Information about the Henna Cafe (Strange Cafe) and Robot Barista:
Created by the HIS travel agency, and located in their Shibuya office within the Modi Building.

The Robot's name is Sawyer (But calls himself, Tom... Get it?)
Have you ever had a Robot serve you food?
Leave it below!
Tokyo Lens no. Just vending machines
Tokyo Lens Nope, never but that would be awesome 😆
Not food no. But I have seen Honda's Asimo run, live and in person.
Does the Frosty the Snowman Snow Cone Maker count? Kinda looks like a scary robot, but you have to do most of the work :(

"Have you ever had a Robot serve you food? ",
Nope not yet ^_^
By any chance that robotic arm is from Boston Robotics?
It’s little face is adorable
That WAS fun. Though I kinda hoped I would get to see the robot make a latte or cappuccino.
There’s really always so much new stuff popping up in Tokyo, it’s amazing :D never gets boring. Thanks for showing us this! :)
We had one of these in San Francisco and I guess it broke down shortly after its debut. :( Barista life can be a challenge, little robot. Stay strong out there in Japan.
I can imagine this at McDonald's.
so cool! i feel like tokyo always has so many new things to look forward to when i visit
hi norm,, only in japan comes to mind !! amazing
Another amazing video! Keep pumping out the quality content!
That's such a creative way to use technology. I showed my partner the video, as he works as an engineer and got a kick out of it!
I am so glad I found your channel your so kind and positive you put so much effort into your videos too
THIS IS SO COOL.
Totally worth seeing it in person!
Hey Norm! Thank you for being so awesome! You have inspired me to start vlogging my love of Japanese culture/pop culture! Hope to make it over there in less than a year!
It's crazy that that robot was made here in the states, yet we don't have them.... Would LOVE to see these things! Much love from Arizona ❤️❤️
I've never had a robot serve me food, but it looks like fun to me! I'd drink coffee from Sawyer, but, then again, I'd drink most coffee because I'm addicted to it. :) The only sad thing is that it opens at 11 am, but I might be jet lagged, so maybe that'd be a good thing.
This seems very cool :)
Always nice to start my day with one of your videos! Learning about interesting places to add to my list when I come to Japan one day is great! Hope you have a good week!
That’s so cool ! I like how it’s in the HIS area and that’s the group that I did my Hokkaido tour with , definitely a good time !
Amazing!!! You are he BEST TOKYO CZcamsR! Thannnk you!
Thank you for the high quality video.
I had a radio shack robot arm similar to that in design that I didn’t really love at first. Then a few years later I discovered a new movement feature with the controls and totally fell back in love with it. Lol!!!
I'm gonna share this one. I think even my friends not as into Japan as me can still appreciate this :)
The robot reminds me of a X-Files recent episode, where Scully and Mulder served sushi by robot chef.
But I prefer human barrista coz they can make costumized order lol 😄😄😄
So awesome!
My first Tokyo Tuesday... on a Tuesday (not like normal whocj for me is a Monday), and in Toyko... well on bullet train headed south, but I'll be back tomorrow.
THATS AWESOME!!
Pretty pumped!!
I get my on Monday
That’s cute 😂 I’ll be sure to check it out next time around!
I love the dichotomy of technology in Japan. I read last week about a robot that helps stock combini shelves yet the government still uses floppy disks and fax machines.
That is an awesome café. I love cafes. I hope I will have a chance to visit that place someday.
Wow you just keep showing me how amazing you are. Thank YOU!!!!!🎊🎉
Japan is literally an alternate universe and I love it. Now if it can make customized and complicated drinks like the baristas at Starbucks, then we’re in trouble.
So cool!!
I'd like Sawyer in my house. I'd re-program it to make me breakfast, coffee, do laundry, clean my car, clean the floors, bathrooms, and then in the evening help me with sushi. Rest of the day it can play with my cats.
That robot is quite the showman. We in Tokyo in early July. If we see this guy we'll tell him Norm sent us 😉
Good coffee with a great show 😄 that seems like the perfect afternoon pick me up!
