Hurt is like a man singing at his own funeral.
I cry every time I hear that version, doesn't matter where I am, it makes tears flow from my eyes. Every time
Instablaster...
I have seen the video hundreds of times and it still his my soul
It makes me emotional even before I hear the words. It's just way too much for me..
I remember Trent said he was anxious about JC covering Hurt because it was such a personal song. Then when it was played for him he said “it was if it had been written for him all along.
Let's all take a moment to imagine an aging Johnny Cash listening to 90s industrial rock in his house when he first discovered Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt."
That's one of the reasons I initially found most of his later covers so jarring. I never thought I'd hear Johnny Cash covering a song like 'Personal Jesus,' but it happened.
Brigit Bryner
Wow, I thought you were joking, that sounded absolutely bonkers to me... But I guess it did happen, holy shit xD
How isn't "Land of Confusion"the Disturbed cover? "Sound of Silence" is terrible.
Quickscope One Eighty not just that but shout (2000) was a good cover but ishfwilf(i still haven't found what i'm looking for) is the worst cover by them
The sound of silence is awesome you tone deaf twit
Johnny Cash, covering NIN’s “Hurt” was simply BRILLIANT, his rendition showed humility which he was feeling for so many years of his life for doing some ‘subtle’ but not too good things in his life. & the video is beautiful, with how it shows home movie clips of his life, & continuously goes back to his fragile older self, singing. BRAVO JOHNNY CASH BRAVO!
The craziest thing is how they don't change words but change meaning ENTIRELY
The thought of David Bowie and Kurt Cobain collaborating gave me chills
I would like to hear Stevie Nicks and Eddie Vedder.
Bowie & Jagger Dancing in the street
This the worst duo in the world ruined the block party anthem
There's a live performance of "Hurt" played by NIN and David Bowie. Reznor's trying to maintain his demeanor for the song, but every time Bowie takes over for vocals, Trent tries (and fails) to hide the fact that he's grinning ear to ear because he's on stage with Bowie.
I always thought “I Love Rock and Roll” was written by Joan Jett. She owned that song. Never fails to get you to turn it up!
Ngl I thought they wrote this song first
The first time I heard that this was a cover I didn't believe it. Joan Jett and I love Rock and Roll just went together. It's like Aretha Franklin and Respect. No remembers or mentions the originals except for geeks who are into music trivia.
@Nick Xanthopoulos I Love Rock and Roll was originally done by an English group called The Arrows.
czcams.com/video/8AT_Pbtyid0/video.html
I THOUGHT IT WAS. A JOAN JETT ORIGINAL 2 MY MIND WAS LITERALLY BLOWN
@@jennifervaughan1003 same here, crazy! I literally had no idea
I read an article awhile back where Bob Dylan said the All along the Watchtower wasn't his song it was Jimi's song because he took it and made it better than he ever imagined it could be.
Steven Burks Trent Reznor said the same thing about Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt".
That is how Paul Simon complimented David Draimain's version of Sound of Silence. Isn't it great when writers bestow that honor to cover Musicians?
Watchtower is the greatest cover of all time, not Hurt.
I love when musicians do that. That's respecting the art above ego's.
Joe Cocker's version of "A little Help from my friends" and Chris Cornell's version of "Nothing Compares 2 U" are my faves after Cash's "Hurt"
Cocker is the master of covers. The Letter is one of his best. First we take Manhattan is also good. And With a little help….
I liked Chris Cornell's take on "Patience"
Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah has become pretty damn iconic, but his cover of Lilac Wine was also stunning. It's interesting that Jeff is often not really considered rock, but had he lived it was clear his releases were about to veer into very punk-experimental.
one of my all time favorite quotes comes from when Trent Reznor was asked how he felt about Cash covering his song, he responded 'It's not my song anymore."
Must've been quite an honor 😊
Heart, Ann and Nancy Wilson, a serious band including John Bonham's son on the drums with choir covering Zep's Stairway To Heaven for the Kennedy Center Honors. Simply amazing and moved Robert Plant to tears and got Jimmy Page into such a groove...probably the BEST cover I've ever heard from anyone. Just an absolute work of art.
Good call
Absolutely!!! I have watched that video so many times because of how amazing it is. I also love how the backup singers near the end of the song are all wearing the same hat that John Bonham wore back in the day. This version of Stairway To Heaven is easily the best cover ever.
