    Unless you were alive and present 1998, you have no idea how this song and this album influenced the pop landscape. After this was released, everyone else was adding electronic sounds to their songs.

      While that may be true if you know anything about symbolism and "spelling" you'd realize she is definitely using the dark side of magik. We use grey magik every day but that's the "neutral" areas.

    Madonna truly is a chameleon in the music industry, not just reinventing her music multiple times, but her own image too. She is a great artist, who doesn’t get the full recognition she deserves! Check out more from the ray of light era. I love drowned world/substitute for love, and the power of goodbye.

    So glad to see you both enjoying this Madonna journey so much! Her catalog is extremely diverse and full of surprises and left turns. I'd recommend checking out "Don't Tell Me", "Human Nature", "La Isla Bonita" or "Express Yourself" next. "Oh Father" is also another one with a particularly striking video.

    This amazing artist has literally ruled and led the music industry for 40 years. She set the standards so high that no one will ever catch up. A visionary and creative genius that did it all on her own terms with hard work and an iron will that bulldozed over society's preconceived notions and judgements with breathtaking guts and intelligence. She paved the way and all the others followed in awe. Biggest selling female artist of all time with close to 400 million records sold and the biggest selling solo touring artist of all time with over 1.5 billion dollars in ticket sales alone. Best live act on this planet her tours are stunning and spectacular and out of this world. You are in for a wild ride. She don't give a flying fuck what you think of her and she worked and fought hard for that privilege. Broke boundaries and created a new standard in the music industry for creative expression and artistic control. Try Papa don't Preach from 1986 next. Biggest selling song of that year about teenage pregnancy. She was always brave and brash and stood up for minorities since the beginning of her career. She paved the way. J

    Madonna had already firmly established herself as the "queen of pop" when this came out.
    When she began her singing career, she basically sang bubblegum dance pop and most critics thought she was all image. She wasn't a great singer, and her vocals actually had to be sped up for her first couple of albums to smooth out vocal imperfections.
    She worked *hard* on her technical singing abilities and she expressed her artistic and sociopolitical viewpoints after she gained success.
    In 1996, she played Evita in a major motion picture, and she won the Golden Globe for Best Actress. Her acting performance is not stellar, but her singing is beautiful and the result of a tremendous amount of work, honing her abilities to the very limits.
    This is from her 1998 album Ray of Light. It was regarded as groundbreaking both personally for Madonna and musically. I was very into electronic music and especially trance at this time and her sounds were not new to me, but she really made the among best combination of trance-type electronic music and pop music that has ever been produced. Ray of Light (the album; I'm not wild about the song itself) stands as a real artistic accomplishment, and I think this album was the one that made every naysayer admit Madonna is a brilliant artist in her own right.
    She has continued to make interesting music and fun music. She's had a lot of hits and a lot of misses, but her artistry explores like few others in pop music, and she really maintained a perfect balance of pop and genre shifting for decades. My favorite artist is Tori Amos (Kate Bush is a close second-I've seen how you feel about her), and their music and lyrics are head and shoulders above Madonna's, but Madonna and her producers were better than anyone at pushing the limits while almost always hitting the mainstream interest up through her dance album Confessions on a Dancefloor. After that, she fell out of the zeitgeist.

    it's very cinematic & grand in scale. The 1st single off the Ray of Light album & at 1st listen it was a HUGE surprise. In fact it took more than a few listens to appreciate ALL it had to offer. There was a huge PR buildup to it but nobody expected a song that did THAT! it was M's 1st new music since the Evita era a few years before, and the entire project was VERY highly anticipated & VERY well received. Madonna, having a baby just a couple of years prior, was back in top form... some say in the best form she's ever been in. I tend to agree. an album like ROL 16 years into a staggering career easily helped Madonna transition into her electronic/spiritual phase. her biggest 'reinvention' ever... & her continued reign as the most famous woman on the planet.
    This one had some banger remixes too... as do most of Madonna's songs.
    *Again, next 2 requests... Express Yourself, Oh Father.^
    *_great Madonna reactions!_*

  • @AppleCinnamon1
    @AppleCinnamon1 Před rokem +13

    She has a very versatile, beautiful, storytelling performance singer's voice. She can go from campy, innocent- sexy and celebratory to deep, dramatic and theatrical. Some see it as her reinventing herself. That may be true to some extent, but I see it more as she expressing different sides to her own character and her voice. The one constant in her body of work is her fabulous storytelling voice. "There is only one Madonna"!

