summer is really good if you live close by the sea and like swimming in the ocean, cuz u know, salty/dry dreads lock a bit faster in my experience ^.^
you are cuttest human ever...literally😀
I Started My Locs In Spring So That I Could Utilize The Water. As Yu Know I Semi Freeform And The Water When It Rains makes My Dreads And Loose Hairs Tighten. Im Haitian And I Have Thick Coarse Hair So Water Alone Makes It Tighten So Personal Opinion Spring Is The Best Time
I believe winter is better. Less sweat and less oils are produced in the winter time, which in return is better for new younger dreads. The only I would say to start them in the summer is if you live at the beach. Salt water in your hair several times a week is a great maturing agent
I started mine in spring, and the few months i spent in the sea in summer helped A LOT with the process, id say summer or spring is the best time to start if you will be going in to the sea :)
I started mine in middle of October, about 40-50 degree weather. PERFECT for my hair type! I have extremely dense, thick, coarse hair, so summer time is my least favorite season as my hair is extremely hot on my head and makes me sweat 12 times more than normal. I'm glad I started them when I did, because I can only imagine how many loose hairs I'd have in summer due to the heat and humidity of where I live. (It's insane how humid it gets here.) I'm hoping by summer that humidity won't have an affect on my dreads at all, but I could be wrong.
I recently just subbed to your channel and I know that some of these vids are old but I considered starting slow with dreads. So I'm partially dreading to see how it goes. I know that doing that there are 2 different methods that I'm going to have to do to take care of my hair but regardless if it's a full head or partial I'm fully committed and super excited for my dread journey. Thank you for all your vids of advice and info!!!
Started mine on the 19th September, very pleased with how quickly they've locked up, definitely feeling the hat effect!
I personally think summer is good because if youre a person who goes to the beach alot, salt water is great for dreadlocks.
I think I'm finally ready to start my dreads!! BTW you totally remind me of Jack Whitehall :)
As a tiny female who gets cold easily, I thought summer would be better because of the pain of drying washed dreadlocks. I live in Chicago, and damp dreads in January doesn't sound fun.
I'm glad I started my dreadlocks in winter
another pro for summer is you can swim in the ocean more often witch will help and also your hair will dry faster because of the sun
September for me. Right before winter, great timing :D I wasn't planning it actually (cause I don't mind the mess), but it's cool man, it's cool.
I started mine on April 7, so in spring and I think it was a good decision. It was during my easter vacation, so I've got a week to get a bit used to them. And I'd have the problem of a sweaty head in winter as well because I do sports three times a week and always feel a bit disgusted of myself afterwards. I think spring is a good time because in fall it's always very rainy here and I would not like wet dreads all the time (not a big fan of hats). We'll see how my dreads are going.
I think I agree. I started mine in february so I could hide them and it did keep me warm haha! ( Im from canada) but I knew more what to expect for the heat before summer came.
Welp! im about to start my dreads RIGHT after prom, so mine will be summer dreads. Now, I have Reeealllly curly thick hair, and back when i had synth dreads, I accidentally left a sectioned bit in the back loose, and when i took my synthetic dreads out a month later, i had a pretty tight lock for a month. and i didnt even know i had it ! lol. anyywayss my hair is FINALLY long enough, so i cant wait!!!! so excited, I know winter would be better because i know my synths got reaaallly sticky and sweaty in summer D: but i dont flippin carrrre . i cant wait . ^____________^ cross yer fingers
Im so glad I waited till winter to start mine :)
I started my dreads two days ago during my winter break..
A: I'm not going to get all sweaty and gross
B: They'll be at least 2 weeks old when I go back to school so they wont look great but not all that bad as when I did them, either.
But so far, your videos have helped me a lot!
Luckily, it is winter and my dreads will be started in a weeks time!
I just started mine wednesday
I was 3 years in to my dread locks and had to, reluctantly and sadly, comb/cut them out so I could get a (sigh) "big girl" job. My hair is thin, shoulder length (with 2 patches of short hair from my first, original babies) but I'm going to dread again since my pre-k class was more open minded than the city I work for! Can you recommend some sites for Tam's, i love this one!
however winter time you shower in hot/warm water which is good for dreads while in the summer time you wash/shower with cold, its just that air drying is an issue when it's cold, so winter time is mostly better
Regardless of season I like to vary my shower temperature when I can. I like to use hot water for when I'm applying the soap and then to alternate it with cold water when I'm rinsing it out. The cold water helps rinse out the soap and also improves blood flow to the scalp and should help reduce dandruff.
I am so ready to get dreads. I have everything figured out and I'm really excited, but my mom won't let me do it myself/with friends. she wants me to pay for a professional to do it, but I can't find anyone who I see trustworthy in my area. I also don't have much money. I would just do it myself without her knowing but I don't know how to section it and I'm not sure if my friends would want to help anyway.
I think winter is best because of the hat wearability and if I was younger and in school I'd start the last day of school so they'd be already starting to form when school started. Btw Christian (sorry if I spelled it wrong) how many dreads did you start with? How many congoed and how many are there now. Cheers
i did mine in april
Nice hat.