You're talking about Ann Wilson. How could it not be awesome?
Actually pretty much any of Hearts Zep covers. And while we’re on Heart, the Alice in Chains cover of Heart’s Barracuda is incredible.
TRUTH
My 2 fave covers are HIM's cover of Chris Isaac's "Wicked Game" and Tool's cover of Led Zeppelin's "No Quarter."
Shinedown's version of "Simple Man"
Is absolutely incredible. Im kind of surprised to not see it on this list
It’s good but I feel the original is far superior plus it’s a bit too heavy for Simple Man in my humble opinion.
i could of went my whole life without knowing miley cyrus did a nirvana cover
Same here. That stupid bitch should just quit singing altogether.
Dang. So.very.true. Ugh. 🤢
@@victorstoker8790 they can hate it if they want too. They may even suggest you do what you suggested they do.
My life is ruined now
Right? And been just as happy and content!
I remember I showed my father the Guns cover of Knockin' on Heaven's Door, and he had this just cringing, disappointed look on his face, like it was genuinely the most uncomfortable thing he'd ever experienced. And it probably was, he was big into Bob Dylan. I got him Dylan's album Tempest, he always said he didn't need christmas presents from us and told me to just get him chocolate, but I always got him something. I don't regret it, he loved that album, and he loved the new Deep Purple too. But just in 2015, he passed, and I realised why he always said not to get him christmas presents. His heart was failing.
I'm glad I spent some time with him before that. Remember dudes, you gotta spend time with your elders, before it's too late. It don't matter what you think of them, you'll regret missing that closure later.
"Let us not talk falsely now: The hour's getting late."
Yeah, I wasn't much of a fan of the Guns and Roses version. I much preferred the cover by Warren Zevon on his last album, The Wind.
terrible song....I hate this, even the shitty original.
Sorry for your loss. I too bonded over music with my dad. He was less into rock though, more into pop. One of the last times I got to talk to him before, ya know, I played Ridin' Thumb by Three Dog Night for him. He loved Three Dog Night.
Truer words have not been spoken...so sorry for your loss. I lost my mother when I was 2 and only met my father once when I was 10. Believe me not having closure will never let you go.
I don't like gnr's version. I like Clapton's version.
Nirvanas unplugged cover of "Where did you sleep last night" will always be my favorite cover with "Hurt" by Johnny Cash a very close runner up
as good as the cover of Man who Sold the World is, i think Where did you sleep last night was just better, hands down.
I love their cover they did of Lake of Fire
Pretty much poached from Mark Lanagan..
@@omind1 so they're both Leadbelly fans. Still prefer Kurt's version
Agreed. I love Leadbelly, but Nirvana’s version is haunting and raw.
I honestly prefer Bowie’s version of the man who sold the world, but I’m a sucker for all things Bowie and probably not being impartial though.
I personally prefer Land of Confusion over Sound of Silence for Disturbed, but making that choice is not something I enjoy doing since they are so vastly different and yet are both so amazing. I also just feel like mentioning Bad Company from Five Finger Death Punch as one of the best covers just because it feels so right in their style
Everything by Disturbed is like hot garbage.
I agree with Bad Company from FFDN being a great cover too!
That Land of Confusion cover is excellent
I like Five Finger Death Punch's take on "Gone Away"
I agree prefer Land of Confusion as a cover
Joe Cocker "With a little help from my friends" should be on this list. Also Gary Jules "Mad World" cover should at least be an honorable mention.
Wow! That reminded me of The Letter. Should have put that on my list above.
Feelin Alright is my fave Joe Cocker cover
It should! Joe Cocker won Woodstock with that cover.
NiN: " Wow we couldnt have done this song any better." Johnny Cash: "Hold my beer."
And he did it with health issues that were actually starting to effect his voice
@@shanethebrownwolf5575 I feel like the sound of his voice being weaker added to the song. You can really feel his emotion come out in it.
That's gold! 🤣
Johnny Cash covered Depeche Mode's Personal Jesus and other rock songs.
NIN Verison was about a young man struggling with self harm and drug addiction Cash's is about an old man dying and wanting redemption
I feel like the Alien Ant Farm hate is just a meme at this point, especially considering the very first entry on the list was then Guns 'n Roses.
