  • This is a special Mauna Kea interview with Ikaika Marzo and Kaho'okahi Kanuha, sitting with two leaders from two separate Pu'uhonua (a place of refuge) established in the last two years. Both took on tremendous responsibilities within their respective movements.
Ikaika Marzo many may recognize from the 2018 eruption of Kilauea, playing a vital role providing the community with updates on the eruption, he also helped establish Pu'uhonua O Puna, or 'The Hub'. The community rallied around the ad hoc location in Pahoa, people came to eat, receive donations, talk about the rapidly changing situation on the ground, or just a place to sit and reflect after losing ones home.
Pu'uhonua O Puna was many things to many people, and left a strong reputation to live up to.
More recently Pu'uhonua o Pu'u Huluhulu, the latest place of refuge established at the base of the Mauna Kea Access Road, has shown itself to the world, bringing 'Kapu Aloha' to the masses. The movement on Mauna Kea has a long history that has brought people to the base of the mountain in opposition to the planned Thirty Meter Telescope on her summit. Thousands of people have made the trip to Mauna Kea and the Pu'u Huluhulu refuge in support of A'ole TMT and Hawaiian Culture. Kaho'okahi Kanuha has been heavily involved in organizing the current movement on Mauna Kea, and has been active for years as part of the opposition to TMT.
We hope to find out more from these two prominent young Hawaiian leaders about the roots of the movement to protect Mauna Kea from further desecration, a sentiment shared by many at the Pu'u Huluhulu base camp.

So there are two inaccuracies here. Only 2 telescopes are inoperable. And the land lease is for 1.4 acres not 6 acres.

Im interested in hearing about the intent from strong community leaders like Ikaika Marzo. He has real integrity. I will likely be in disagreement with him. But I am certainly interested in the logic behind this protest, that I feel is further hurting this island economically. I feel after 2 major natural disasters in 4 years time, and the 100 million dollar economic deduction that the Kilauea eruption cost our island less than a year ago, that we need good, and responsible companies like the TMT that is investing in our island and helping raise the tides for all people in STEM.

Some information I think most people against TMT don’t actually know... it won’t be visible from the summit or lake Waiau or any burials. It will also be a mile away from the closest worship site and

Build the scope! The whole earth is sacred. Also get your facts right if your going to take the time out of your day to protest... 🤦‍♂️