I have been watching your videos (thank you!!) & had a question for you...I do have 3.5 yr old dreads. Not all of my hair is dreaded (some hair is undreaded near my neckline & I left "bangs" that are now overgrown...) & now I would like to dread some of my undreaded hair. I am hoping that the older dreads will kind of camouflage the newer ones (espec those underneath) -but what I am wondering about is how the newer & frizzier dreads will look w/the older ones...any hints on how to 'incorporate' my dreads so that they are all in harmony? Lol! Thanks so much!
I think if you've managed to go this long without the loose hair annoying you, I doubt some young dreads could be any worse.
I have a random question. I have naturally a wavy/loose curly hair type, would straightening my hair before starting my dreadlocks affect them in any way?
You totally made this video based off of my question from the last q and a vid =] lol
your sooo funny!
Can you make a video on dread thickness / what will suit u / and if you have thick dreads will it take longer for them to grow ?
My only fear about getting dreads is the shrinkage part......I have short hair atm...aboouuttt a tiny bit past the shoulders and I was gonna wait for my hair to grow back out buuuttt, I guess it would be better to start them now!
+jackinitinsandiego The shorter you start, the less noticeable the shrinkage is anyway :)
How bad are the dreadlocks when they first start out? Are they really embarassing or are most people able to deal with it?
Hello. I just made my babydreads today and they're very fuzzy... Like; its bad.. So yes, I look a lot like a homeless right now :P
You say its okay to hide the new, fuzzy dreads under a hat. Dosen't that leave them less room to move around and slow down the maturing? Sorry for dumb question, just wanna be sure ;)
And also; can you wear your brand new dreads in a ponytail without risking them ending up looking wierd? :)
+TheFlying Wombat I think they might actually mature quicker under a hat, because they are rubbing on the inside of the hat and are pressed against each other. Like when you wake up and the back of your head is all knotted from sleeping and moving while sleeping
:)
I just started mine yesterday, I only have one right now because im scared on how I will look, I used the twist and rip method and today it became super fuzzy and it looks like it is braided and it wont go away. I also cant blunt the tips of my dreadlock yet either. Wil the fuzziness and braided look eventually go away when my dreadlocks mature?
I've read that you can wash your (normal) hair with baking soda+water, but this may really dry the hair out. I'm thinking this may be good to help form dreads over time after using twist and rip, back comb etc. Is dry hair better to form dreads?
+misstinwhistle1 Some people wash their dreadlocks with only bicarb and water.... but it can be potentially damaging to the hair over the long term and I personally find it causes havoc with my scalp. I like using a "regular" dreadlock shampoo for my normal washes and saving bicarbonate just for a few deep cleans a year.
So i have JUST started my dreads today (2 out of about 30 somthing i think) using a corsey hook (sorry if i spelt that wrong i have really bad dyslexia) and my hair is quite short so any tips on how i can make my hair not look like a tellytubby reject for the next six months since i have a charity gig that i'm putting on next month and want to look okay for that
They will start to lay down once you've slept on them a few times and once you've started to wash them..... unless you crochet the roots - in which case they can continue to stick up.
Q&A: How did you convince your parents to let you get Dreadlocks?
I twisted and ripper my hair yesterday and I just wanted to know if it is a problem that they are not so tight close to the roots (about 3-4 cm away). Also when should I wash my hair? Thanks in advance, I really appreciate your videos
It doesn't matter with regards to the overall forming of the locks as even if you got them tight to the roots, they would likely loosen a lot before they matured to the root. As long as overall there are enough knots to keep it held together, it'll be fine.I would recommend waiting at least 5 days if possible. 7 is better.
isnt it good to start dreads in summer when you can swim in the ocean? I mean doesnt the salt water help them mature?
If you live somewhere where you can regularly swim in the ocean, then have at it! :)
I'm really curious are you from Scotland ? You kinda sound British (sorry this question is not about dreadlocks, but I'm really interested in getting them)
i sweat a lot more then the average person, I mean its bad lol. So do you think dreads will cause me to sweat a lot more then i already do. I'm getting dreads no matter what. but will i eventually get use to them. And when they drench with sweat is it hard to dry them ? and is there shampoo i can get to clean my dreads ?
Ian Hayes Having dreadlocks has sometimes been described as wearing a winter hat... that you can't take off. That may be a little of an exaggeration, but they are insulating. How much of an issue that will pose for you, I couldn't really say!
There are many different shampoo options available, each with slightly differing results depending on the individual - you'll need to try some out to see which you feel fits you best.
Alright thank you. My hair is already 6 inches but ima wait until winter to dread them, its way to hot right now out here in FL lol
Ian Hayes Down side of FL is the heat -> upside is you can swim in the ocean and get the salt water to help lock up the hair.
Ian Hayes I think sweat would help knot dreads. Cause my hair gets really knotted when I sweat so I feel like it would help
I am Aussie so i am going to say Summer is the best time to start dreads.. swimming in the ocean works miracles for those little fur babies!
