Guus Meeuwis' song 'Brabant' is more or less the anthem of my province Noord-Brabant. It's very beautiful. He sings (and talks) with a soft g. The northern Dutch use a hard g, we in the south have a soft g. Hard to explain the difference. But this is why his concerts are named 'groots met een zachte g' meaning 'great with a soft g'.
Guus Meeuwis is a great singer and an amazing performer. You should visit one of his concerts!
This particular song has a really 'carnaval' atmosphere, typical for the south.

Imagine that a few years back this guy went overseas to London, rented the prestiguous Royal Albert Hall, did a concert there filling all seats with dutch fans and then imagine the faces of the Englishmen working there when this song came along :-) Carnival in the Royal Albert.... priceless :-)!!

About the swim or drown part:
The lyrics are "pompen of verzuipen" which lit translates to "pump or drown" (a saying we have originating from shipping)
Imho in this case I would have translated it to "drink or drown" as it refers to the beer that is falling from the sky in Meters (so yes, we use a distance to measure beer... A "Meter bier" is a Meter long piece of wood with holes that hold around 11 beer glasses. Often at a discount because we are still Dutch ;))

Nah, nog niet goed hoor 🙂
Het is pompen of verzuipen. Is afgeleid van wegpompen of opdrinken!
      Listig gevonden tekst.
Weg pompen
      Pompen of verzuipen.
There is thunder and it's raining.... It is raining miles of beer... We have to pump it (leegpompen) or we drink it... That is just the way it is...
      🎼ThEre is thunder and it's raining🎵
🎼It is raining miles of beer🎵
🎼We have to pUmp it or we drInk it🎶
🎼ThAt is jUst the way it is🎵
      Klemtoon in hoofdletters.

      Zuipen = To drink
      Verzuipen = To drown*
      2 compleet andere vertalingen...
(* Geld Verzuipen = Spending money on alcohol.

      Geloof me...
"Its raining miles of beer" klinkt tien keer beter in het Engels.
In het Engels heeft "a monkey out of the sleeve" totaal geen waarde.
      😉

I was at this show one day after this video was recorded, during the matineeshow and whan this song started, the show had to be suspended because of a thunderstorm passing over.
We had loads of fun tho, because after the storm passed, the show continued (even though rain was still pouring) and we were all soaking wet. I used to go here every year with my brother and my parents, the vibe is terrific!

It's a really fun song but also about what it means to party and why it's important. Guus Meeuwis is really great in giving meaning to songs without that being distracting from the vibe. This was also made because he felt Carnaval was in decline with people staying inside all day.

I've been there a few times with my daughter. One big party "Groots met een zachte G" (big with a soft G = let me explain that. Like Floor Jansen and myself we are from the South and our G Sound is much softer that the area Amsterdam, middle and North of the Netherlands). Every year this is in Eindhoven and every year it's sold out.

    Het regent meters bier.
In the Netherlands, you can buy a meter of beer. meaning they have a plank of 1 meter with holes in them filled with 11 cups of beer.
Sometimes they hold it up above their heads but accidentally drop it, so it is raining beer.

"Pompen of verzuipen" means pumping or drowning. It comes from ships cause when there is a LOT of rain the ship could get so heavy it could sink so you have to man the pumps. It's a Dutch saying when you HAVE to do something. Kind of the Dutch version of "do or die" though also not exactly as it's more used when it's clear that not doing something is worse than doing something wrong.
Basically it's calling people to party because doing nothing will make you look more stupid than actually acting stupid.

Normally when he sings tunder and lightning theres a tsunami of beer in the air people trow there beer as hard as they can in the air to make it rain beer. He invented this song for a shedparty called ajoc festival. It's a tradition to take a beer shower or trow beer at the party normally your soaked true after a minute in the partyshed. Guus saw the reaction of the people with other songs he did and made this song and the next hitsong was born. One of his greatest hits ever.

He sings it's raining meters of beer. A meter of beer is a whole row of glasses in an meter long wooden mold so one person can hold a lot of glasses in one time. Saying it's raining something is an expression meaning there's lots of them. So people are ordering meters of beer all over the place.
