  • All the bridges on the north side of the mall are down. Only three remain; one on the east side of Ward’s, and two on the south side (Ward’s and Entry B, above Entry E, to the mall).
    There’s not going to be a great vantage point to capture the remaining sections as they come down. I’ll get what I can, but updates may slow until demo on the mall starts.

    Those JCPenney letters you see against the building look like the signs that were on the outside.

      @bw2273 Hope to have a fresh update tonight. Was out there a few days ago, and there wasn't enough change to bother filming.

    You don't see as many malls around anymore as you use to back in the days before internet, Amazon, & i-phones.

    You know why businesses left the big malls? They wanted the money it took to provide all that beautiful indoor mall experience for their customers. Pure greed. One CEO said,' why should we pay high dollar rent to have a store in that fancy mall, when we can build our own stand alone building?' It was pure greed by the retailers. Big indoor malls were the last great for the public good thing our wide open market provided. Looking back, cities, counties, and even states should have jumped in and save some of these for the public good places.

      For this mall in particular, it seems that Simon raised the rent considerably after acquisition. Renovations were barely finished and a number of stores were already moving out.

    They’re definitely making short work of the parking garage. Thanks for continuing to document all this.

    Very sad seeing century 3 mall in this state. I reside in South Africa but last year February, I took a liking to abandoned mall videos and century 3 happened to be the first exploration video I watched so for me , it's like sentimental and it's one mall I was hoping would remain. Sadly , like Jamestown, Richmond, richland, Fiesta, North Dekalb, Knoxville center , and recently added to this list of demolition, Northridge mall , it seems these long standing abandoned malls have started meeting their fate and I'm afraid century 3's time is up . Searching on CZcams, century and Randall Park mall, share almost similar sizes , both heavily subject to vandalism and decay, and both stood undefeated to our eyes until someone granted that demolition orders 😢

      I wish I could’ve seen Randall Park Mall in person. It was the sister mall to Century III, so they share a lot of design cues. Randall Park was actually bigger than Century III and went even harder with the ramps.
      A lot of people thought that Century III would stand until nature took her down, if nature could take her down. The place is quite overbuilt and is still 98% structurally sound. It was a big day when demolition was supposed to start.
      It’s sad that of all the malls in Pittsburgh, it had to be this one. If DeBartolo would’ve sold to another player (CBL perhaps), things would be a lot different for the better. But, I’ve gotten through the process and am at peace with losing Century III. I’m finding new malls to fall in love with, and Westmoreland Mall in Greensburg is the next closest to Century III, design-wise, in the Pittsburgh area. Monroeville Mall is also doing okay despite its location, and it is basically an older copy of South Hills Village. The floor plan is strikingly similar.

    Might only be using 4 machines because he can not find qualified operators...been doing demolition for 24 years that's the biggest issue with business that requires " work" not standing around complaining about pushing buttons or filling a bag with the correct food in the ac

    Contractor is using only 4 pieces of equipment used to take down 1 million sq ft of mall? Does not look like they are working very hard! Shame.

      I suspect that they don’t have the permits for bringing down the mall itself yet. They’ve been really careful to not damage the exterior of the mall.
      Of course, given their 2-year estimate, they may not ramp up the workforce much. Given the rate of progress on the parking deck, the timing and workforce seems to be correct. The mall has concrete floors, but all the walls are block or brick, so I anticipate faster progress on the building vs. the solid concrete parking deck. They’ve already gutted most of the interior.

    I honestly think that once the entire Century 3 Mall has been completely demolished with no part of the building standing, the road that is currently called Century 3 Mall will no longer be called Century 3 Mall.

    • @MrTsolar
      @MrTsolar  Před měsícem

      I wonder what the future of that road will be. West Mifflin is adamant that the mall owns it despite it not being part of the parcels on the map. All the other roads connecting to it have been resurfaced while it has not.

    Did you happen to see where the waste is being trucked to? There is a construction waste landfill on top of the hill.

      I’ll check it out the next time I’m there.
      I’m not sure where stuff from inside is going, but the parking deck is concrete and metal. The concrete gets broken down and is currently piled up around the edges of the parking lot while the metal is sorted out and sent to a scrap yard/recycler.

    • @MrTsolar
      @MrTsolar  Před měsícem

      Materials from inside appear to be sorted into piles inside the mall. Some items were scrapped like electrical gear and escalators, but some pictures posted elsewhere show giant piles of ceiling tiles and scrap metal in the middle of the mall.
