- France's far-right National Rally (RN) has responded to criticism from opponents regarding its economic plans, asserting that its proposed policies would not harm the economy. President Emmanuel Macron's centrist alliance has positioned itself as the sole defense against potential financial mismanagement. The nationalist and anti-immigrant RN currently leads the polls ahead of the snap parliamentary elections scheduled for June 30 and July 7. A newly formed coalition of left-wing and environmentalist parties follows in second place, with Macron's party trailing significantly.
The decision to call the snap election came after Macron's party suffered a significant defeat to the RN in the European elections, creating upheaval in French politics. This move led to a decline in the euro, a drop in French stocks, and an increase in France's borrowing costs. Jordan Bardella, the RN leader and potential future prime minister if the party wins a majority, sought to calm concerns about the party's high-spending plans during a presentation to Medef, France's leading employers' organization.
Bardella pledged to conduct an audit of public finances to understand the available financial leeway before implementing reforms. He assured that the plan to lower the retirement age from 64 to 60 would apply to those who started working before the age of 20. Additionally, Bardella mentioned that the RN government would propose a revised 2024 budget over the summer, including measures such as reducing production taxes on companies. He also advocated for the European Union to cut its spending and for France to decrease its contributions to the EU. Furthermore, he emphasized the need to close fiscal loopholes that allow highly profitable companies to evade taxes.
Macron's camp has criticized both the RN and the new left-wing bloc, the Popular Front, labeling their spending promises as irresponsible and likely to drive the national debt to unsustainable levels. The EU has already reprimanded France for its high debt.
