Yep my father has been a lure maker for nearly fifty years and I have been lure fishing for over twenty years. Your advice is spot on! One little tip for barra and jacks can be a simple stall technique. Watched my old man get numerous fish doing it. Tricky part is timing, speed and knowing the buoyancy of the lure.

Your tutorials are always easy to grasp, even I reckon for someone just starting out. Fishing is such a democratic sport, anyone can enjoy it even with the simplest types of equipment and fish can be found almost anywhere ( the Earth is mostly covered in water) but even though a small child can catch a lot of fish, I don't know that anyone ever completely figures out every aspect of this sport and that's what keeps it interesting.

Hopefully one day I'll make my way to Australia and fish the big gts! Or you guys can come visit my boutique resort on st croix. Great stuff Briggsy, its the little things that you say you can do that can make the difference of a hook up or donuts. Thanks for a really good explanation of why and when you do changes, when to retrieve fast or slow, the countdown method works great. As you say learn how your lure sinks, dives, wobbles and skips. Really good info Briggsy. Cheers Muzza

i was burning a popper back over open water and had a monster pike kill it, straightened out the hooks :(
A lot of times id cast, pop, then chill for 10 to 20 secs and have one hit it.
    (Across Usa for reference)
Try out a suspending jerkbait. Ive seen you guys use xraps n such, but try to jerk on slack line. Just a quick flick of the wrist, not a long drag. From reeling with a twitch, up to a 20 second pause for super finnicky/cold fish. Works wonders over here.

You da Man. It all depends on the feed where I am. Fast slow all depends on the forage, current, and depth. I always start with the biggest popper I have. If that 70 kilo fish is around that's what I'm looking for so big first. Learn to use a carpenter floating stick and you can work anything else no matter how stiff the rod.

It amazes me that they hit popers on the cast, surely if they do that they would hit any hard body on the cast, im sure it works but I sure don't understand why it works on the cast compared to other lures. I was at Lake tyre today with the tide right out (not fishing just daydreaming and trying to sight fish in my head) and watching these bugs or tiny fish, pop in and out just like a popper, rhey were extremely erratic and random in their movement and making very visible turbulence, and then I saw what I think was a flathead take a popping bug. So its a smaller scale than your lures but clearly there's something in it. Im having so many problems using lures. Watching every video for clues.
Of about 10 fishing outings all are donuts except one where I swapped back to bait and picked up 5 whiting within 50mins. I will continue to try and crack this lure thing but its becoming increasingly frustrating. Clearly there is something wrong with my technique as there is no shortage of fish in the gippsland lakes. Using 4 rods, (entry level light gear light squad rods and daiwa reels), all with braid 8lbx3 and 12lbx1 with fluro leaders 4lbx2 8lbx1 12lbx1) size 2 and 1 hooks. Using zman grubs, junkie minnows, atomic fat crank.
So frustrating. Mix up the retrieve and still donuts.
Edit: watching this maybe my retrieves are just way too slow. Even though its years old, thanks for the video and the info. I'd be happy with a toady or puffer or sting ray right now at least I would be off 00. Anyway I learnt a lot from this so thanks.

Brigs I have an idea for a video. In this tutorial it occurred to me that you think about fishing in a different light than I would have considered, almost like you are feeling the mood of the fish. You talk of pissing off the fish in the area with poppers and other lures before trying to catch them on stickbaits. You seem to have a sense of what the fish are doing , so could you tell us what other ways can you "read the room"?
