Here on my channel, I am renovating a 250 year old stone cottage on my property in Normandy, France. By using traditional, low-waste and off-grid methods, I'm aiming to keep the charm and character of this old building, and turn it into a furnished, finished home for family whilst keeping environmental impact as low as possible. There will also be content on living in France, visiting beautiful rural places, hunting for antiques, gardening, and more! Hit subscribe if you would like to keep up with my journey, and hit the notification bell to be alerted when we go LIVE where we have a first viewing of the video as it is published with a live chat so I can answer all your questions! See you in Sean's World.
The seat is one section of a so-called choir stall for monks. When they had their "office" services (laudes, vesper, etc.), for the long parts when they would stand singing the psalms, they could relax on that "cheat seat" and still officially be considered standing. That's why it's called the "misericordia" in Latin ("mercy") and similar in other languages. They could fold the seat back down when they wanted to sit. There's nothing quite as jolting as being in a silent part of a service when a monk loses his grip and the seat drops down with a loud "bang" instead of being softly lowered.
Yes that's 👍 correct
Glad you commented on the seat. I came to chime and try and say something similar. Good description! When I watch these restorations from France I often think to myself, “small wonder she has been referred to as the Eldest Daughter of the Church.” ❤
That is the origin of the german phrase 'Halt deine Klappe', which was meant as an admonishment to be gentle with the seat and now means 'shut your trap'
There are some in Ushaw College with very rude carvings underneath!
All that extra digging is so much work but I think you've made the right decision. Take care of your back!
Thanks 👌
I am so glad you rescued the last of the rocks. Now the kitchen, living room and stairs work together. Oh, that church bench is a true find. Perfect to go by the fireplace. The iron corner angels add class to the cottage. Your french oak door is a gem for the front door. Your iron gate was a steal for 20 euros. Joan of Arc, I believe, cost 5 euros. Sean, your eyes were dancing when you showed us the church bench! Indeed, it is an astrounding find. What a fufilling video today! Not only the goodies you and Sam found today will enrich and give your life joy, but your viewers will enjoy seeing them and gain knowledge about antiques. A killer of a video today. Take care. Hello from Yakima, Washington, USA.
Joan of Arc, I believe, cost 5 euros 💯
That's a very cool church stool. The little sitting ledge on the underside is called a misericorde.
Sean , I love everything that you and Sam have purchased. Thank you for taking us to the garden, your property is such a magical place.
That's a beautiful door Sean it's all really nice I'd pay twenty euros if I had Sam to restore it ❤
Terrific finds today. Including all those large stones. I'd say by the look on your face the painting was between 5 and 10 euros.
I think the angels will be perfect on the fireplace. Cool finds! Love the door.
Perfect👍🏼
Very beautifull church stool. Those cast Iron corner part are awsome to❤. The cottage is going to look beautifull when it's done.
The church seat is called a misericord 😂😂❤
Oh Sean you and your wife are such dear friends I feel…I would be so delighted to touch the rocks on your ancient buildings, your schematics for your garden…the smells..the birds , your green house…thank you folks deeply for you journey
That is a lovely seat….i saw one on another CZcams site…nice to own
Thanks so much
The church seat is lovely ❤
Lovely finds thanks for sharing ❤
Great team work with Sam finding your sought-after furnishings.
I thought the same thing as soon as you showed the brackets, They would look great on the fireplace area.
Oh Sean! That door is fabulous! What a find! And a fantastic price! Great score!
I love the corner pieces and great finds by you and Sam. The cottage is coming along and I’m so happy it will be one level aside from the front door area. The tool you use to break up the dirt floor was one of your best purchases. It has paid for itself 100 times over. Saves your back and makes it possible to break through the tamped down dirt. I love watching you use it! I think the artwork is no higher than 10 euros by the look on your face. ❤
Sean and Sam, you've made great finds. The church seat is quite unique. The missing base was probably attached to a kneeler. Those cherub brackets are fantastic and will add interest to anything to which they are affixed, including your idea by the fireplace. The Jeanne d'Arc print is a great find. After Sam makes the repairs, you can hang the Saint prominently in French style.
Hi there 😊
The seat at the end Sean . reminds me of the boot polish people ? Could be man things back in those times . Nice find
Great stuff. 🎉 best to the family, including the kitties. ❤
I love the pace of your videos (thanks Jasmine for the astute editing). Lots of variety, great explanations, hard work, lovely gardens -- something for everyone. Thank you!
