I always feel that people just get too intimidated by the pro scapes. They look incredible, but it is not happening in my tank. I like simple, natural stream setups. Some rocks, some driftwood, my favorite plants (crypts). And I am good. And the best thing is, you can always change it. Experimenting is fun!

I’m not a pro aqua scaper myself. The most I’ve done is put some plants in my tanks with some hard scape. So this is pretty cool to watch. Y’all were the reason why I truely got into this hobby. Keep it up!

I have to admit, when you put that huge rock in the back I was like, why are you using such a big rock in here? But, as it turned out, it looks amazing. That rock ended up looking like a cool mountain back there. And the other two just accent it more. Great job John. Ohh, I thinking you might put some White Clouds in the tank.

  • @MridulSinghMusic
    @MridulSinghMusic Před 2 lety +1

Scape's looking great John! Some tips:
Be ready to trim that rotala heavily! Rotala is a plant that tends to explode, and grow at least 6-8 inches a week in optimal conditions. I've got several varieties in a 29 gallon without any CO2, and it reaches the top EVERY WEEK lol
The Cryptocorynes won't need much care, except for a root tab (you mentioned you added Tropica's product; they work well!) every now and then once either the Stratum ages, or the crypts get huge.
Littorella is going to be relatively easy, it will spread like a grass, just don't let it get too much light since you're not adding CO2. LOL planting grasslike plants that small is a challenge, and best to do it in clumps.
The plant came out looking great! Can't wait to see what fish you add, and the bobbleheads around the tank are a great addition :) House of Tropicals is a great store, I go there quite often (in MD so it's not a long drive)!
Been a while since I commented on one of your or Lisa's videos, I've just been too busy to do so. I lurk in your weekly streams though, and occasionally (once every two or three weeks) get a chance to say hi to everyone in chat

Hi Jon I'm happy that you did the "plant scaping" today. I must be honest, I never really paid attention to live plants in aquariums~~I prefer to look at the fish. BUT--recently, I noticed myself checking out the live plants, and now , (especially since you did it) I want to "scape" my little 10 gal tank that I plan to set up soon--- yeah, I'm getting anxious wanting my bigger tank!!. So this 10 gal is going to be my fish ICU. I can't tell you how much I love your videos and all that I've learned. I'm feeling kinda brave right now. LOL. OK, I just wanted to let you know how much I get out of your videos. OH~~ and yeah, the plants and decorating came out awesome! 😂 I 'm sorry that I missed Lisa's. Hey, that awesome fish store that you're always talking about in MD., do they ship fish?? The selection of fish around here isn't very exciting. OK you all have a great night! Stay WARM~~ we have a BIG winter storm coming in with some snow accumulations, very cold temps and 50 mph wind gusts!!! The whole EAST COAST!

Such a great hobby. I started back in October of 2021 accidentally after trying to buy my mom a larger tank for her fish-bowled betta fish. I made up this little 5 gallon tank with some rocks and java fern, super basic and didn't practice any proper aquascaping skills. In December I ended up buying myself a 10 gallon tank and scaped the sh*t out of it, it's basically a dragonstone mountain off center to the right with some driftwood protruding behind it and extending across the tank to the left. Moss all over the wood, Rotalas, Crypts, Pogostemmon, and more planted around it with a large sand area across the front of the tank. It was such a fun experience and I definitely agree to the calming and focusing aspect it can provide. My mom saw my new tank and scape and she actually decided to try it on her 55 gallon community tank which up to this point had no live plants and just Petco/Petsmart decorations. I got her enough driftwood to extend across the entire tank and she's already begun wrapping it in moss. This is another part of this hobby: once people get exposed to it, it is super addictive!

When I first started in the fish keeping hobby I started with a nano tank. It was a 7.5 gallon rimless. It started out o.k but quickly turned into a green algae tank. Not knowing enough about plants at the time I had low light plants and a high light. I've gotten better since then and I mostly keep easy plants, crypts, annubias and moss. I love the hobby and your tank looks amazing!

Hey john, I’m a landscape architect and install full landscapes; I have had quite a difficult time aquascaping but as I have been into the aquarium hobby, I have seen improvements with time. I have the same aquarium and have the blue shrimp, with neon green substrate and white rocks with a brown driftwood, Anubis. Pretty cool color combo for the contrast of the blue shrimp!

Huh. I appear to have accidentally hit the lottery, because I live 20 minutes from House of Tropicals. I'm about to set up a new tank after not having one in over a decade and have been watching all the videos (including several of yours without seeing how close you are until just today!) and reading all the things in preparation for trying to plant it this time. It sounds like I might be able to get most of what I need locally, which is exciting! If you haven't yet made the trek up, I'd be delighted to try and go when y'all do.