New Hope's Black or White is a better Jackson cover
Can't believe you didn't mention Type O Negative. Every single cover they did they completely transformed the song into their own style, and personally I consider them the benchmark for what a good cover is.
their cover of Black Sabbath kicks so much ass
Tool's cover of Led Zeppelin's No Quarter is hauntingly good.
Agreed
Same with You Lied
i remember seeing a comment on the video of tools version "only tool could take a 7:30 minute song and make it 11:30"
Tool's cover of Comfortably Numb.
Luke Is God Except Zeppelin made their live versions up to 45 minutes.
That Simpsons Grammy clip will never get old.
Aiko Yumi ...oh, it's a Grammy. 😥
There's a ton of great covers. Dream Theater did entire albums at a time. Here's a few I like: Pantera - Planet Caravan (Black Sabbath), Metal Church - Highway Star (Deep Purple) , Dream Theater - Take your fingers from my hair (Zebra), Metallica - Turn the Page (Bob Segar) , Slayer - Dissident Aggressor (Judas Priest) , Judas Priest - Green Manalishi (Fleetwood Mac), Aerosmith - Come Together (The Beatles), Red Hot Chili Peppers - Higher Ground (Stevie Wonder), Shinedown - Simple Man (Lynyrd Skynyrd).
Death - painkiller (judas priest)
Johnny B Goode covered by The Metal Gods, Juddas Priest. They put their own stamp on one of the greatest rock classics while staying true to the original.
@@gabeellsworth9027 I love some Death but the Painkiller cover was uh....pretty cringey lol
Here's another good cover song
Cry me a River ( Aerosmith)
Something ( Helloween)
The Man Who Sold The World was a fitting cover for Nirvana. Kurt had the whole world in his hand by the time that cover happened and the fact that he ended his life to get away from it is chilling. He sold the world by killing himself. It was almost a suicide letter.
Chris Cornell covering "Nothing Compares to You" (Prince) should've been on that list with Pearl Jam's "Last Kiss"... 🤔
This is correct
Last kiss was first done J Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers, in 1964.
The original version of Last Kiss is best
Or Cornell’s Patience cover
chris cornell's cover of billie jean is also great
The Power Station - "Get it On (Bang a Gong)" - absolutely brilliant cover with an energy T-Rex never put into it, and Taylor's guitar tone is killer!
I liked the original too.
I concur while the original is cool let’s face it power station absolutely owned it … not bd for a band that’s half Duran Duran 1/4 chic and some guy named Robert palmer(I know who he is.. )
I am so happy "When the Levee Breaks" made this list. It's so underrated. Thank you for showing it love!
Rather than telling you that you missed someone, I respect the list you've made and all of these covers are super solid
Quiet Riot left out? They set hair metal in overdrive in the mainstream with Cum On Feel The Noize, a Slade original from 1973.
I remember an interview with Kevin DuBrow saying he was insulted that the record company contract required them to record both C'mon feel the noize and Mama we're all crazy now as part of a two album deal. He didn't want to be a Slade cover band just because they thought he sounded like Noddy, and he felt it was wasting tracks when they had plenty of originals to record, but that was the deal, no Slade covers, no record deal. Good for us though!
oasis cover was also very good IMHO and for a chuckle the shirehorses cum on skweeze me boils
They phoned in the entire performance and didn't want to do it. They managed to succeed when they were trying to fail.
@@Dave-Rough-Diamond-Dunn Still think the Slade versions were better.
That is a fantastic cover
Honorable mention: Blinded by the Light (Manfred Mann) and Higher Ground (Red Hot Chili Peppers)
Blinded by the Light should have been on the list.
Absolutely missing Mannfred Mann here. Lots of crazy good covers, mostly from Dylan, but their rendition of Springsteen's Blinded by the Light is just superb.
Yep Manfred Mann's Blinded by The Light is awesome and should be on this list. However, Bruce Springsteen's version of his own song is horrible!
Manfred Mann’s cover of Blinded By The Light by Bruce Springsteen is incredible. Black Crowes’s cover of Hard To Handle is awesome, and Jeff Buckley’s Hallelujah is beautiful
I always liked Manfred Mann´s covers of Joan Armatrading´s "Visionary Mountains" and Bob Dylan´s "Father of Day, Father of Night". Jimi Hendrix´s cover of "Like a rolling Stone" at the Monterey Pop Festival 1967 is iconic.
