve been watching your videos for a while. I was wearing the Casio Duro for a good while and now I finally just bought my first automatic watch which is this Seiko SRPG27. I was debating between this watch and the newer Seiko SSK023 GMT. I ended up valuing the day-date over the GMT currently but I think I might just have to get both haha! I wanted to thank you for all of your help and your excellent advice. I thoroughly enjoy your videos and your professional take on watches. The world of these mechanical and automatic watches has opened my eyes to wonder what else could be powered by the beautiful mechanical movements of these watches! I haven’t watched all of your videos yet but I was wondering if you have done a video looking into how various watch movements are built and developed and what kind of novel movements you would like to see in the future.

Really appreciate the review. A nice offering at an affordable price point for an everyday watch. For the extra $200 I would just get the Hamilton which is a better watch and a lot slimmer (Seiko @ 13.2mm vs. Hamilton @ 9.5mm) so it would be more comfortable on my seven-inch wrist.

Typically NOT a Seiko fanboy but pulled the trigger on the blue dial version for $199. This a just a nice little "everyday" beater that will fit nicely in my collection however, that hideous band WILL be replaced with many decent straps. At least Seiko thought ahead a little and gave us drilled lugs.

You can buy now in Daiso Japan a field watch with the same dial, without any brand logo (clean dial) with a TMI Singapore Quarz caliber (=seiko!!) with nylon Natostrap for 550yen, around 3 Euro or 4 dollars. Yes, made of plastic, but with lume on the Indizies and hands, in black case or military green case. Mostly sold out, but with a seiko movement!!!! Unbeatable!!!!!! The dial is made out of steel and printed with silkscreen. Not waterproof, but come on. Accuracy is amazing!

I think Seiko should come out with a Nato strap version without the display back. Neither the band or the display of the movement which is ugly improves the watch. I would take the savings deleting these items and give the watch a flat
sapphire crystal that is more durable and would make the watch slimmer.

I have an SNK809. Nice looking watch but it is an absolute pest because it has no winder and stops at about 3 am and then has to be re-set, with an awkward little crown. The day-date is a further nuisance as that also has to be reset if the watch has been resting for more than a day. As far as I am concerned, not being able to wind a watch is a deal breaker after that. I prefer my Vostok Amphibia. As soon as I can find a suitable replacement, the SNK is heading for retirement in the box it came in.

These SRPGs look great. The S logo instead of the 5 in the pentagon. Mine is the SRPG41 version. It says Made in Japan at the bottom of the dial--maybe that's may be why some posters are complaining about the price. The hands have the greenish blue lume instead of the usual green. 🙂⌚

So glad to see a few reviews and discussions on CZcams about this watch, and especially from you! Just seen this and it really really did grab my attention from a near Orient mako 2 purchase to be honest! Like a lot of what the Orient is offering, but it's just that little wobbly crown and a tad too much just a paint finish dial rather than this lovely sunburst dial when comparing the blue dials together...but I really need to ask you Teddy, as I've seen this very watch on a site of a major Japanese site, then searching it on Amazon and seeing it there....comparing the two watches, the pictures anyway, near identical, and I mean in just about every way, and when looking hard I may actually be able to notice I think on both dials it states even the same movement inside to! However....!...on the Amazon uk site it's got some other sort of reference and sold as some other name, whereas on the Japan based site, it's just like this one you're showing here...!...with 'made in japan' in the dial, and also with a very different code or name set for it! Is it usual for Seiko to assign different names and also to omit logos or 'made in japan' print off international versions,.?...or are there indeed any differences? Other than the extra 88 British pound sterling import duty I'm going to have to pay?

The bead blasted case of my SRPG37 says “field watch” while the altimeter-style hands say “aviator watch.” The metallic numerals flash on and off depending on viewing angle. Reflection from the domed crystal can obscure the face entirely. The watch is growing on me slowly. I can’t return it, so I’d better learn to like it.

I’m really thinking about buying this very model. I have an SRPD89 and I love it. I want to upgrade my Timex Expedition to an automatic field watch and I was thinking about saving for a Khaki but its just too much of a stretch for me at almost $600. If I’m going to save that much, I’d rather put aside $1000 for a Mido Ocean Star, a Junghans Max Bill or a Mido Multifort Patrimony. But I really like the SRPG27- it looks like a Khaki and its still a high quality piece. It would be super fun to have next to my SRPD, my Bambino, and my Marlin Auto.

I own several Hamilton Khakis, and I actually quite prefer the new Seiko SRPG. Not sure why, but I really prefer the day date complication to be sitting at the 3 oclock position. There are a couple Hamilton Khakis that have the day date at 3 oclock, but they are all 42MM and larger. I don't like large watches. I was seriously happy when I got my SRPG. Scratches all the itches in what I want from a field watch, and does it better than Hamilton.