    Madonna always surprises with each and every album and shows a new side and sound. This is one of her best songs, from one of her best albums. She was in her spiritual phase and just gave birth to her first child when she recorded this. There are too many songs to suggest in her 40 year career and counting. It's nice to see a young generation appreciating her art!

  • @Lemarcus03
    @Lemarcus03 Před 2 lety +17

    A little history. Madonna came on the scene in early 80s & while very successful, some said that she sounded like Minnie Mouse on helium. Then, with her 3rd album, True Blue, her voice was noticeably more well rounded. From there, she just got bigger & bigger, culminating in her Greatest Hits Album & Blonde Ambition Tour, which has a documentary, Truth or Dare. And Vogue was her biggest & I think considered the song of the decade. Dance Floors were dangerous when Vogue played because of all the Vogueing.
    There was a backlash with her Sex book in the mid 90s & some predicted that she would decline.
    Her career kind of had a rebirth with her Ray of Light álbum. She had experimented with blending emotion & techno music. That's enough for now...

    You would probably really love the entire Ray of Light album. It's her most experimental album and there's a lot of this sort of ambience and electronic sounds mixed with cords and some crazy percussion.

    The music video (MV) was filmed in 1998 in a dry lakebed in the Mojave Desert in CA. As characteristic of the high production quality of her MVs and concert tours, here, she again succeeds in putting together all the artistic and technical elements to capture and convey to her audience the messaging of this song-that of a mystical perspective of the female angst and melancholy that results at times, from the coldness and apathy of the object of one’s love. This song and others from her Ray of Light (ROL) album represents a turning point era in her life and career when she’s matured, became more deeply introspective and spiritual following: the birth of her daughter, Lourdes; her journey into Eastern mysticism (Hinduism, Buddhism, Ashtanga yoga, and Kabbalah); and her successful lead actress role in the film musical, Evita. Appreciate you covering Madonna and really enjoyed your reactions to her music.

    Y'all she has so many interesting songs and just WHAT videos! Bedtime Stories is like I took drugs. That is an interesting song lyrically and visually. She has some live performances where she just sits on steps and delivers the most beautiful and stripped-down versions of "You Must Love Me" and "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" from her movie Evita. She's got a stadium full of fans in Argentina. I love her voice, but this was something so special. She had some kind of connection going on there that elevated the final performance. I'm like, she did this vocally at the end of the concert? Absolutely amazing!! I love y'all. Btw, there's a lot going on in "Frozen". The henna (ms?) tatoos and hand gestures were controversial to some Middle Easterners. I think the whole video, strikingly beautiful has a lot going on that y'all will have to look up! Btw again, Madonna's Italian. Her hair is dark. Blonde, honey blonde, platinum blonde, brown, black, whatever color she's always beautiful. I don't like some of her stuff. It just isn't right for me. But, there is a lot that's perfect. I'm a guy that loves Madonna. I feel like I just came out of the closet, lol! I love her not the diva stuff.

    Love watching your reactions seeing Madonna’s art, her ballads are on a different level. Need to listen to Live To Tell (needs to be album version, not the video!) Oh Father and Spanish Eyes.

      Ps The Look Of Love is so underrated and a forgotten track. It was released in UK in December 1987 as a Christmas single. I bet you any money Marissa will love it!!

    This song is from 1998, 2009 is the year it was uploaded on CZcams. Madonna is also Italian, her real hair colour is dark brown and yes, she was wearing a wig here. So the girl in the video has a preconceived idea of what Madonna's artistry is about and she was "not expecting" a song like this from M. How does this make sense? Your surprise is based on your assumption of who Madonna was? Hilarious.

    Keep exploring the Ray of Light LP. The LP has videos for the title track, Frozen, and Nothing Really Matters. You’ll see that Madonna morphs into a completely different look pretty much for any LP she puts out. Also, if you haven’t as of yet, check out Human Nature… one of my all times faves…