You have named three of the very best covers. I'm a Jersey Girl currently living in PA from Monmouth County. Manfred Mann's Blinded By The Light is a worthy cover of our local boy's song. Nobody has equaled Jeff Buckley's version of Hallelujah.(except perhaps the author)
I love Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah!!
personally, Social Distortion's cover of Johnny Cash's "Ring Of Fire" takes the crown, with Jane's Addiction's cover of the Grateful Dead's "Ripple" placing a strong second.
I don't know that the cover of Ring of Fire is better than the original. But they truly did a great job of covering it with giving it their own sound while paying homage to the original.
Some of my favorite covers? Well, there's RHCP's "Higher Ground", Counting Crows' "Big Yellow Taxi", Soft Cell's "Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go", and the Bangles' "Hazy Shade of Winter". Also, don't expect a lot of people to agree with me on this, but I LOVE No Doubt's "It's My Life".
ND's It's My Life is absolutely great.
JudaiKitsune I can't believe I forgot about the Counting Crows when thinking of cover songs
The No Doubt It’s My Life has a permanent spot on my workout playlist
Johnny sang Hurt not long after June had passed... I've always felt he poured his heart into the song and let his hurt at losing June flow through
June is in the video, they both passed the following year... her in may, him in september...
jelleebean thank you.
Johnny had the life experience where the original lyrics and meaning behind the song weren't lost on him. It didn't feel like he was simply performing another artists song. But was retelling his story with a song that deeply resonated with him.
I’m sorry, but GnR’s cover of “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” is nails on a fucking chalkboard for me. Axl’s “Hey! Hey! Hey-ay-aow!” quite literally murders the only Bob Dylan song I like. Fight me.
The 2002 version with the BH solo is probably more to your liking. Look up the Boston 2002 or rock n rio 3 version
I hate it too and I love Bob Dylan and G'N'R
I skip it on my GNR album, I like Bobs better
My favorite Metallica cover is actually Turn the Page. That cover was a masterpiece
"While My Guitar Gently Weeps" - Prince, Petty, Lynne, D. Harrison and friends, oh my!!!
Dude Petty may have sang it but Prince on guitar really took it to a whole new level. Prince was a very underrated guitarist
Great performance
Johnny Cash's version of Hurt will always make me cry, it's such a good cover.
The Black Crowes cover of "Hard To Handle". Also, I personally love Halestorm's cover of Whitesnake's "Still of the Night" (Lzzy Hale is AMAZING in everything she does IMO...)
Or "Black Velvet" cover by Kobra and the Lotus.....
Hendrix said it best: "Watchtower is a song that I would have started to write, but would have had no idea how to finish. There lies the genius of Dylan".
I didn't know that I Love Rock And Roll was a cover.
John Koch Not a lot of people did.
Yeah, me neither. I wonder if that's saying something about the original, that the cover caught on better.
Depends upon where you lived. During the 70's glam metal was big in Britain not so elsewhere so a few artists were able to get hits in the US by covering them.
John Koch there's a number songs attributed to Joan Jett that are cover songs:
I love Rock-N-Roll
Do you wanna touch me
Dirty deeds done dirt cheap
Cherry bomb
Have you ever seen the rain
Love hurts
Neither did I
Johnny Cash’s cover of NIN’s “Hurt” is amazing and very hair raising because it fits his life story perfectly.
Disturbed honestly could've made it just as a cover band. They have so many good covers and sound of silence is amazing
Thank god they still decided to make their own songs
Along the Watchtower is amazing! I never connected with Dylan's version. One of my favorite songs ever
Listen to the version of XTC!
Yep. If your a acid rocker that's it!
Trent Reznor said after hearing Johnny Cash’s version that the song belonged to him now.
and he's right. love NIN version but Cash's is just........ :O
I think NIN original version is way better.
@@mitch6160 how old are you?
@@crhu319 old enough
I believe both have equal merit, and this is from someone who had bootleg posters of Trent Reznor on her walls in high school, hahaha.
Faith No More had pretty good covers of Easy and War Pigs (Mike Patton is a pretty underrated vocalist IMO)
I don't think he's really underrated
Faith no more is just overlooked
Their cover of easy gets more radio play every time I hear it out at the store I listen for the “ew” just before the solo 😂
Easy should be on this list.