Watching you take the same journey I took a few months ago has been fun to watch. I got back into the hobby and started off with artificial plants but soon got the itch for live plants and its been a blast ever since. Like you said, the manicuring and constant "Maybe if I move that an 1/8 of inch that way it'll look better" just makes the hobby so much more enjoyable. The calm I feel while escaping is amazing. Your humility is admired bit the tank looks great man.

Dang it, John, now I want another tank. Maybe this summer. I have had the worse luck with plants recently. The ones I've ordered online have all died so I've resorted to getting them at Petco. They are in so much trouble and I'm not sure why. The fish are happy and healthy in my 6 1/2 gallon aquarium. (4 little neons and 2 snails) but I'm sick about the plants. I would love to order from Tropica. Do they have a US distributor so shipping isn't out of my budget? It would be a dream to have their plants. Great video, love the tank and yes, do some more of those little suckers.

But, not sure if you did so, I'm commenting before watching, but root tabs are essential. Seachem FTW. I mash them up with a mortar and pestle and place smaller chunks throughout the tank, then spread dust at bottom or about 1-2 inches deep.

I would like to see a video on the tanks themselves, you did a short piece as part of new products. I see this as good tanks for MTS that you do not want to spends hours on. My one tank has a good pattern (5 minutes per day check out, a couple of water tests per week as I am famous for crashing tanks, bi weekly water changes, once a month filter).
As far as live plants, I am slowly introducing them to my 29g Betta and snail tank. Once the plants are in, a few shrimp to complete the look. I am using the type that do not anything other than gravel for substrate and are already attached to rocks, driftwood, lava rocks, etc. Find a place, put in tank, remove artificial plants, and use fertilizer with the water and filter change. Time will tell if my black thumb will come into play here.
For what to do with the cube. I said Oscars (lol) for the rectangle, so this one should have Koi.

Looks awesome! I hope we see updates of these as they mature! I had generic planted tanks growing up but when I got back into them some years ago I was in awe of the pro/competition tanks. They're beautiful but I stressed if I was getting everything right design rules wise. Then I stopped and just started experimenting to make an enjoyable home tank for the fish. My 3 planted tanks now are low tech small tanks and would be considered 'done all wrong' in terms of artistry but I enjoy them every day, the plant grow like weeds and a fair few fish/shrimp etc who are happy and healthy and most of them a few years old nowThey're beautiful but I stressed if I was getting everything right design rules wise.

Looks good. I’m about to start a planted 8 gal Hygger Horizon. Let’s see who’s plants die first🤣🤣🤣 With tabs there’s a chance they’ll make it.
Will snails be part of this?
BTW, love the Breaking Bad bobble heads 🤣

Well your aqua scaping definitely turned out quite nice! For as far as the fish I know your favorite ones are white clouds and for that small of a tank would be a perfect fish!

I guess on celestial pearl danios.
Anyway, I have always done ok with non-scaped planted aquariums, and I think it'd be safer starting with such kind of a tank. But I'd say problem is fishkeeping (and plantkeeping...) has all rules and no rules, in the sense what's on paper is apparently made to be defied by reality and practice, so it eventually might be a long chain of trial-and-error.

It turned out beautifully John. After 3 years I finally have success with my plants and I'm obsessed at this point. Lol My guess is Harlequin Rasboras.

I think that you did a great job putting in the plants. Makes us novices not feel bad when we see the experts. You did it nice a simple for all of us to observe and try to do. Excellent!!!

Hey we were just in Glen Bernie this morning! Played in Tri Annuals at The Green Room! Spent the night in Glen Bernie. So mad we left early to get back to West Virginia before the snow and didn't get to go to House Of Tropicals. They didn't open until 11:00 and we were scared to chance it and stay that long! Just maybe 🤞 we will get there soon!!

A bit off topic; I have a cycled tank with the Aquaclear power filter. I recently bought Seachem Matrix. I would greatly appreciate if you could walk me through the best way to safely add it to my filter without crashing my cycle. I have the filter media that usually comes with the Aquaclear.

That's awesome. I was just there yesterday for the 1st time and really enjoyed the place. Grabbed some pygmy corydoras! I really love the Kubotai Rasbora and those would look cool in there, however as of this weekend they didn't have any in stock. Scape looks great btw, really enjoy your videos as a new fishkeeper.

  • @joaofernandoalmeida1493

Nice job. It looks like a nice place where to start a small shrimp colony... will it be your choice?? (My first shrimp colony is almost 3 years old and keeps thriving. Blue dream Neocaridinas!)
