This has helped me think of things that I can buy for me to help deal with life. I have the earmuffs and they work amazing but being 33 I feel very awkward wearing them. But at this point I don't care because everything can get so overwhelming at times and they help me to do little tasks that I normally wouldn't be able to do. And you have given me ideas of what to buy with other sensory issues.

You're an inspiration!! So many self soothing behaviours are repressed due to adults telling us to stop, which is totally nuts! Unless someone is harming themselves we should all be allowed and encourage to self soothe. I used to suck my thumb and it was and is the only thing that will calm me. Family members were constantly telling me to stop, that I was a being a baby. I finally kicked the habit, out of force, when I was 16; due to having to wear a dental apparatus for so long. However in high, high meltdown, stress moments I have found myself curled up in a ball sucking my thumb and rubbing my blanket on my nose.
Don't know if I'm autistic, although I highly suspect it now, so am currently trying to figure out what would help me manage my daily anxiety best. I'm a stay at home mom of two under two and the noise is definitely a killer in my home! 😂🙈 Also am thinking I might enjoy some weighted blankets or lap pads. My daughter is nearing on two and exhibits certain behaviours that remind me of myself as a child. She enjoys sitting with a cushion on her, often and so I'm thinking of getting her a lap pad; whether or not she's on the spectrum, like I say, self soothing should be encouraged and accepted! No one cares if someone twiddled with their hair or bites their nails. It's all about perception.
    💕

Natural Vegan Mom I kicked the nail biting habit to start chewing on my hair. Found out about chewy stuff and bought one. Unwrapped it about 5 hours ago and love it already. Never heard of chewy jewellery before last month but currently wishing I’d heard of it 2 decades ago! I totally agree though. Forcing children to stop when it’s not harmful to themselves or others, like rocking, is just mean. Good for you accepting your kid/s as they are.

To keep the ball from rolling around, you can buy or make a tube such as those used to stop drafts under doors (I got one from a hardware store for about $8 US), then sew it into a ring and place it on the floor with the ball on top. Voila!

Airwaves chewing gum is my favourite all occasion sensory thing. Also, I find myself fiddling with the volume control switch on my iPhone way too often as i like the way it buzzes.

I wish I had ear defenders for college.. I have extremely sensitive hearing, and I can't stand slamming doors, popping binder rings, bumping backpacks and books being dropped, and roaring vehicle engines there.. At home, it's roaring vehicles, clacking dryers, clattering dishes, high pitched whistles (my mother watches football), anything high pitched, bass in music, whistling roads while driving, loud yelling, kids, banging noises, too many to name..

hey i hope you’ve already found good headphones but i’m in the exact same situation right now!! i’ve had some Taotronics headphones for about 2 years and they’re awesome. a youtuber called Yo Sandy Sam talked about them a little bit in her “autistic life hacks: 10 things you should try” video. they have bluetooth connection capability so you can play music through them and they also have a noise cancelling on/off switch in the back. i like to use both features at the same time, they’re super amazing. check them out if u want! i got the black ones on amazon for about $50

Hi Ella, another very interesting video. I am currently exploring my sensory issues. I almost always feel very anxious, fidgety and on edge (even after a long day of 7 hours working and 3 hours of cycling) and I never knew why. Also I find it hard to concentrate when I am studying (well...trying to study!). I have found the fidget cube really useful as I love the deep pressure on my hands, and, of course, I love my chewigem! I was wondering how you cope with other people around you moving around and fidgeting? I am really sensitive to movement, especially in my peripheral vision. For example, when watching tv my partner virtually has to stay completely still, or it really annoys me (not because I am being awkward, but because it makes me feel sick). Anyway, I am definitely going to try out some of the other ideas, such as the weighted blanket, as I think that would be really useful.
By the way, I was wondering if you might be able to do a video on empathy, as the stereotype is obviously that autistic people don't have empathy. The autistic people (male and female) I know are empathetic and caring people, though maybe it's not expressed in the same way that NTs would express it?

Luna Aspie hi Luna, I’m really glad you have started to explore strategies for dealing with your sensory issues.
I find movement hard too. So with three kids this can be tricky. I try to tune it out.
I can definitely do a video about empathy. Good idea. Will add it to my list.

My most hated visual/thought/sounds that makes me practically jump out of my skin are:
      1. People rubbing hands on their jeans/carpet/ brush bristles, and hearing/seeing people brushing teeth. (legit just typing this makes goosebumps form all over.)
