This guy right here is one of THE BEST NHL 95 players in the world. Join our league to witness his infamous Drirty Down B signature move.
The Kunio hockey game is wonderful! I finally got it CIB for my 400+ hockey game collection.
NHL 95 is my favorite hockey game of all time as well. To this day, when I play any of the new NHL games, I always switch the controls to NHL 95/94 controls when it allows!!!
THIS. IS. THE. WAY.
There's a nhl 94 rewind that also includes the graphics but 21 roster. It's pretty cool.
I've watched this video several times now. Love it. I've been playing every hockey game can get my hands on for about a year now. A couple on here I haven't played yet. Thanks for the recommendations!
Mutant Hockey League for EVER!!! Thanks much for sharing!!!
Totally agree with your lineup 👍 I usually play NHL 95 but also go between 94 & 96 but I always play BLADES OF STEEL with the boys and some beers 🍻
Old school hockey games are THE BEST for a night of beers and smacktalk with the lads. :)
At 4min 10sec or there abouts...the puck looks very much like a 3.5inch floppy. :)
Great video, as always! You have been a huge inspiration for content creation as I have learned over the course of the last year. SQUARES FOR LIFE!!!
Thank you so much!! Keep up the great work on your side as well!
2 on 2 open ice challenge is a great hockey game. Basically, NBA JAM for hockey. Not a lot of people know it was released for the PS1.
That Kunio-kun game was my first ever game I owned. And I'm not that old (only 23). It's the fact that here in Brazil, we usually had "Famiclones" (Famicom/NES consoles made in China or, in our case, Brazil. Those that were made in Brazil were actually licensed by Nintendo back in the 1980s, until Nintendo itself decided to bring the NES over, but it was already 1993, and it costed a lot for the same thing that was already on the market a LONG time ago and already getting outdated with things like the SNES and Mega Drive/Genesis on the block. Essentially, they were competing in a market flooded by their own product 😂), and mine just so happened to include a 4-in-1 cartridge that had 4 of the Japanese Kunio-kun games (football/soccer, hockey, basketball and sprinting). All of them were loads of fun, but I remember being addicted to the hockey one, because it was so fast, even for NES standards. The game was fully in Japanese, and even though translation patches exist online, the best way to enjoy them is by purchasing the Double Dragon + Kunio-Kun collection on PS4 (unfortunately not available in Brazil), where they have all been translated properly by Arc System Works.
Anyway, back to the game. It was funny to see people skating around in kendo gear (which could fire sonic booms if you jumped twice????), baseball gear (using the bat as a stick), American football gear, and even the girls skated around in skirts, which the guys could equip (as you unlock the defeated team's uniforms, and those give out different ATK or DEF stats), and the goalie got this funny-looking teddy bear mask 😂, but overall, the game is VERY fun. The last uniforms you unlock really make your team dominate on the ice, and you really going to need it for the final teams. And it's such a shame that it was teased at the end of Crash n' The Boys: Street Challenge, but unfortunately the game never came to America. 10/10 game.
Blades of steel is my all-time favorite retro hockey game love it and still play it today!!!!
NHL 95 is awesome too
Thanks for watching, Jeremy! :)
Blades of Steel sucks
Nah.
Wow, I did not know about them last two games, but I have to check them out as they both look like fun, especially Bush League Hockey.
I am glad to see that you found the Ike! Ike! Game and enjoyed it. It's true that if you liked RCR, Crash Dodge Ball, and even World Cup Soccer (which used the Kunio Kun sprites, albeit varied for all the countries) you will enjoy their take on ice hockey. I know I certainly did.
Fantastic video!
Thank you, '85! Appreciate it - Bush League Hockey is a fantastic game and well worth picking up. With that Flyers logo in your pic - dare I say it, it's almost Broadstreet Bully-esque. Bobby Clark would be proud. ;)
My favorite sport! Love hockey and all these games are bangers, great video ❤..
Thanks David!!
Love the channel!
Wholesome vibes!
Thanks so much for checking it out!
Yes please 🙏 review all the genesis hockey games people want to know the best of the best.🏆
Something about the 16 bit hockey games we’re just special imo a fun game to check out if u ever get a chance is nhl slapshot on the Wii somehow I knew nhl 95 would be making an appearance great vid as always jay thank u for sharing
Thank you for watching - and I'll check out Slapshot on the Wii!
