AVV, such a smart rider. Used the downhill section to full advantage and the long game paid off. Snooze you loose.

Not such a proud moment that their organisation, CNZ, refused to pay the costs involved in getting more NZ riders in the races, especially given how close to home it is. Huge missed opportunity.

I thoroughly enjoyed this race (AVV is such a warrior!), but I would've paid to watch a race where she, uninjured, attacked on Mt Keira, as she said in the post-race interview she would've if it wasn't for her elbow.
Becoming WC in the circumstances she did, the way she did, hop off the bike and say that... she's a legend.

I think she played some poker throughout the race and chess in the last km. Kopecky knew that whoever chased AvV, right after all the work of catching the break, would be probably throwing away a medal in the end (she reportedly said that later). AvV just too determined, too strong, too enduring and too smart.

When you're in the final kilometers of a long, hard WC, you stop thinking straight and only focus on saving as much energy as possible to sprint and win the rainbow jersey. Not AVV though, the only one with proper brains at the end won

Nobody in the front group of 11 had the guts to push the pace or break; they were all just toodling along with 1K to go, and they let a rider from the second group--seconds back--zoom past. And there wasn't even a real response from the group for several seconds. Pretty lame.

Great win by AVV, but would you ever trust what she says? "Can't ride out of the saddle, can't sprint, will ride for teammates" in pre race interviews and yet climbing out of the saddle, sprinting to the finish out of the saddle ;)

    • @tugabooga

I guess we will never know. She is still a great rider.

It's what happens when you've got a big group (10/11 riders!) at 1 kilometer and not one of them makes a move--all riding passively--leaving the door open for Van Vleuten who wasn't even that close to the front group! Pretty lame, really.
