  • "A real slow drag" from Scott Joplin's Opera "Treemonisha" performed by Houston Grand Opera Orchestra conducted by Gunther Schuller who is the arranger of 1911 Joplin's piano version. Recorded in 1975 for DG.
Performers: Dwight Ransom, Curtis Rayam, Betty Allen, Ben Harney, Willard White, Cora Johnson, Dorceal Duckens, Carmen Balthrop, Kenneth Hicks, Edward Pierson, Raymond Bazemore
    Text:
    TREEMONISHA
Salute your partner, do the drag.
Stop and move backward, do the drag.
    All of you stop.
Look to your right and do the drag.
To your left, that's the way.
(All stop, salute partners, and then march, doing the dude walk.)
    TREEMONISHA and LUCY
    Marching onward, marching onward,
    Marching to that lovely tune;
    Marching onward, marching onward,
Happy as a bird in June.
    Sliding onward, sliding onward,
    Listen to that rag.
    Hop and skip,
    Now do that Slow Drag.
    Dance slowly, prance slowly,
While you hear that pretty rag.
    Dance slowly, prance slowly,
Now you do the real Slow Drag.
    Walk slowly, talk lowly,
    TREEMONISHA, LUCY and CHORUS
    Listen to that rag.
    Hop and skip,
    Now do that Slow Drag.
    TREEMONISHA
    Move along, don't stop,
    (All Schottische)
    Don't stop dancing,
    Drag along.
    Stop!
    Move along, don't stop,
    (All Schottische)
    Don't stop dancing,
    Drag along,
    (All Slow Drag)
    Doing the real Slow Drag.
    Move along, don't stop, etc.
    TREEMONISHA, LUCY, and WOMEN
    Marching onward, marching onward, etc.
(All march, doing the dude walk.)
    EVERYONE
    Dance slowly, prance slowly,
While you hear that pretty rag.
    Dance slowly, prance slowly,
Now you do the real Slow Drag.
    Walk slowly, talk lowly,
    Listen to that rag.
    Hop and skip,
    Now do that Slow Drag.
    End of Opera.

Treemonisha is an american jewel. Should definitely be added to the Met repertoire. I discovered it at 19 and have been in love with it since then.

Yes, underrated. Saw a live production in Denver. No sets. Joplin: too Black for the Whites, too White for the Blacks. He's still broke!

I am organizing a concert of African American music for February 2022, and this would be the perfect closer for the first half. So lyrical, hopeful and moving!

I guess dancing is pretty profound. But the actual opera has a pretty good story though.

@@kingsbishop1479his 1916 “symphony No.1” has been lost (and was last seen) since 1962, it hasn’t yet surfaced and it’s whereabouts are still unknown. Same goes for hundreds of other pages of manuscripts, including his last piece ever, 1917’s “Piano Concerto no.1”.
Hopefully they’ll all be found someday.

Its a shame that the Met has. Never staged Treemonisha while most of the Operas they Do perform are not even half as good thats why the Met has to beg for money they must be insane or maybe flat out Rascists ??? Treenmonisha has very beautiful strong melodies from start to finish

It took the Met 30 years to stage an all Black version of Porgy and Bess in 2019. It sold out. I was one of the fortunate in the audience. Lincoln Square was filled with enchantment the entire evening. I've seen Tremonisha staged by Cincinnati Opera. It was divine. Why don't we ask the Met to stage Tremonisha as the opening night attraction in 2025. Shouldn't that give all parties time to "Step up to the moment" with this grand American Opera?

    • @PJGRAND
      @PJGRAND Před rokem +2

I feel that Joplin's treemonisha is extremely underrated I do feel that the met will most likely stage at one day what are the big American offer is there to revive? And the fact that it took the met gala 2019 to use an all-black cast of porgy and Bess unfortunately shows that racism is penetrate the world of opera still I'm very sad situation for sure