Loved using the Speedy Puck and No Goalies cheats on NES Hockey
This was such a great video! I NEED River City Hockey and Mutant League. Never played either of them. My favorite retro hickey game is ESPN on the Sega CD. My brother and I put so many hours on that game.
ESPN on the Sega CD is one of my must buys this year - I LOVED the Genesis game when I finally played it a couple years ago. With River City Hockey, make sure you find an English Patch for it if you play the ROM and not the physical, there's a surprising amount of nuance in the menus that really shows up in the English version. Otherwise - enjoy!
I never knew about blades of steel until now, absolutely gonna try it because it looks just as fun and interesting as mike tyson's punchout!
River City Hockey! My life just got better for knowing this exists.
Definitely gonna check out Super Blood Hockey. I loved the Nintendo Ice Hockey on the NES and this looks like a crazy relative of that game.
It's 100% it's meth-addled half a brain-cell cousin, but it is SO good.
Thanks for the list, as a Switch owner I've been missing a decent hockey title.
Fantastic video! Love seeing NHL 95 over NHL 94. For me, I'm with you in that NHL 95 takes the crown. It may not be my favorite hockey game of all-time, but it was the one I spent the most time with as a kid, and I just love it. Unrelated: my buddies and I went to the Toledo outdoor game last year (or two years back...time has no meaning anymore) at Fifth Third Field, and it was a blast. Absolutely freezing, but a great time nonetheless. Anyway, awesome vid! Love all of the sports gaming vids.
Oh that's so cool! I'd love to do an outdoor game, I've never had the chance - I'll have to keep an eye out if they offer anything like that again!!
I love Blades of Steel. great list of retro hockey games
I know it isn’t crazy old but Ton of fun was NHL Slapshot
Played Neketsu hockey on rom early 2000s, and bought it on famicom finally 2 years ago
Did you know that Manon Rheame was drafted by the Tampa Bay lightning?
The 1st lady of hockey, she was nicknamed
I saw Manon Rheaume when she played in some pre-season games for the Lightning back when they played at the Florida State Fairgrounds! :)
Ike Ike! Nekketsu Hockey-bu: Subete Koronde Dairantou skills was insane,
NHL 95. With the big backhand stick, and the backwards slapshots. Those 2 things made the game not good. Take the puck control and shooting from NHL 94 and combine with 95 speed, checking, and animations and you have a near perfect game.
100% agreed with everything you've said here. Thanks for watching!
If not an actual spot on this list, to me it should at least get an honorable mention. What game am I referring to? None other than Activision's Ice Hockey for the Atari 2600. IMO, this was the best sports game ever released for the console. I know I'm slightly biased because hockey is my #1 sport. Early sports games on the 2600 were absolutely atrocious. They redeemed themselves with the RealSports series. The problem with that was, all other major pro sports were represented, hockey was not. Activision published the only version of hockey ever released for the 2600. Due to the system's limitations, each team only had 2 players,(a goalie & a forward.) There were no blue or red lines, no center ice or face off circles, no penalties or on ice officials. despite all these shortcomings, It was still a fun game to play. One team's colors were red & blue the other team's colors yellow & green. I always played the 1st team, imagining it was my NY Rangers against the now defunct California Golden Seals. Great times.
Fun Fact: Actor and comedian Phil Hartman (R.I.P.) starred in the commercial for the game.
I put the video on and said "Scott, I'm gonna go change outta my PJ's, let me know what I miss when I come back." and he said "I'll probably know them all"......WRONG!
Denis might fight you that NHL 94 is better and as crazy as Mutant League Hockey is, we definitely want it.
OMG, encourage your players to take stimulants LOL. That's hilarious.
NHL Hitz 2002 or 2003 on Xbox is phenomenal. Can't recommend that enough.
NHL 94 and 95 are interchangable to me - both are spectacular. But 95 is the one I always pick up first. :)
I've gotta check out Hitz!
In this video you say that NHL 95 is your favorite. In the Genesis roundup video linked at the end, you said that it wasn't as good as 94. Is there a video where you reassess your evaluation? Just wondering. If not, what flipped them in your mind?
