I don't get it from those tv shows that having the greatest artists have to force them to do lip sync.
why playback?
Practically all "live" musical performances done for TV back then were lip synched. The TV stations demanded it be done that way so there was no choice - either go along with it or don't be on the show at all. Same in Australia where I am. Only real exception being if an actual, proper concert were broadcast.

It's great footage for sure, but def miming to a track. All these countdown shows, top of the pops etc are all mimed and you can see him miss a few words here and there. No big deal, we all know he sang this live on countless live shows.