Yes she's great 👍
That is the coolest prayer seat, I think that would be ideal to sit down and take off your shoes - I'm also enjoying the food forest and am learning so much about good gardening.
I love the church seat! It is georgous! 😊❤ Outstanding episode! Garden is fabulous! 😊🥰👍
Beautiful!!!
Your finds are awesome❗️👍🏼
The cheat seat will be perfect in the cottage, wherever you put it. Good buy.
Everything will look amazing in the cottage but that door is fantastic.
Well, well quite the puzzle…Sean you have done amazingly well with your patient unlocking the puzzle of the ancient build….thats how I felt for my 300 year old farm house on the 100 acres I bought in Ontario….part of Canadian history
Nice
WOW! So many wonderful finds and surprises!😮😊❤🥰👍I loved this episode!
Sam did a wonderful job finding the door it’s beautiful!! Joan is beautiful also! Cottage is coming along nicely.
Wow! Great purchases today! The cottage floor is going to be wonderful!
Wow, really found some good things today at shop. I’m really looking forward to seeing this project when you get it finished.
Your doing a great job
Thanks
Maybe you can use those beautiful windows in the upstairs
That seat is called a Miséricorde/ mercy seat.
Nice Bulkhead light !
Love the field gate, that's my sort of thing.
Beautiful church seat! So useful, too!
Very nice piece of furniture 👍
Ooh that Sean....he's such a tease isn't he.....😂
€10
The brackets are beautiful! 😊
Those benches are in chapels of Convents and Monasteries. They attended many services a day and used the bump-out under the seat when standing, like you said.
Your filming and editing is getting better, Sean! Love you to bits! 😁🇺🇸
Very beautiful church seat 😍
some nice finds
Love the purchase 😊
You sure did well with your purchases Sean! Your cherry trees, oh my, if I lived closer I'd afraid I'd be snitching some! Good job with your purchases as well Sam!
Great vlog so interesting the purchases all great finds I love them all. And the restoration work was great also a bit of everything
Great finds Sean and so in keeping with the age of the cottage well done Sam too.I'm loving how you think things through Sean and you never rush things , I'm a big believer that jobs evolve and change depending on the issues they present especially with old buildings , I think that's part of the fun of renovating but also that's when your skills kick in and your vast knowledge ...love it xx
Thats a beautiful door. And Oak. !!! Good eye Sam
Those corners are perfect for the fireplace
Wow, what beautiful finds for the cottage. I love the chair and cast iron corner fixings. Some did well. I will guess 5 euros for Joan of Arc.❤
that is so great. Anything that has more than on use is fabulous. i love history pieces.
Wow! An oak door, great find Sam. The cottage and garden are really coming along. Thanks Sean. 🙏🍁🇨🇦
Your finds are so interesting and perfect for the Cottage !!
Hi Sean. That's a Choir Stall seat that you have, I've seen very similar in Cathedrals, the designs follow on from centuries ago. It's a really nice find 👍
Sam is a Gem finding your bargains the picture 20 Euros🍰☕🍰☕💐
Love Sue ❤❤❤🇬🇧❤❤❤
Great finds. Your “food forest”
Is coming along too! I like this concept
The items you found for the cottage are amazing! Nice continued work on the floor of the cottage. I think the corners for the rocks at the bottom of the stairs is a great idea. I love the items that Sam found for you also.
Thanks
I could actually read the upside down sign as I am in Australia ;)
🤣😂
Ha ha 😂
They don’t do things like this anymore. Now things don’t last long . Very good buys and they will last another couple of 100 of years and they go very well with the cottage age. Excellent finds l would say.
Great seat for your old Uncle to sit on lol😅
Yeah mate 👌 definitely
That chair is wonderful💙
Sean, the cottage floor is going to be nice. I like the design you've come up with. I loved those metal corner brackets and the church chair are perfect for the cottage.
The forest garden is such a cool idea.
Cheers.
Nice church seat love the corner pieces. I am interested in the gardens you are making. Good work
So much lovely today! 😊
What some great finds!
Great finds at the fleamarket. I especially like the little chair that folds out. Kathy USA 🇺🇸
I hope you will show the picture again after Sam restores it.
If l can make a good job of it we will hang it in the cottage when done😉
When I saw the corner pieces, I immediately thought of the same thing Sean. Place on the corners, at the base, of walls. Great when vacuuming so you don't bang out the corners. Great chair. Looking good. :)
Those were some great finds. The seat is very unique and would be perfect in the cottage. I like your natural way of gardening. I try to do the same thing.
Love the new Goodies ❤
I love the seat for the cottage. Also the iron corners you bought. For the painting I would not give a penny.
