    At first I thought I was getting involved with a hidden gem of a find.
    Then after about 5-10 mins, the unresponsive controls and merciless enemies quickly subdued any thought of such a thing. -

      @Nero It was a game being developed that couldn't get the license. So instead of wolverine, they made it a werewolf. But you see some of the bosses that look like juggernaut, magneto, pyro, etc.

    If you think about it, this is what an NES Wolverine game should have been like. The Werewolve attacks similar to Wolverine, there is a boss that looks like Juggernaut, a Boss that is like Quicksilver and Pyro had a baby and that last boss looked like a purple Magneto...

    • @LlorDrei
      @LlorDrei Před 4 lety +4

      And the enemies in the different stages that all say, "Oh!" all look as if they're wearing Hellfire Club mercenary uniforms. The ninja look like the Hand. The small brown creatures in Stage 5 look like the Brood. And not only does Dr. Faryan look like Magneto, but one of his powers is to draw in steel girders to his hand to throw at you. I honestly think this was supposed to be a Wolverine game, but because another Wolverine game was made, by another subsidiary Nintendo company, it wasn't. I think this game made by Data East would have been far superior to the Wolverine game made by LJN. Even though the Wolverine game was released after the Werewolf game, it was likely being created at the same time, so they had to make this a werewolf game to avoid problems.

    • @auralunaprettycure
      @auralunaprettycure Před 3 lety +1

      I totally agree!
      I am kinda glad it was its own original IP too, tho! Not to say that it wouldn't have made a badass X-men game, and yeah the series deserved one, the LJN developed stuff is... tragic.
      That said I'm just glad this game is an original IP because it had the added benefit of making the developers have so much more freedom on setting, character designs, atmosphere etc. and I love those elements of this game so much
      The only issue is due to receiving no sequels this game became kinda obscure. But I hope to see some fanworks of it someday, and maybe it on NES online

    • @Visaoturva
      @Visaoturva Před 2 lety +1

      My theory is that this game was supposed to be a Wolverine game, but Data East didn't get the copyright and decided to release the game with different characters and other names. The game has ALL the elements needed for a Wolverine quest:
      short stature hero,
      Iron Head = Juggernault,
      Fireman = Pyro,
      Dr. Faryan = Dr. Sinister,
      Last Boss = Magneto,
      Including ninjas (The Hand) and hellfire club soldiers (the ones who speak "OH").

  • @Schnitz1

    This game is really a mixed bag. There seems to be quite a deep backstory making you believe it's based on some movie. The music is absolutely stunning, the werewolf acrobatic movements and climbing abilitíes are awesome. Transforming to human and back is interesting and nice. On the other hand, the werewolf character could use some dithering, it looks quite dull. At the same time there are a lot of weird stuff going on. What's up with the boss fights with the bald guy that's not even trying to fight? The hit detection seems off. Why are those enemies saying "OH!" in text form? Signs saying "don't knock"... are those some kind of a joke? Weird powerups looking like bubbles, and so on.

It has vastly different level structures, to the point where it kinda seems like a different game or a difficulty-adjusted rerelease like Super Xevious (fun fact--according to the Cutting Room Floor website the Japanese version was released a year AFTER the USA version. Also strangely the JP version is easier. The electric barriers in area 1-3 don’t fire as often, there isn’t a pit of spikes at the beginning of area 1-2, and area 1-1 lacks falling rocks. Also I think the controls were inverted in the USA version, having B=jump and A=punch)

      Yeah, I remember playing this a good 20 years ago when I was 8 and raging so hard at how unfair the waterfall level was and resetting my Pegasus (Russian copy of NES) at 23:16 because I was scared shitless when the mentor character turned evil.
      Honestly seeing this Longplay and trying to replay this game now as an adult I see that the level design is very poor with a lot of cheap enemy placement (Piranhas at the waterfall level), levels when there's nothing to do (The building with lightning before 2nd boss), dead ends (At 14:32 if you continue you run into a spiked wall, as you normally would because no-one will jump into that hole on the first try) levels with enemy spam and like 7 bald man fights with are all the same thing over and over again.
      I still have a special place in my heart for this game, but it definitely didn't age well.

    The wolf icon on the bottom right that appears when you transform, reminds me of The Witcher.

    One of the things that annoyed me about this game was the strength of the monsters your attacks don't do much damage even if you become a werewolf

    congrats to JagOfTroy for passing one of my childhood fave games on the ol' NES, & one of the toughest on that system as well...to this very date, I can never make it past the beginning of the 4th level! 2 things I hope y'all notice: 1] most of the sound effects seem ripped fom Ninja Gaiden (Gawd, I hate that "game"), 2] the boss's music seems to be a slowed-down remix of the bosstune from the arcade version of Bloody Wolf...nice way of recyclin tunes there, Data East. a great game nonetheless.