I Started A Joke?
Yeah definitely underrated. Great vocalist. Freddie Mercury like.
John Cash's Rusty Cage could have been in the #1 spot too! Great cover by a legendary artist!
Personal Jesus cover by Johnny Cash is another one
I enjoy quite a few of Marilyn Manson's covers. Does them well imo.
Van Halen's cover of "You Really Got Me." That is all.
EmperorTigerstar I see you Tigerstar, love your work.
Stupid
i liked oh pretty woman by van halen
ya half decent cover in my books
@@orcatwar9810 your books are completely wrong. Foh.
I'm surprised you didn't mention how much Reznor praised the cover of Hurt. Basically stating that it was no longer his song, it was now completely and utterly Cash's. I have never heard another artist give anywhere near the praise for another person's take on their own work that Reznor gave. Except maybe someone who Weird Al parodied, but that's really the other side of the spectrum.
Noddy Holder said that he thought Quiet Riot's version of Cum On Feel the Noize was better than Slade's.
Eric Clapton, upon hearing Skynyrd's cover of Crossroads, and especially Allen Collins' solo, reportedly said "Man- that's how I should have done that!"
i remember hearing about how the beatles liked joe cokers version of "with a little help of my friends" better than their own.
David Joyce, Johnny influenced so many artists of every genre. In a room of 100 musicians, I'd say 95 of them would list Johnny as an influence. I'm pretty sure Reznor would have been in that group.
Another one about Johnny was from Sheryl Crow, she said the highest honor in her whole life was having Johnny cover her song and the fact that he wanted to make sure she liked what he did was one of the most humbling experiences.
Devo's cover of "Satisfaction" -- successfully turned it into something completely different.
"Hurt" is my go-to example when people question my belief that there are plenty of rock/metal and country songs that you could easily swap genres on and anyone who didn't know it was a cover already would be none the wiser.
Marilyn Manson - Sweet Dreams!
He completely transformed the song
Honorable mentions:
- Nonpoint's cover of "in the air tonight"
- Marilyn Manson's cover of "sweet dreams"
- Metallica's cover of "turn the page" or "53rd&3rd" or "stone cold crazy", or "remember tomorrow"
- Disturbed's cover of "shout" or "sound of silence"
- RATM's cover of "kick out the jams" (political opinions aside)
- Shinedown's cover of "simple man"
- FFDP's cover of "bad company"
- Godsmack's cover of "good times bad times"
- KORN's cover of "another brick in the wall"
Life of Agony - Don't you forget about me
Devil you know - Holy Diver
Tool- No Quarter or You Lied
Check out Korn's cover of the song Creep by Radiohead
Deftones' cover of Simple Man is worlds better than Shinedown's. Check it out. Steph nailed the solo.
@That Boy T Lynyrd Skynyrd my dude! A fucking tremendous song from both artists. Shinedown did themselves proud with their cover.
Jolene-The White Stripes is a pretty awesome cover of a Dolly Parton song.
Man, thanks for this kind of videos. Your love for music is clear and you transmit that to your audience. You reminded how my dad, during my teenage years on the 90s, tried to explain me why ELP, Alan Parson's Project or Camel were great bands. Listening you, reminded me that. Greetings from Chile.
Black Crows cover of Otis Redding’s Hard to Handle.
The Commitments version was around the same time, my band's version was somewhere inbetween.
Never even knew it was a cover till recently... that to me makes a good cover
Great call on your part. Fantastic cover!!
I thought it was a greatfull dead cover. I guess that makes sense
A little disappointed that SRV’s version of Little Wing isn’t on here. That song oozes emotion and gives me chills every time.
Skid Row did a great version of it on their B-Side album. Not better than the original. But still a great performance.
One of my all time favorites is Deftones doing The Cure - If Only Tonight We Could Sleep
That MTV icons performance was something transcendent... My favorite band, doing my favorite song, live, to the band that created it.... That's probably my favorite moment in music, ever
Speaking of The Cure…I always dug Dinosaur Jr.’s cover of “Just Like Heaven”. Maybe not one of the best covers ever, but definitely worth a nod, IMO.
I think this is the first time I have ever seen a top ten list that I totally agree with....well done! An honorable mention to Ugly Kid Joe for Cat's In the Cradle.