The noise of the arm would definitely be a little grating over time, but this is definitely a really neat little concept for a cafe
Wow that looked fun!!!
The Prater in Vienna have a "rollercoaster bar" where robots like these make your cocktail and food, and put it on a mini-rollercoaster system, so it will slide to your table. But I never had coffee made by a robit, so I'll put this place on my must-see list! Thanks! ^^
please go back for a quick visit and get something more complex. this is super cool!
Watching this is like an episode of "How It's Made". Watching Adventure.
Notification squaaad 😆
That's my HQ office... Yaay! Thank you for mentioning it..
A robot serving me food is one thing I still have to experience BUT I have watched several robots make art 🤣🎨👩🏻🎨
Great vlog, cool concept.... But i think I would still prefer someone making my coffee in less time... JMO.... Off to Asakusa today...what you up today Norm?
Why that's not a real robot...and I thought you wanted to keep it real!
Love it!! I so want some coffee made by a robot! Does it make lattes, macchiatos etc too?
Most people are like robots until they have had their morning coffee :D
@Tokyo Lens You really have that Peter Mckinnon vibe! It really reminds me of peter mckinnon. It would be awesome if the 2 of you collab in japan. Thats would be epic!
I would try Sawyer's coffee, and Norm you always find the coolest stuff to share. 👍🍵🍵👍
So CZcams paired this with an ad for exoskeletons that can assist various people to help them walk. Interesting.
So...watch out Starbucks!
How interesting your vlog! I'm japanese but I didn't know such a funny thing.
Never had a robot serve me food! Must have been an interesting experience!
かっこいい と おもしろい!
Just when you think you've seen it all...a robot serves you coffee
Japanese Robot Hipster Baristas. Oh goody. Does it have an Art degree and use a record player in its spare time? 😛
Mike Smith LOL
*Screams* THAT ROBOT IS SO CUTE! That little backstory on it is great. x'D It can make any drinks, yes? Not just the drip coffee? Was the coffee good? xD
Pretty cool but also pretty scary. I think I would go there once and never again.
I, for one, welcome our new pour over coffee robot overlords to planet Earth.
I think this is really cool... but all of Japan's robot resturants now remind me of the newer X-File's episode regarding a robot sushi restaurant. Haha.
Awesome! Do they have an english menu? My japanese is not quite there hehehe
That's so clever .
It's finally in Poland as well, we've got at least 2 of them placed around Warsaw Central Station. They are fully autonomic so you don't even need to give him a cup, just pay and press the right button 😄 also, it's smaller as well and it's not dancing :c
Watched ✈🇯🇵
I have definitely had a few waiters serving me that were like robots. As normal, enough reason for me to plan my second trip.
The robot arm from the Iron Man movies I think is called dummy because he does a lot of mistakes, but I would test Soya out that's fascinating :)
Who restocks the coffee cups and all the other stuff it needs when it runs out
Yeah 😆 hype me up for Japan more 😉😂
I want one of these in my house haha!
This is super neat, I wish that the U.S. would do more stuff like this. I wonder if they malfunction what you do though. Do you just lose your money like at a vending machine?
There are staff nearby.
Mind you... I would be truly terrified of this malfunctioning lol
Tokyo Lens haha I can imagine funky arm movements and hot coffee everywhere. Scary.
ha! I know this HIS. They have an awesome bag storage service for $5 a day. I use it all the time :)
Woah, robot coffee man! How many different coffees is he programmed to make? :)
Oh man, Sawyer is such a cutie! Maybe I'll learn to introduce myself like that XD PRobably overly friendly?
Yay, robots.
It's sort of neat that it actually has a more retro robotics feel as opposed to anything that even tries to be realistic or human (visually, at least). That noise would get so annoying though. It must be terrible for the staff members that have to work within earshot of it.
Japan should have a robotic Kaiju or other Tokusatsu creature to make coffee and food etc.
For any of those watching this or reading the comments, looks like Hen-Na Cafe is still open in 2023. What will I ever do with my coffee addiction in Japan I wonder....
