Often while selecting hair either using the quick selection tool or select and mask, no matter how contrasting the background is than the subject, no matter how flat the background is, when you create a mask of the selection, it leaves a thin white fringe around the hair which makes the composite in photo manipulation look fake.
It especially happens when your subject is originally captured in a bright background and you cut her hair out and put her on a dark background. The thing is, hair is very thin, it takes on the color of the background. So, supposing your subject is captured with a white background, the subject's hairs will take in that white color and hence will make it difficult for you to put her in a black background. Though, it will work very well with a bright background like the sky.
