This is so weird, I was having lunch in the cafe at the Metropole Hotel (seen at the beginning) on the day this was filmed, but not being from Belgium I had no idea who the singer was. I’ve been searching for this video for years, but no luck until now. I watched Eurovision and I really liked Hooverphonic, so I thought I’d check out the other videos, and THIS IS THE ONE I’VE BEEN SEARCHING FOR! 😀
A ~15 year old mystery cleared up!

This song has a wonderful, sweeping orchestral introduction which sounds just like it came from the 1960s....That is because it was lifted directly from a 1960s song with a wonderful, sweeping, introduction..."Young Man Cried" by The Walker Brothers!

Scoperti qualche anno fa grazie a "Anger never dies". Ho iniziato a "pedonarli" per capire dove stessero andando a parare e di recente ho iniziato a seguirli con continuità. Nel loro genere sono una band "curiosa" e creativa. Estremamente piacevoli da ascoltare.

How big were Hooverphonic exactly back in the day? Before 2020 I have heard of them, but couldn't mention one song of them. Their old singer has returned, and I must say it is for the better. She is much more iconic than the young girl who would've sang a year ago. I have also stumbled upon the due to Eurovision. Their song was classy, dark, smooth, mysterious. I really liked it. I still listen to it. This led me to discover more song of them. This made me realise they were around for quite some time.

I used to listen to them a lot as a kid around 1998-2005 (purists will say the band was already declining at that time). They were pretty successful in Belgium, I saw them in concert twice (back when Geike was the lead singer) it was always a great time, much more energetic than the more orchestral turn they took later on

@@theojacqmin5796 strangely enough I don't remember any of their early songs. This one doesn't ring a bell. Nor does Mad About You, which is I believe considered their biggest hit.
One thing I don't understand: why do they so often change their lead singer? This year the old lady (my age) was singing for them at Eurovision. Last year a young was going to sing for them at Eurovision.
I was watching a few interviews of them. The guy with the glasses and playing the piano and speaking continuesly. The others barely got a chance to say anything. Especially the lead singer. She had a very vacant look. It felt like she experienced this a lot of times with the piano player.

@@hasanordek I would say they were the most successful when Geike Arneart was the band’s lead singer (their first trip-pop oriented was recorded with the singer Esther Lybeert, who is relatively unknown nowadays). Then there was Noémie Wolfs, then another one, but I had already stopped listening to the band after « The President of the LSD Golf Club » that was their last okay album (for me)… now Geike is back ( that was her at the infamous 3 points Eurovision performance), but I really don’t know anything about the dynamics between the members of the trio… (and nooo she’s not an old lady poor thing 😭)

@@theojacqmin5796 she is a year older than me 😉. But I didn't know how to describe her. And older is not necessarily a bad thing. But she is older than the previous singer.
By the way, she wore her Johnny Cash t-shirt during the interview 😉.

@@hasanordek In Hooverphonic have passed 6 singers. The first was called Esther Lybeert, and left the group before the success. Then came Liesje Sadonius (the singer of the album "A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular"), and left the band two years later for personal problems. After her came Kyoko Baertsoen, but she was literally kicked out of the group because they've found Geike Arnaert at an audition. Geike stayed since 1997 to 2008, and abandoned the group because she wanted to start a solo career. Some years later arrived Noémie Wolfs, known for "Anger Never Dies", "The Night Before" and "Amalfi". 4 years later she left the group because the relationships among her and the group got worse. They became a duo and in 2018 arrived Luka Cruysberghs after her triumph at "The Voice of Flanders", where the leader of Hooverphonic was a coach. In 2020 she was practically kicked out and Geike Arnaert came back.