✌️❤️
Aloha Norm,
Way too cool! I would like a robot at my home. I need one for coffee /(kohi?) and dishes! (Kohi ikimasho ka? )( Trips to Japan about $600 round trip from/to Hawaii booking right now.)
We had a clear day then rain here. I was at the hospital for much of it. Doing better. Addie the wonder dog is doing better too. she hurt her back jumping off the bed during one of our many Earthquakes. Now I really know why we have no water beds in Hilo, Hawaii. 1. Too heavy for a lot of the construction. 2. Sea sick from Earthquakes! We have had up to about 500 a day. most oof them little.
How does Japan handle Eartquakes? and preparedness?
Have there been improvements since Fukushima /Tohuku Earthquakes and Tsunami? After the false N.Korea missle launch warning in January, I realized the plan lately here is to shelter in place and really no plan. The current volcano evacuation people, many are in parking lots near the eruption area in tents on asphalt. It is a mess! And we needed at least N95 masks for ash, and baking soda for the acid rain on everything. Many people here have rain water catchment. All of that needs lowered ph. Does the eruptions on other parts of Japan affect the quality of life where you are living?
Fun idea, you could use a robot to carry your camera. How is the new gimble working out?
I'm hoping to get better. I would love to see Japan some day.
I ordered a print from you red bubble thing. :)
Can't wait. Take care, Talk later. Ja mata.
Kai Bolton Strom
Cool Tom Sawyer~
the future is scary! :P
This is nothing. Wait until you listen the a talk by Masayoshi Son, SoftBank's CEO and founder.
Exit the warrior, today's Tom Saw-yee?
Now if it had been one of those creepy super realistic android type robots...😁 I wonder where the ceiling is for these things? There is a definite social position for robot use. Not going to find any in Omoide yococho and similar food and drink alleys, will never appear in Kikko or The Inperial Hotel and the like. Just in the middle 😂
thumbs up ^_^
That’s one way to deal with a labour shortage. That shortage is here now.
Hey have you ever had turkish coffee ?
I find it interesting, but overkill hahaha
Do you know what company makes the robot? It looks like some of the stuff my company sells.
Do the pancake machines at the hotel buffet count? 😂
Only a 4:29 Tokyo Lens Tokyo Tuesday video ? I feel robbed of Tokyo content of my Tuesday here in Tokyo!
TokyoJoVlogs Download it and play it back at 50%😜 Give Norm a break😉 You wouldn't catch me editing til 4 on the morning😂 PS how are you fixed for the 14th?
Simon の茶の間 well, the 14th is a Thursday, not the greatest day for me. Fri,Saturday would be better lol
This is what happens when Mcemployees ask for $15 an hour.
I wanted half foam!! Can I speak to the manage?
Call me crazy, but I'd rather have service from a human being! It's like more and more food places have the self service ports and check outs. I still go to a counter with a person. I prefer a personal touch.
So cool to watch, but why only one arm? Wouldn't it be more productive to have 2 arms?
Sorry I'm late, so how y'all guy's doin'?
Idk I feel that I would have a difficult time getting one of these coffee because I am the kind to overly edit how I take my coffee 😨
I think that particular robot is a bit creepy... some of the others look much cuter! What happens if someone tries to rob the cafe? I realize Japan has a low crime rate.. but it can still happen. Are there humans on site..or can that arm swing and knock someone out? LOL
Cafe X has had a robot barista unit since late 2016 or early 2017 not really sure the exact date it went online and it can make quite a variety of coffee beverages and automatic brewers have been around for quite a long time before that. I remember a completely automated brewer that was designed for high volume brewing that came out much earlier and it used a conveyor system and a series of electronic eyes to mix several variations of coffee beverages as they went down the line in a nearly continuous flow based on the order being entered.
why robots?? coffee made by a coffee machine is absolutely more tasteful.....
COMMENT 100 💯
If it was British, he'd be called Barry Star....😀
fun stuff. it's an American
