  • MERCEDES E300 BLUETEC SELF CHARGING HYBRID
In late 2012, due to the rising petrol prices, Mercedes launched a Diesel-hybrid verson of their executive E-Class saloon. This car was developed to combine the performance of a 6-cylinder engine, with lower running costs than even the most frugal 4-cylinder model. The result was this Hybrid E300 which has a 2.1 litre turbodiesel with an electric motor that provides additional power when needed in a seamless combination that is delivered by a silky smooth 7 speed automatic gearbox. This drivetrain creates an E-Class that has superb power, but which is also capable of over 60mpg. The low emissions also mean that tax cost is just £30 a year!
The E-Class has always been one of my favorite luxury saloons and with this engine it is even more irresistible - giving you all the luxury you expect from this marque with effortless performance and refinement. Hybrid-drive only goes to enhance the luxury on offer as this car is able to glide away silently
Finished in a gorgeous metallic silver with full black leather interior, a desirable combination which suits the E-Classes executive image perfectly and makes the car look modern and tasteful. Luxury extras include heated front seats which have electric adjustment for both their height and backrest, bluetooth telephone and audio streaming and a high-powered DAB stereo system. This model features front and rear park-distance sensors which are a useful extra if you ever park in a tight spot giving both audio and visual aid for tight maneuvers. Inside the Mercedes is pure luxury with cruise control and climate-controlled air-conditioning complete with separate controls for passenger and driver.
Combined power of this model is 228bhp - Thats 8 more than the old E320 V6 turbo-diesel engine engine. And that makes for superb performance (0-60mpg in 7.5 secs/ max 150 mph). Our 2013 car features the 7 speed 7G-Tronic transmission which offers smooth and fast changes and improves the performance of this car. The gearbox has 3 modes - comfort, sport and manual, the latter where you change gear using steering wheel mounted paddles. For most comfort mode is perfectly fine and with the car taking care of the gear changes, it is an even more relaxing and enjoyable car to drive, which cruises effortlessly and has masses of torque available for safe overtaking. The driving position is excellent, and visibility is superb. Being a Mercedes, this car oozes quality and feels as though it has been built to last. With ABS brakes and ESP stability and traction control the E-Class is not just a pretty face - it offers superb handling and roadholding which are guaranteed to please the keen driver, as well as those who want comfort and luxury. I love the small details which adorn this car. I particularly enjoyed this cars cruise control which helps provide the E-Class with the ability to cover long distances in complete relaxation - There is even a speed limiter function to help you resist temptation
I really cannot recommend this car highly enough. Not only does it look good and have a specification to die for - It is also excellent value for money. What is more, with its superb fuel economy and cheap tax, it is incredibly cheap to run. We sell a lot of prestige vehicles, but there is always something special about a Mercedes-Benz, I really cannot stress enough that this car is a shining example which is a real bargain in this price range.

Hi Pete. I drive a 3 series diesel in London. It's loud as a tractor and constant particle filter issue. How does the E300 compare? Would you recommend a diesel hybrid for city driving?

The E300 is certainly a great car but it does heavily rely on the diesel engine so its not often it is silent. TBH if you're in London it may be worth considering a petrol hybrid as that will hopefully also escape some of the ULEZ charges.

Don't the batteries on these only last between 100k to 150k which to replace that is a few grand?

If you have one that is juddering you need to get it to a workshop - They shouldn't do that.

From my experience the 2.2 diesels are very strong engines and a friend who used one as a taxi had it for over 400k miles. They are very strong indeed and at nearly 140k miles my own one still runs like a Swiss watch. Great cars.
