  • Charles Foster turns out the lights at Granada towers - a rather nice gradient blind motif seems to be in vogue in 87.

    Willie Rushton hamming it up for Vimto.
    This is from Wednesday 5th August 1987, with 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes' ending at the start - it was being shown to mark a quarter of a century since Marilyn Monroe died. I know how old I've made certain people feel there ...

    One of the last appearances, I believe, of a twin-border clock on Granada - they had used at least five (including this one) since the mid-1970s.
    By the autumn of '87, they had replaced the borders with 3D-looking hour markers (although the hands remained 2D).

    On screen clocks were shown for a little over a minute at close down on Granada Television during the closedown sequence and once the black raster came on we received the obligatory message not to forget about switching the television off and as a fire precaution pulling out the plug. An electronic test signal image (accompanied by a tone no music) appears prior to the transmitters being switched off for a couple of hours.

    Ever since I first saw this video, I've been curious about Vimto. It sounds pretty good! (I live in the United States, though.)

    I love that piece of Music. I remember it so well as Granada was my regional TV Station growing up in the 80s. Do you know when was the last time they played it to closedown? Do you know if The Lovely Sue Robbie did a Closedown with The Music?

    No National Anthem? Is the answer it was 'Granada Land', mmm?

    • @nowster
      @nowster Před rokem

      Granada never played the national anthem at closedown. I suppose they might have if there had been a royal death or similar, but they were running 24h by the time of Diana's.