Lemonheads - Mrs Robinson?
Manfred Mann's "Blinded By The Light". No one even knew Springsteen recorded it, Mann's version was infinitely better.
Agreed
Springsteen wrote the song. Manfred Mann did the cover.
I figured that would one of the top three
yep. for him to dig all the way back to the beetles. BBTL was an awesome cover and should have been here. I bought the album when it was released in ...1977 I believe. Robby the robot cover.
Maybe no one could hear Springstein lyrics when he sang it? Yes, I do like Bruce's talents, and eventually I'm in for a nice surprise when I can read the lyrics and relate.
Hurt by Johnny Cash , blows me away. It gives me pangs in my heart.
And his gritty voice and the pain he puts into the song via his voice... If you don't tear up or feel it, you gotta be heartless.
I must agree. Not a fan of NIN or Johny Cash. But this is just killer.
Long Live The Man In Black.
I loved the song before Cash covered it, but there's no denying that he totally crushed it. It's too damn good.
Lola Grant A song sung by a dying man....that’s the way I look at it and it always leaves me with chills and a lump in my throat
TOOL's cover of Led Zeppelin's 'No Quarter' is AMAZING!
I'll give two covers: Van Halen's cover of "You Really Got Me" and Devo's cover of "I Can't Get No Satisfaction". All in all, though, great list. The covers of "The Sound Of Silence" and "Hurt" in particular are powerful.
Here's one: Donnie Darko soundtrack has a cover of Tears for Fears 'Mad World'.
Wait....was "Mad World" a Tears For Fears original? Or were they covering it too?
@@JennaLeigh they were covering it
czcams.com/video/4N3N1MlvVc4/video.html
Jenna Leigh's Beauty Slam Yes Tears for Fears wrote and recorded the song in 82. Gary Jules covered it for Donnie Darko (great flick) ✌🏽️
Richard Tenison Ummm...No. Tears for Fears wrote and recorded the song in 82. Gary Jules covered it for Donnie Darko much later
The list is *Best* covers, not overrated covers. Imo the Tears For Fears version is so much better than Gary Jules version.
I think the thing with Cash's cover is that: One, it's Johnny *FREAKING* Cash. Two, the song was already really good before Cash covered it. Three, I thoroughly believe he knew that he was close to dying, and he put that soul and feeling into the recording. Four, the points you made about the speed and volume staying consistent. And five, Cash was such an intimate acoustic guitar player for what he played, in that he made people feel like they were the ones in the song, that having it be mainly acoustic driven gave it (to me) a real universal feeling to the song.
TLDR: Cash was great, the song was great, and the two put together lead to the best cover in all of rock.
Loved the video but I just wished you had mentioned Thin Lizzie also covered Whiskey in the Jar when you were talking about Metallica's version of the song. I also love that version of the song.
He did.
Personally, I love Kiss' version of "God Gave Rock And Roll To You", but whether or not it's considered better than Argent's original version, I would say yes, but then again, Kiss' version was the first I had ever heard. Anyway, it would have made my list if I were to make one. That's just me though.
Forgot about that one. Good choice.
Personally I think Disturbed's cover of Land of Confusion is better than their cover of Sound of Silence, but both are good
CTheRevillusionS In Flames also did a cover Of that song and they did it better for me
Muck Meh I'm personally not a fan of In Flames's vocals, but to each his own I guess
Well, I mean in terms of picking someone else song and deliver it their own way, I think In Flames did better, Disturbed didnt do anything different than the original... But yeah nust my opinion
Agreed
I agree, I expected Land of Confusion.
Joe Cocker's cover of the Beatles "A Little Help From My Friends" definitely fits in here. Johnny Cash and Disturbed definitely deserve to be here though. Johnny Cash was my 4th cousin, but no, I never got to meet "The Man In Black."
"She Came in Through the Bathroom Window". Joe did so well with covers.
Oh shit, good call on that one...
“As emotional as when Sephiroth kills Aerith!”.....I hollered! 😂😂😂 damn dude, I was trying to have a good day! 😔😔😔😂😂😂
Take me to the river by talking heads.
Its what a cover should be.. a different take on the original.. not just a copy. And the live performances are amazing
I seriously had no idea Joan Jett's "I Love Rock and Roll" was a cover song.
