    Also, my observation is that there are a lot of ppl in these comment’s complaining about what JimBob does or doesn’t say…instead why don’t y’all just give it a try? Rather than bitchin, get to ditchin’ and planting, take off your shoes and socks and put them toes in the earth and finger nails in the dirt and do it. Watch a video, go outside, do what you watched, wait to see what happens. That’s how you learn what works and what doesn’t. Failures are valuable lessons. I love you all.

    im in NC Fl west coast, zone 9a. February was WAY too hot this year :( Its usually our coldest month and we only had short night freezes in January. I planted mine January 28th this year, they all came up and grew to beautiful plants. i had 17. I have 4 - 4x8 beds inside my screened greenhouse that I can pull plastic over and clamp down when needed. I am not growing in FL soil! I have 1/2" wire mesh covered with cardboard then some straw then tons of good dirt. Planted tomatoes in this bed last year and potatoes in bags (got 2 potatoes out of the 9 bags last year 😢 got too hot). so this year they went inside the greenhouse. they were beautiful through April 1st then started to thin and die off. Forgot to mention, once dirt hilling was done a total of 1 foot tall we put straw. Anyway We got very little potatoes again. again, March got too hot (still unusually warm). Im thinking of planting in october or November this next and last time if they're another fail. I can cover and keep them warm if needed. What do you think?

    For those of us who want to grow our own in Florida it sure would be helpful to be more specific with the “when to plant” and when the harvest is expected which you didn’t share. 😫

    • @JimBobsGarden
      @JimBobsGarden  Před 2 lety +1

      I did say that I plant right after Valentines Day. When to harvest is covered in the potato harvest video but the basic answer is when the plants die back.

      @@JimBobsGarden can I also plant in the fall??

    • @JimBobsGarden
      @JimBobsGarden  Před rokem

      @@VioletUpton Of course you can but it may not produce as big or as many potatoes. I have done it and gotten a very few very small potatoes. You can always give it a try and all you will be out is the seed.

    Just a thought on the “growth inhibitor”, would the potato not grow sprouts at the eyes were it sprayed? I got a bag as well from a buddy that was sprouted big time after a year in his pantry. Seems unlikely based on that alone to think there’d be some “growth inhibiting chemical”. Just my 2 cents. =)

    What is the latest date in Florida for spring planting ? Did the peelings that sprouted have eyes but no sprouting? Should potatoes be forced to sprout prior to planting? Thank you

    • @JimBobsGarden
      @JimBobsGarden  Před 2 lety +2

      The potato peelings that grew were just basic potato peelings. I did not notice any sprouts but the wife actually peeled them for dinner. As far as the latest date for planting I would say we are very close maybe a couple more weeks or any potatoes that are grown will be very small. As far as forcing potatoes to sprout I am not sure how you would even do that, but no they will sprout just fine when given enough time. Thanks for the questions.

    So you buy grocery store potatoes and plant them without eyes/chits on them? Any worry of blight? I just planted store bought fingerlings yesterday without eyes. Should I dig them up and wait until Jan? I live in Jacksonville. TY!

    Super neat video. I am planting everything I can possibly plant as I for-see severe food shortages due to the stolen election of 2020.

    • @JimBobsGarden
      @JimBobsGarden  Před 2 lety +4

      Well there has been a lot of talk about food shortages recently mostly due to the lack of production this year from Ukraine. Many people do not understand that Ukraine and Russia provide a huge amount of the world wide supply of fertilizer. Most all food we consume is reliant on fertilizer right now so it is anyones guess how much production loss and thus shortages we will experience. In any case, growing your own food is always a good idea in my opinion.

  • @bobarama13

    any fertilizer needed?

    • @JimBobsGarden
      @JimBobsGarden  Před 6 měsíci

      I do not use fertilizer on anything I grow. I will typically put a bit of compost down before they grow and again once they are up about a foot.

    I'm grown potatoes in June July I know it's hot but I've put them in raised boxes with black soil some of them have rooted some of them have rotted and the ground and the stocks have rotted is that too much water?

    • @JimBobsGarden
      @JimBobsGarden  Před 2 lety

      I personally think it has more to do with the heat of the soil. While too much water can cause rot I still have rot here in Jacksonville in the summer with the fast draining soil we have here. Once the sustained nighttime temps stay above 75 I seem to get more rot on my potatoes.

  • @lzshow

    Why can't I plant them in August in a container?

    • @JimBobsGarden
      @JimBobsGarden  Před 2 lety +1

      You can it's your garden. It is just my experience that potatoes will die in the heat.
