That's the reason ;) We have well isolated houses to hold in the heat in winter and hold out the heat in summer. But that also means that unlike with american wooden houses there is not a constant moisture exchange between the inside and the outside. And HUMANS produce moisture. That's also why we only do this for some minutes per day at most - because it's not about getting fresh air in - it's about getting moisture out.

I was just reading it’s so popular in Germany it’s now being cited as a major problem for Berlin meeting their energy reduction targets, because people keep opening the windows and letting the heat out. Edit: wow this triggered a lot of people lol. To be clear I’m just reporting what the city said go take it up with them. What was interesting was that researchers found that whilst a lot of people say they open their windows for a few minutes several times a day, in practice most of them just crack the windows a little bit for a long time, which is obviously very inefficient. But I will say to the people who replied saying you can exchange the warm inside air with the cold outside air without a reduction in temperature: are you sure you don’t want to have another go at that answer?
@@Bobby-wn5yrWell, as with all German habits, there is a right way to do it and a wrong way. Right way is Stoßlüften it in the morning and then heating up your place for the day before turning the heat back down for the night.

I don't even live in Germany and I always have my windows open in the winter time. I love it super cold. Everyone else freezes in my house but that's just the way it is. 😂
In fact what happens in Canada when you open a window in the winter is your father from two provinces over drives all night just to yell at you for heating the entire neighbourhood.😊
That's why it's called "Stoßlüften". You basically let in the fresh air only for 2-4 minutes so that the walls and furniture don't cool down and when you close the windows they release heat and the air immediately starts warming up. This is German efficiency at it's finest if you ask me😂👌
Our dads do that, too. But only when we forgot to switch off the radiators that typically are located directly under the windows. And they refer to the neighborhood, too! Nachbarschaft.
My dad would personally come and yell at you. He literally gave me shit for keeping my window open in my university dorm where I don't even pay for heating I go to university 6 hours away from home he saw it while it was FaceTiming him for like half a second

Don't forget the cold Winter/Weihnachtsbier😉
Me reading this while having a Popsicle at 4.30 am with my windows open, in the Rocky mountains in December😂 gotta live those German genes
This is a habit I picked up from living in Germany. It really does help to get rid of stuffy, negative air.

@Bobby-wn5yr yes but what you describe is not real "lüften"

As someone from Michigan, I know most of Germany never gets as cold as that part of North America. Yet we all still open our windows for a few to get that fresh air in the house still. 🥰
@@rebeccamd7903 from everything I can find online Germany is colder than Michigan. Germany is higher further north than the most the US so it makes sense for Germany to be colder

Yes, the way our houses are built, they are very susceptible to mold. That’s why German Liam eyed the condensation on the windows
@@velkymuftu Yes, I got that, but it would seem that this is intrinsically connected, for both New Englanders and Germans, to the fact that we can bear AND enjoy airing the house even in the coldest months of winter. We don't huddle in the corner with coats on, counting down the time until we can end the daily house airing. The fresh air, in fact, never feels as cleansing or full of life as in winter.
