She got excellent balance. Her routines seems simple, delicate, and nimble, but her executions were flawless, flowing, and full of confidence. Amazing gymnast that's truly legendary.
I was just a young girl when I saw her movie and I was taken by her 44 years ago I was born in 7 came to know of her when I was about 8 years old and she is the reason I fell in love with gymnastics with the movie I watched I understood all the trials and tribulations that she went through and what brought me in so hard was her I'm denying love for the sport. She was a beast and there wasn't anybody who could come close to her.
These routines showed just how important compulsories were: a basic knowledge of the basics is so necessary. All of Nadia's elements were executed with maximum extension and amplitude, and she has, in my opinion, the best back handsprings on beam ever. Although her optional routine wasnt as difficult as some of the others, in those days, execution and form mattered, and her execution and form was flawless.
I don’t think i’ve ever seen a balance routine with an actual pirouette into an arabesque and a penchè. Gymnastics was really at a different stage than it is now. There was a lot more artistry and dance in gymnastics before. Now, the skill cap has raised tremendously and strength is valued more than elegance.
Routines today aren't more difficult. The floor is springier today than in Nadia's era which makes tumbling easier. The unever bars are further apart which has changed the whole technicality of the routines. The beams have changed from wood to softer suede covered surfaces that are less slippery. What Nadia did on the equipment of her era is if anything more impressive than what gymnasts to today on their far more forgiving equipment.
could not agree more. if you think about it...this was 30 YEARS ago. and I have yet to see someone perform as fluidly and as confidently and as flawelssly on the beam--the most difficult event. no one has been better IMO. tell me the last time you have seen an aerial cartwheel back-handspring on the beam. never.
Nadia is soooooooooo good, she makes it simple like it easy, but it not, she doing things that gymnastics of today try to do. If you watch carefully, the things she does is no way EASY. She dances on the beam.

