These are no joke aircraft. They have fully upgraded light fighter air combat systems. Its easier to train someone for these then a f-18 jet fighter. Plus these planes can be used to train the pilots to jet fighters in the future. And its more simple to keep running then a f-18 or combat jet fighter.

+SwissCheeseOnaPlate Here in Brazil we use the A-27 in the last 40 years, and now the EMB 314 Super Tucano or most know A-29, is the pinnacle of military turboprop aircraft, most modernized than the majority of modern jet fighters, the operational cost to hour flying it's less than 500US$, because that we use him against Insurgency since 1980 with A-27/EMB 312 Tucano, and now with the newest A-29/EMB 314 Super Tucano...
I really don't see nothing similar in the PC-21 and A-29, the American T-6 are the same of PC-21, the A-27 and A-29 are indigenous Brazilian project...

Well, it's more stealthy than an F-35, because it's Carbon Fibre and Turboprop, so it's Radar Signature and Heat Signature and are minimal and because it's very quiet it get's the Surprise Advantage, even over Helicopters. So Rockets have a very hard time locking on and the Enemy on the Ground can't hear it.
It is more economical, which means that it can spend more time in the Air than an A-10 and support the Troops for longer.
If the Airfield has limited Fuel, the Jets will have to spend a lot of time waiting for Fuel, while these little Buggers just fly and support their guys all the time.
It is very easy to repair. If an F-16 has a little Bullethole it takes a couple of days to repair.
The Super Stukano can be repaired in a couple of hours and fly again to help the Soldiers on the Ground again.
It's easy to fly, so even Pilots who can't fly Jets still can fly these. It's less dangerous and less prone to Crashes.
It's cheap, so instead of one F-15 that can fly 2 Hours per day between Maintenance you can have 20+ Super Stukanos flying 8 Hours per day each. And the Stukano can load 1.6 tons of Bombs while the F-16 and other American Fighters can take 2.5 tons.
So you can have 1 American Fighter flying 2-3 very dangerous Sorties with tons of Rockets and AA pointing at them, per day delivering 5 to 7.5 Tons of Ordonance or 20 Super Stukanos flying 8 to 10 Sorties per day each, virtually undetectable, quiet and stealthy, delivering 280 to 320 tons of Bombs to the Enemy FOR THE SAME MONEY.
So for the Afghan Airforce the Super Stukano is the right Choice. The Taliban won't even know what hit them.

The Wikipedia article on the Embraer EMB 314 Super Tucano gives the history of the USAF evaluating the aircraft for special ops. That's how it obtained the USA designation A-29. But it seems there were various problems (politics) with the procurement contract until someone decided the USAF should buy some and train Afghan pilots to fly them. Note that the USAF also has many unmanned aircraft (drones) with similar performance, loiter capability, and weapons for attacking ground targets, or for spotting targets for larger manned aircraft to take out.

Man those look like they came straight out of WWII. They're probably good for close air support roles and taking out ground targets though. These are old trainer aircraft I think. Did they put weapons on them? Later on when Afghanistan is ready and after more training 'm sure they will be provided some jet aircraft; the Afghan government was looking at getting some a few years back so they can defend their air space effectively so their neighbors don't just claim an area and start flying over and destroying Afghan troops.

Piper developed the PA-48 Enforcer, which is a Turboprop P-51 with extended Wings intened as a Skyraider Replacement.
There was no interest back then so the Project was discontinued.
The Advantage of the Super Stukano is it's Carbo Fibre Construction which gives it a far smaller Radar Signature than Aluminium and makes it very stealthy, more so than the F-35 surprisingly enough.

    • @alexandrejosedacostaneto381
      @alexandrejosedacostaneto381 Před 5 lety +1

Because the Super Tucano actually has very advanced avionics and weapons systems. It's built to be easy to fly, cheap to manufacture, easy to repair with cheap maintanence costs. Sure, it's not going to dogfight or provide the same sort of aircover that a Warthog A-10 can, but it's not meant to do that. Flight hours of the A-10 are expensive as fuck, they were designed to target massive Soviet armored formations, not fight dirty guerilla wars like the Super Tucano. Using a more powerful aircraft here would be like using a pistol to kill a roach. Sure, you are going to kill it, but it's ridiculous overkill when you can just use a more adequate tool for the job. Hell, even the pilot training for the Super Tucano is much easier and much more cheaper, which is exactly what the Afghan Air Force needs, since it's fighting a guerrilla war and not a international conflict against another nation-state