She did nothing but cover songs. Got her into the RRHOF. Was it deserving? That is highly debatable.
Deftones cover of The Cures "If Only Tonight We Could Sleep" is a masterpiece, and there arent many artists out there who could improve on a Cure song.
Im gnna have to check that one out. That sounds cool
Deftones do a lot of good covers.
When I saw the title I thought of "Hurt". Well done sir.
I know this video is crazy old and probably hasn’t had a comment posted in over a year but I wanted to put two cents in for the record. Red House Painter’s covering Paul McCartney’s “Silly Love Songs”. Mark Kozelek transformed this song into an amazingly haunting love song. My absolute favorite cover.
Judas Priest cover of Joan Baez's - Diamonds and Rust is a great cover and they have 2 versions of the song one hard and the other soft.
Mike Parker their version of the green manalishi and better by you better than me rock also \m/
@@EricMossthestrongmanexperience Agreed
They have like 4 versions at this point. There's the original hard and fast cover from Sin After Sin, their version that goes more along with the original instrumentation, their live version that only reprises around the last chorus from around the 2000s and the version where the heavy reprise comes around the middle. They're all fantastic.
@@emigrant1510 IMO, the Epitaph tour version is the best so far.
@@nwcrawford I love it the most too.
Wicked game - Him
Boys of summer - The Ataris
Cry little sister - Seasons After
3 days grace cover of wicked games is legit too
Seasons After! 🔥
Boys of Summer is one of my favorite 80s songs over and I fully give props to ataris for their version.
honestly all of hims covers bring something special to the song
Immediately started scrolling down the comment section looking for someone to mention boys of summer
1 & 2 are completely interchangeable in position imho. Outstanding list
Glad you included Landslide-better than the original. The only person who can cover Smells Like Teen Spirit is Tori Amos. Other good covers that come to mind:
Yes-America (Simon)
Indigo Girls-Tangled Up In Blue (Dylan)
NIN-Get Down Make Love (Queen)
Wilco-Any Major Dude (Steely Dan)
Paul Young-Soldiers Things (Waits)
Julian Cope-I Have Always Been Here (Rocky Erikson)
Cornershop- Norwegian Wood (Beatles)
Siouxie & Banshees - Dear Prudence
Electronic-Can't Find My Way Home (Traffic)
Bauhaus-Ziggy Stardust
U2-Night and Day
Jack White-Love Is Blindness
Laibach-Get Back
As far as I know, the video for Hurt was one of the last things Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash were in together. From what I understand the museum they filmed in has since burned down, just to add an even sadder touch to something already so sad.
When June passed, Johnny was not long in following. Yes, you can argue he was older when he died, this is true, but you cannot convince me that he died from anything other than a broken heart.
Johnny's son and daughter have spoken on his and June's death, they were pretty much agreed that although Johnny was in really poor health, he would not let go because June was still alive. They believe June passed first to allow Johnny to follow and have peace, so you're not far wrong! 👍
June died first? I always thought that Johnny was the first to go, then June passed within a matter of months. I guess I was wrong.
@@BlindRobotDragon Though it is true that June died first, had the order been reversed, one would still probably not have lasted long without the other.
@@reiterated You're not the first one to say that. The few people I've heard talk about this in the past basically said the same thing. I got the order of who passed first wrong, obviously, but I guess the rest of it was spot-on.
as far as our boys in METALLICA i would vote for 'AM I EVIL?' before any of their other covers.
i would go with "the prince" just because the performance of it is so ridiculously tight.
Damn good cover
I agree i love that cover
Stone cold crazy!
@Tom Ffrench damn right I luv diamond heads: lighting of the nations album. But I do want metallica to cover sucking my love and the title track just to finish the album off
The APC cover is great, but Tool's cover of "No Quarter" is unreal!
I have to give props Where they're due. Bro you at least seem to know music. You're not just "a fan" you genuinely seem to care about what goes in your ears. Thumbs up brother.
Surprised killswitch engaged's holy diver isn't on the list
I'm surprised it took me this long to scroll and find this suggested......great song, great cover.
Yes they did justice Dio would be proud
Damn I had never heard that cover but that is badass. Love Dio's version but I definitely approve of this cover.
Right!!! That was a solid fucking cover.
Agreed!
