Aloha! 🌈 We are Alexus and Michi: PhD students and an international (Mexican American German) LGBT couple at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa, located in Honolulu, Hawaii (Oahu). Alexus is a fourth year PhD student studying Biological Oceanography (Marine Ecology, Deep-sea Biology) and Michi is a fifth year PhD student studying Second Language Studies (Applied Linguistics, Language Teaching).
In this week’s video, Alexus is sharing some tips and advice for applying to University of Hawaii at Manoa (UH Manoa) graduate school programs in the Department of Oceanography. If you are a student that is interested in studying oceanography, marine science, marine biology, marine ecology, deep sea biology, or deep sea ecology in graduate school (Masters or PhD), then this video is for you! Alexus, a current PhD student in Biological Oceanography, introduces the graduate school program at UH Manoa and the three divisions of oceanography (Biological Oceanography, Physical Oceanography, and Marine Geology and Geochemistry-Chemical Oceanography). She shares some tips on how to apply to graduate school in the US.. how to contact faculty and find funding for your graduate degree. She lists some requirements for applying, explains the UH Graduate Division application as well as the department specific application, and shares some additional graduate application resources & a mentorship program.

Hi Alexis, Thanks! Your videos inspired me to look into UNH for graduate school. I’ve been emailing professors in the UHM Oceanography Department but haven’t received the replies I hoped for. Could you tell me which faculty members are recruiting graduate students? Where can I find that information?

Oh great that you’ve emailed professors already. If you aren’t receiving replies, do make sure that you are following the steps I’ve outlined in the previous video I made on emailing and contacting professors for graduate school. I can’t say exactly which faculty members are currently looking for graduate students.. sometimes they advertise on their lab or personal websites but not always. Best way would be email in my opinion!

Is 26k stipend per year enough for an international phd student? How much tax do they deduct from the stipend?

It really depends on where you are. For Hawaii, for example, that’s pretty low but definitely doable. You may not be able to have a car (unless you split one with roommates maybe!) and you won’t be able to live by yourself, but it certainly works out! Especially if you have a side hustle and don’t eat out as much!