If you haven't talked about NES baseball games I want you to talk about Base Wars the Robot fighting baseball game
Personally prefer ea hockey for the genesis games just because it's absolutely wild how many fights happen and also you can play as Portugal of all the hockey nations haha
Also check out slapshot on the master system, it's very similar but cool differences with blades of steel, was my first ever hockey game
Hit the ice was the best arcade hockey game with tons of violence in it.
Okay, Mutant League Hockey looks like a blast. I really want to try that one out. Has it ever been released for modern systems?
Sadly not. It IS a blast (as is Mutant League Football, built on the Madden '94 engine), but there's been no porting of the classic games up to modern consoles. There WAS a Mutant Football League update a couple years ago, but I never played it.
You can learn more about Mutant League here from this incredible video by @SecretGalaxyTV: czcams.com/video/Aje6e7pg97k/video.html
@@SquarePegs Thanks for the video. It really is a shame that there was never a Mutant League Baseball. Being able to abbreviate the name to MLB is awesome.
Mutant league stomps, if you don't like it, you must hate fun!
Hum... never played NHL 95 on genesis... don't like the controller as much as the snes so it's tough to get me to go sports on genesis... maybe who knows. I'll try it. I prefer NHL 97-98 on SNES (Bush hockey league seems based on the NHL 99 on PC or N64 almost...)
What's your opinion of NHL 94 on the Genesis?
Love it. On any given day, it might be the one I prefer over 95. The nostalgia goggles on 95 are mighty. ;)
I love nhl 06
I thought you were an NHL '94 guy? Guess I need to pay more attention haha.
Honestly, both are incredible and I've spoken glowingly about each of them. Your confusion is warranted. 🤣
I don't understand, in your rankings you have EA95 an A, EA94 an S. So did you just change your mind twice ? Oh and my fav is EA93 on MD and it has nothing to do with nostalgia either with me. I played them all first being original EA NHL then EA94 and so on. Great list btw 👍
Eh, my rankings are a sliding scale and are always open for change. 🙂 My opinions are always in flux. And sometimes I just misspeak. 😜
River city hockey
You like hockey? You should mention that once in a while! Can you play any on the JVC X'EYE?
You know, I'm not sure! If only I knew someone with an X'EYE that could confirm it for me...
@@SquarePegs I'm at a loss there
This was a really fun video, and I definitely need to try both the Nekketsu hockey game and Bush Hockey League! Also, I'm pretty sure Mutant League Hockey was built on the NHL '94 engine, so purists can stop whining.
My go-to 16-bit hockey game was always NHL Stanley Cup for the SNES, though. I dunno why, because, objectively, I know NHL '94 and NHL '95 on the Genesis were better, but there was something about Stanley Cup that hooked me and has never let go. What are your thoughts on that game - I'm really curious to get your opinion!
Thanks so much for watching! And yeah, it was built on the '94 engine, but purists gotta nitpick. ;)
I haven't played NHL Stanley Cup in a couple of years. I need to give it another go - I remember not being overly enamored with it, but that could have just been a time and place thing. :) Thanks for the reminder!
@@SquarePegs I know not everyone is a fan of Stanley Cup because it's built around on-the-ice Mode 7 gameplay, but it really worked for me. I kind of want to go play it now, thanks to this discussion!
Did someone really paint that rainbow on the ice? That's got to be in Canada, right?
They sure did. And not in Canada, this is here in Michigan.
What’s ur local team I’ve been on ohl binge so I’m jus curios
Kalamazoo Wings - we're an ECHL city.
@@SquarePegs 👍👍
Too bad they don’t make it for the new consoles…3ds…switch…nhl94, 95
A couple years ago, NHL 21 or 22 dropped, EA did a download only version of NHL '94 with updated teams and rosters. I thought it was the smartest decision they'd ever made, and I legit thought we'd be getting it on the Switch.
Needless to say, I'm still waiting. :/
Even local hockey has been infected with the woke mind virus now? The rainbow in the ice was truly disgusting. That would be the last time I ever supported that organization.
So don't support them. The only thing disgusting here is your bigotry that you're trying to trumpet as moral superiority. Kindly stay off my channel, please.
Jesus tapdancing Christ. "Woke mind virus." Y'all are fucking hilarious.
NHL 95 no fucking way…94 blows it out of the water…think you’re pretty spot on, other then that…pro sport hockey is better then 95 lol
Agree to disagree. :) Thanks for watching!