Here in Northern California it is so very hot! 104-113 farenheit for at leas the next 10 days. In Celsius that’s 40-45! The French weather, with a few sprinkles of rain looks wonderful💕. You and Sam made some terrific finds. The bench and corner brackets are just perfect….and that door, wow.
Love the seat, great finds.
Excellent work and video!!
👍 Excellant Find ! Love IT!
Sean. Use some Coopers Oil on the church chair and it’ll shine like new.
Great finds Sean well done. Making good progress mate. 👌❤️😀
I like your new blue work boots 🥾
Glad you like them!
This was a lovely episode woth a bit of everything I love all the finds and your garden is beautiful I like that you explain the whys and wherefores of all you do in this great renovation 😊❤
I love the Cast iron Cherubs.
U got some great finds
Agree! Absolutely love it! I am getting an old chair that converts into a table similar. Old small are hard to find anyway, items you need to buy when you see them as they are getting harder to find even in Australia as retailers buy up and new generations throw away, I am building a tiny house but will buy what I Love, I must love it or need it and know where it is going as I have no storage.
Very cool find!
Great finds!! 🎉
A prayer seat.
hey think about it like this. for every building mat u buy at the carboots you save maybe 20 40 euros.
that means at least one of your antiques was free. :)
keep up the good work sean i your videos are super relaxing. keep showing everyone what a true british blue collar gentleman is !
Thanks
Hi Sean in New Zealand where I was raised up in hill country I remember my parents detesting Fennel it was growing wild everywhere and it had the name “Stinkweed” I’m sure it was poisonous for the animals as well. Love all your purchases a very good score indeed
Fabulous finds all around, well done😁
placing another small dormer over the hole in the roof to match the existing one for hay might look cute
Brilliant finds at the vide grenier. These items are perfect, love the monks chair (thats as I know it as) doesn’t mean I’ve got right though. Love your channel Sean & family
I love it
Your such a good man, doing all that work on the cottage floor, I like the chair , could it be a toilet basin seat holder, although it looks quite fancy.
That is a beautiful piece and perfect as a place to take off outdoor footwear. It would be lovely if your find (or build) something similar on either side of the hearth. Quick seating for a cozy evening by the fire without obstructing the overall width of the hearth. What do you think? 🤔
Knowing I had an art restorer in the family 80 euros, but I would try to get it for 20. Those brackets are really nice. Good luck with the door.
pfiouuuu superbes trouvailles et curiosités....
Have to agree with All the other comments - this video was a Gem today - it's Amazing how upbeat one becomes when things/treasured finds come together. My favourite are those corner brackets - Perfect! The Church seat (my opinion) usage by front door shoes on/off - Oak Door - what a find! Building Materials ALSO what a find and unbelievably cheap 👏👏 - Great humour with the Signs for your Air BnB (maybe when you've finished the Cottage and your House) we'll see them hung up outside but until then - we can wait .
As for the Joan of Arc - I'm only going to give a price of 1 Euro mainly because I wouldn't have bought it - Sorry - I find when it comes to pictures/ paintings everyone has their own preference. If you're happy with it - that's all that matters ❤
Not really into the antiques and all, but I can totally see the point in buying supplies you will need for your place in the future and if you can get it cheaper, then that is just smart thinking.
The damaged Joan of Orc painting? 5 Euros?
I hope there's not a big hole under that void Sean? Take care. I just love watching your video, s, don't need to know all the do, s and don't, s. You know what you are doing.
Lovely garden. ❤ Ladybird 🐞 beetles or ladybugs will serve your garden well, Shaun. You can order them online. Good things. 🎉
You probably already know that. lol 🐞
I have them in abundance
@@Seans_World...of course you do, such a healthy beautiful garden. Again, thanks for sharing.
Lovely garden you have and that antique seat will be useful for the front door :) I would love to see a window in your kitchen bring some natural other side of room light. If you aren't going to use those window pieces you got would go lovely in it if they could open on a swivel to let air in when you need it for ventilation. If you ever do decide to do self service gites you are ready for it. Great bargain Sam indeed will bring more light into the cottage. 20 euro for a painting I have to fix even a lithograph. The frame is damaged as well.
Love the brocant finds - is the cottage kitchen/dining & living room and 2 bedrooms & bathroom ? Then 2 barns and another cottage?
Yes
@@Seans_World I thought so sometimes it’s hard to imagine without floor plans - looking forward to the renovations x
I think the church seat is called misericord. ???
That's correct or a mercy seat