These planes probably cost between $150,000 and $200,000 new. I highly doubt Afghanistan is being charged for them though. The US has built up multiple military bases and are just giving them to the Afghan government. The same with most weapons and vehicles. A country that makes over $80,000,000 in emerald sales alone with the small portion of mines the Afghan government actually controls wouldn't have a problem paying for these 4 planes if they wanted to. These have probably been given to Afghanistan though because they are the first type of planes pilots trained by the US are trained in if they are going to be fighter pilots, then they are trained to fly jets in a trainer jet the US likes to use. One must learn to crawl before they can walk and must learn to walk before it can run. One step at a time, Afghanistan hasn't really had much of an air force since the Russian invasion; there were some old Russian aircraft in the 90s at air bases that used to be used by the Russians, most were no longer operable and there was a lack of pilots. Any Afghan pilot that actually knew how to fly probably fled when the Americans came or were shot down if they tried attacking. The country has pretty much been at war since the 1970s though, some locals didn't even realize the Russians were pushed out, they thought the Americans were Russians and that they had simply been pushed back for a little while. The war between the Northern Alliance and the Taliban began shortly after the Russians were pushed out; a lot has been lost in Afghanistan over the years; I feel bad for the people personally and I am honored to have been able to help them as best I could. Under the Taliban the culture and traditions of Afghanistan was suppressed worse than the Russians ever did and a lot of ancient sites were destroyed; the Taliban also waged a war on art and science as they forced a very strict theocracy on the people. They are all Muslim but they don't want things like music, dancing, singing, art, technology, science, etc banned from their country. They don't want to be influenced or occupied by non Afghans but at the same time the people don't really want to live in mud huts without power and move rocks around to water plants their whole life and some would like to make Afghanistan into a country that competes and contributes on a global scale. Their culture and traditions are re-emerging, the government is planning on revitalizing Afghanistan's tourist industry; many people used to come to see the ancient site, unique beauty, and rare animals found in Afghanistan and enjoy the really unique culture. The country also used to have quite the night life I hear and was known as a place to party and have fun throughout the world. We used to even joke that they could set up a ski resort in the Bamiyan and Parwan districts (provided they could ever get rid of all the mines left behind by the Russians). Bamiyan apparently had less explosives, I think that's where the giant Buddhas used to stand, I heard the Germans were trying to help the Afghans put them back together like big puzzles and trying to help them find a legendary ancient city in that valley as well as help them dig up a legendary ancient temple that had an even bigger Buddha that was laying on it's side called a sleeping Buddha. The people of Bamiyan look forward to revitalizing the tourist industry; apparently the Bamiyan valley was once one of the worlds top vacation spots before 1978.

Don't comment if you don't understand military aircraft and conflict. The a-29 is perfect for the mountains and taliban because it can loiter longer than a jet, it costs less, and it can still carry laser guided weapons. The Afghans don't need to fly a fighter jet since the Taliban have 0 planes on nunbskull!!! Its a Brazilian plane and even the Colombia uses it to fight drug runners because it can fly around slower spotting enemies. This aircraft serves the same purpose as the A-10 but obviously not as lethal. Plenty of lethality for the Afghan air force combined with ground forces, tanks, attack helicopters, etc. What plane should we give them an f-16? f-15? a-10? They only need an aircraft to attack ground forces and the a-29 is pretty much perfect for their mission so again do research before you comment and look stupid.

+R.Mariano As I see your are not able to understand my words here because it is not bothers you whatever is happening now in Afghanistan . Now to the point.
First: As we have seen during the invasion of Soviets the government forces was better equipped than now. They had more than hundreds of fighter jets, and pilots but they loose the war. What Usa is delivering now after al what happened and after thousands Afghan soldiers killed just some outdated planes.
You can't campare the circumstances between Brazil and Afghanistan, geograpcally and politically, as we see Usa in syria provided on terrorist The TOW rockets. There is no doubt about IT TO SEE THIS ARMS IN BY ISIS in Afghanistan. Because everyone know usa playing game with both sides (as the did during the war of Iran and Iraq)
IF THEY USE THIS A29 Rekshas to deal with drugs than it will be ok, but dilver this for the police and for the army.
Afghanistan is still nomber one in production of drugs after 13 years of invasion.

+propan_butan This is actually a much more efficient and effective weapons platform for what we in the military call "low intensity conflict". Perfect for precision strikes, these aircraft can fly slow enough to be great gun and rocket platforms while having enough top end speed to keep up with some jets. These could make a good replacement for the A-10 when they day comes to retire them. Oh and btw - this turbofan aircraft would kick a ME-109 or any other WW2 aircraft's butt all over the sky.

+propan_butan - the A-29 designation for the made-in-Brazil Super Tucano is from the US Military which has evaluated the aircraft for special operations since 2009 according to Wikipedia. There are many weapons which can have a very long service life - such as the Browning 50 cal machine gun, in widespread use since before WWII - because they do a particular job well. When the B-52 heavy bomber retires from service, perhaps around the middle of this century, it will have been in service for almost 100 years.