Jeff Healy’s cover of While My Guitar Gently Weeps. That is my favourite Beatles song and Jeff nailed the cover version. I almost like it more than the original. Almost.
I love Jeff Healey
You sound check out the tribute version fine by prince, Tom petty, Steve winwood and George Harrison Jr
Evanescence did a good live cover of Across the Universe, speaking of Beatles covers. I think I'd be willing to violate my "don't cover the Beatles" rule to buy an Evanescence studio version of Across the Universe, but that might be because Amy Lee's hauntingly beautiful voice can basically sing anything and make it great.
or his rendition of "Stuck in the middle with you"....or "Hoochie Coochie Man"
I remember when Nirvana came out with this cover. So I was born in 1970 and really was a huge fan of David Bowie and His music, history everything.
I was also in my twenties when Nirvana covered this song. I remember being out and some teens where talking and one piped up all full of courage and said," did you know David Bowie covered this song" how naively sweet. I leaned in gently and whispered "Nirvana covered David Bowie" and have him a kind wink. I wanted him to not look foolish if he went on thinking this, but I wanted him to know I approved that he, all of 15 at best, knew who David Bowie was 💗 he just blushed and nodded with a shy smile.
"Sound of Silence" by Disturbed is arguable one of the best covers in Heavy Metal
Number one definitely is the correct answer, and my personal list would have Devo's cover of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction", and Nirvana's cover of "Where Did You Sleep Last Night".
Devo's Satisfaction actually sounds the part of an un-ironic delivery (and Devo usually LIVES in a zone of hyper-irony) of those lyrics. The Rolling Stones' version? Unless the delivery IS supposed to be ironic, I never quite got it. If the delivery wasn't supposed to be ironic, its a good taste of The Stones musicianship, but that's about it. They're singing from the perspective of a guy who's desperate for either sex or general contentment and the singer sounds more content than they do on Brown Sugar or Sympathy for the Devil.
Devo version best video ever.
Nirvana has a ton of good covers to choose from.
You totally missed Seether's version of Careless Whisper.
D Carte Yup. So good.
Absolutely
And shinedowns cover of simple man
@@arnaldoagosto3005 imagine my surprise when I'm driving the streets of greater Boston when Mistress Carrie manages to get Shinedown to play that.. and the rest as they say.. is history
No he didn't Seether is terrible
The Ataris cover of Don Henleys "Boys of Summer," should be on this list.
Prefer that to the original version! Great cover :)
Great point.
A pop punk classic
Was going to post this myself. Awesome cover.
That’s my favourite cover of all time!
That piano throughout Johnny cash's album is so simplistic, but unbelievably powerful.
you can hear all the pain and years in johnnys voice in 'hurt', his voice made that cover
A lot of comments adding a lot of great covers that were missed. I’ll add to it. Muse. Feeling Good.
For me the best led zep cover is Maynards other band Tool and their version of No Quarter off the album Salival
Stone Sour's covers of Eddie Van Halen's Unchained and RATM's Bombtrack will always be some of my favorite covers in rock
Everytime I listen to Johnny Cash's version of Hurt, i cry. When i listen to NIN's version, it makes me feel nostalgic and sad. Don't know why, but that's true : it brings you different feelings although that's the same song. It seems like their way of singing it brings you mixed feelings.
I feel like its because in Johnny's version its a man basically putting it out there knowing his life is done that he wont be with us much longer. where I feel like the NIN version is almost like an apology for what has been done. I could be totally wrong here as im not much of an interpreter but its just how the two songs feel to me.
I believe Chris Cornell's cover of, "Nothing Compares 2 You" should be on this list
his cover of "one" by u2 with the lyrics from "one" by metallica is pretty clever and well done.
@@antichristian74 another great cover is johnny Cash song, "God will cut you down," by Marilyn Manson. I think he did that version justice.
Like a stone while not a cover should be on the list. As should my song " How Much is It".
Oh shit, I literally JUST wrote the SAME comment lol why wasn't "Last Kiss" by Pearl Jam on this by the way?
Overwhelmed is the correct way to describe Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt". I didn't think it would be worth listening to when I saw the beginning of the video for the first time, but when he sang that first verse , I ate my words.
I wasn't expecting the #1. Should have, but I wasn't. And I had to pause the video because I immediately started tearing up.