nadia has always been my favorite gymnast. ever. it's very apparent here in her beam work. i still don't think anyone today is as fluid, as solid, or as poised as nadia was. i think as she got older she was even better. more poised, elegant, and just as smooth as butter. and of course perfect. still my favorite to watch after 30 years. awesome and i'm sure she's inspired miillions of people all over the world. her commitment to doing amazing things was astounding
So much peace, the love is in the air!Her body has such an atletic expression, beautiful proportiones ..she is so majestic, natural and elegant! You can make therapy watching her moves.Adorable!
NADIA bola charizmatická, veľmi talentovaná a vynikajúca v tvrdej svetovej konkurencii. Pred rozdelením Československa som niekoľko rokov sledovala všetky dostupné gymnastické športové prenosy 😍NADIA was charismatic, very talented and excellent in tough world-class competition. Before the division of Czechoslovakia, I watched all available gymnastic sports broadcasts for several years...
joseph johnson First, this is a compulsory exercise. And the design of the beam as we know today by far favors difficult elements next to the primitive beam from Nadia's day when the beam was essentially naked wood while today's beam is patted and leather/suede. I do not believe anyone can do a standing back tuck 1/1 on the wooden beam from Nadia's days.
Vette gaddia You must not have watched the entire video. Nadia's compulsory beam exercise is shown, as well as her optional beam exercise (not sure if it is team or all-around) and event finals. The beam may have changed, but there is no doubt that today's gymnasts continue to push boundaries in terms of difficulty. I'd rather see beautifully executed simpler skills, than chucked but difficult ones.
***** Angie, artistry is declining so fast in this sport. But, what kills me is that the gymnasts with good execution are not rewarded enough for straight arms, glued legs, pointed toes. It seems it is worth it these days to chuck skills because the sloppy gymnasts still get good scores.
***** Douglas gets super amplitude on UB. That's why the judges love her. I agree they should reward the gymnasts with extension and form and deduct from those who lack it. They reward Biles for super amplitude on FX. But do not seem to deduct her for having lower amplitude on UB. I have to say Biles is improving on that deficit, though.
I totally understand why people think that it's weird that she got a 10 on various routines that appear extremely simple compared to those of Nastia Liukin and Aliya Mustafina, and etc, however, you guys need to remember that regardless of the difficulty, compared to those who competed with her, Nadia was the best. She performed the best routines and she did them well so at the time, what she did was impressive and 100% deserved the score she got. Would she be able to win gold medals if she was a teenager during the 2010s? We dont know. What we do know is that she was able to do so in the 70s/80s, and we also know that gymnastics has evolved and shouldn't compare because it wouldn't be fair to any of the olympians.
I think that people have also forgotten that equipment was different in 1976. For example, back then, the tumbling floor was just that - a floor. No springs. Doing the tumbling passes that Nadia did, and doing them off a "dead" floor, requires a strength that I doubt today's gymnasts could duplicate. The springboards in vault were the old fashioned type, and they also used the old vaulting horse, not the modern vaulting table. I think that if Nadia was around today, she would absolutely be able to compete.
ChooseYour Poison I agree with that. The equipment was very different. And besides all gymnastics is today is a power sport. There aren't that many gymnasts who are graceful in their routines. The fact that Nadia lands lightly on the beam says something. That is not how things are done now. Gymnasts have now have a better advantage because their equipment is better.
The sport has not evolves. It became a series of tricks, acrobatics and long stops to prepare the next trick. Movements are not fluid and there is a lot of hand moviments. It is ugly and boring
All I can say is the compulsory routine is stunning. The fluid pace, the lines, the hands (exquisite), the form, technique and the gorgeous pirouette! Wow. Nadia is the best beam worker ever. As Bela said ...she had an amazing ability to perform under pressure, and the beam has got to be the most high pressure apparatus in a major competition. Go Nadia! It's hard for me to believe she lost 1980 Olympic all around by .05 (5 one hundredths of a point).
utoob9999 The 1980 games was one of the most controversial games ever. Her score 9.95 flashed for a few seconds before it went blank. A group of people came to the judging table and they had to stop the games to finalize her score. It took nearly half an hour. It was a huge example of soviet influence and a highlight of the Cold War in my opinion
Her leaps do actually hit splits, from a different angle you can see that. The leaps didnt have to be over 180 degrees splits though. If you look at Nadia's 1979 European Championships beam routines you will see her split leaps were actually perfect.
When I was younger, our primary school (in Romania) was gymnastics oriented, we had all the apparatus for gymnastics. I remember I tried once to get onto that damn bar, with no success lol. I grew up super fast, and by 3rd grade I started playing basketball with the 5th graders.
Her tumbling series are so graceful in the air, thats how you win in the meet, moves like that, making it look easy, again anywhere were Nadia compete she well win some kind of title
I'd include Teodora Ungureanu, Natalia Shaposhnikova, the late Yelena Mukhina, Daniela Silivas, Aurelia Dobre, Yang Bo, and Kui Yuan Yuan to name a few truly gifted beamers.
People say that the routine are more difficult today then they were years ago. I have to disagree, yeah the do more things are the balance beam, a lot of them get unbalance, and don't have that grace Nadia has. She did a simple spin and didn't stubble a bit, where Gymnastics today, would do the same thing and get unbalance. I think she had more sticker training and then most gymnastics today have.
I dont know a thing about gymnastics. All I can say it that it impresses me very much. I just wanted to point that even if routines are harder today, her balance is stunning. Looking at her you forget she s standing on this bean where ones two feet dont fit... Am I right in saying that i havent seen any other gymnast with such a great natural balance?
Esta atleta al pasar los años ha sido insuperable en la viga de equilibrio realmente parece q nació arriba de ella te recordamos con gran cariño 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Not to mention that they also had to learn a whole set of routines called compulsories. Most of today's top gymnasts wouldn't survive those deceptively 'easy' but exacting compulsories.

Some real classy comments below. RandalynFaith is right, gymnastics is gymnastics and all these girls work hard and do amazing things.
@jhar26 agreed. I think it evens out in the end, she was impressive b/c of the type of material she was given to work with, but if our gymnasts today had the same type of materials and did the same type of jumps and such as they do today, would it be possible? I think it's also b/c nadia trained on this stuff.
@tranvozcaya Thats right: gym today is just that: "stunts". What happened to grace and precision of movement??? Todays gymnasts struggle with a full turn on beam, most of them cant manage that without wobbling all over the place. Gymnastics was never meant to be "stunts". Thats why gymnasts like Nadia spent a lot of time at the ballet bar; look how beautiful, light, precise and elegant her moves are. Some of todays gymnasts sound like canal horses on the beam.
you can't really compare, because gymnastics today require higher difficulty and therefore more mistakes. Nadia and 2012 gymnasts are different generations, who's to say nadia would blow the world today if she was of this current era?

The QUEEN of gymnastics
I absolutely love this "old" style of gymnastics. It's simple but beautiful and intreaging...
I agree! For all the twists and flips, I find today’s gymnastics a little boring.
Yes, today's gymnastics is boring. All flips and acrobatics.
she connects the aerial walkover and aerial cartwheel even better than the gymnasts today!!

She's probably the worlds' best gymnast.
These routines are more graceful than what we have today.
Ballet on the beam, graceful, figurative, beautiful
She’s the best no one even today has that grace and elegance no one!
Agree.
Agree totally. As the current expression goes, she is the GOAT.
One of the most iconic gymnasts of all time.
Her dismounts are always flawless
