  • Throughout the years, every survivalist and prepper has heard tons of different claims and statements made about the capabilities of the 22 long rifle. Let's sort out the fact from the fiction and discuss how the realities of the 22lr cartridge will actually work for us in a survival situation.
    I share my thoughts and experiences regarding the commonly repeated 22lr myths. We start with the lethality discussion as the cartridge has been considered by many to be not capable of lethal or self-defense use. We then get into some of the outlandish claims that people make about 22lr such as, "It's been used in more murders than any other cartridge," and so on. Finally, we discuss a 22lr LEGEND, Bella Twin, and where her crazy experience fits in with the 22lr for SHTF debate. Comment down below, pimps! 🥳

    My neighbor is a 70 year old woman, she was attacked by a mountain lion in her driveway. She stopped it with a .22 LR.
    She shot it 10 times, the shot that put it down is the one that got between the ribs, and punctured it's lung and heart. Other than that one shot, the other nine did no life threatening damage.

    Stone cold pimping 22LR video, thank you. Now, let me be up front, I love 22LR and my 617 is still going strong after 32 years but it is not a primary cartridge for SHTF. Y'all can disagree but that is my take on the subject. IF and only IF I could have one firearm for SHTF then maybe. Idunno. Lot's of other variables going into that equation above and beyond the cartridge. Two firearms, then yes, absolutely. Keep the excellent content coming. Much appreciated.

    I’m a big fan of .22LR for game hunting personally. BUT if you’re talking noise report reduction, .22LR with a nice suppressor can’t be beat as far as firearms for hunting. Setup correctly, all you’ll hear is the action cycling and it’s good out to 200yd MAX. Where .22LR falls very short is reliability across the board. I’ve used everything from cheap af thunderbolt ammo all the way to CCI match rounds and have had failures from every brand used at some point or another. For me in a serious SHTF scenario where all your animals are dead, no more meat being produced on the farm at all etc…..22LR would not be what I grab to get that job done when my family is hungry and desperate. Imagine you’re out there and you spot a deer inside 200yds with a .22lr on you and you have a miss fire and the deer’s gone. I would’ve really been wishing I had my .300WinMag in that moment that has never misfired once. For day to day when I’m harvesting for surplus and not need, .22LR is awesome. But if it came down to it in desperation….something else is probably wiser of a choice.

    Eh, I'm more a fan of 22 wmr than 22lr, But I'll admit 22lr makes for a decent utility cartridge.
    Just a decent low power cartridge that's quite plentiful and not all that loud, That can be used when a larger caliber would be wasted.
    But it's far from a primary caliber in the shtf scenario. Tertiary maybe, Although that's just my rambling way of looking at it.

  • @user-ci2mn1oy3w
    @user-ci2mn1oy3w Před 3 měsíci

    The Army says 60 ft lbs or the piercing of a (real, not 3/4") 1" thick pine board is "minimally lethal". They established that with a .25ACP, which has often failed to pierce the temple on suicide attempts. I personally know of a case where a .32 PPK failed, too. The guy had to have a bunch of his temple-bone removed, but he was ok. There's a HUGE difference in performance between a 22lr RIFLe barrel, 120 ft lbs and the 70 ft lbs you get from a 3" pistol barrel. Stingers up that to 160 ft lbs from a rifle barrel, but dont increase power at all from a short pistol barrel barrel. Regular "high speed" 22lr is subsonic, sub 1000 fps from a pistol barrel that's 6" or shorter. The blunt, soft lead 22lr bullet loses velocity swiftly. What it will do from a rifle at 5 ft (ie, pierce the forehead of a big beef bull) and what it will do at 50m (wont reliably pierce the temple) varies a lot. Do NOT expect a 22lr to penetrate a man's forehead from a shorty barreled pistol, at a mere 6 ft, because it often will not. Youoll have to hit the eye sockets, sinus cavities, or the medully, after piercing the teeth.

    I think the myth that 22 LR has taken out more people than any other cartridge, is because the people making the claim are looking at the year the cartridge came out in 1887 and the fact that it has been cheap and affordable for almost everyone. They look at those facts and just decide that it has taken out the most people even though there is no proof

Ammo is a bit more obviously but not too bad. I picked up two 125rd boxes of cci 40gn jhp today for $55. Actually plan on doing some testing tomorrow of those 40gn jhp magnums against the 32gn cci stinger for the lr. I’ve actually never shot the stinger over the chronograph so I’m going to find out tomorrow. The box says 1630fps for the stinger and 1850fps for the cci jhp mag. Really don’t think there’s much more the 22mag can do besides maybe have a range advantage

    • @efficientinthefield
      @efficientinthefield  Před 3 měsíci

      When you get this light in grain weights, grains really begin to matter. A 40 grainer has a 25% mass advantage over the 32 grainer and it's going faster. It won't matter much on small creatures, but you'll definitely get less penetration with the 32.

      @@efficientinthefield yea no doubt heavier faster will always hit harder but at the end of the day I don’t think it’s that big of a difference between the two to justify the cost of the 22mag ammo. I just wanted one lol. They both will make a squirrel rabbit or any other small game just as dead as the other 😁. The 22mag will just extend the range is really the main benefit. Seems like a sweet little rifle though for $300. Takes 10 round mags. I’ve only put a few rounds through it but so far seems pretty accurate and reliable

    Ive never understood why people choose a 22lr as a doomsday hunting rifle. A single shot 12 gauge will take all game in north america more efficiently, and you can get the caliber adapters to shoot other ammunition if 12 gauge is hard to find. The only thing 22 has going for it is its quiet and has lighter ammo. 12 gauge has the self defense bonus too if if youre ar15 goes down. Its just a more versatile weapon for woodland environments

    22 short's been around since the civil war, 22lr since about 1880 or so That's a lot of years ahead of the 1908 9mm, 1911 .45. 1937 357. and a lot, lot more guns are chambered in 22lr than any other caliber. Millions and millions more, especially when you leave out longarms.from the consideration. Longarms are rarely used either defensively or offensively, in non-military applications. So the "handgun only' classification DOES make sense in this case I'd say it's QUITE likely that the 22lr has killed more people than any other pistol rd, in non-military applications.

I was trying for the head an neck but mostly hit shoulders an upper torse. I thought Bella used a .22 short, or .22 long, I don't think it was even a .22lr. And I don't want to meet a grizzly with a 12 guage much less a .22. I also think .22 mag is a much better round for smaller predators like coyotes. Like .22lr, .22 mag is often under estimated. That said I don't want to be shot by either of them. Neither would be my first choice for self defense. I live in the land of the golden hoard, I would rather have something like a 12 guage, or an AR 10 to deal with threats.
    My wife will only shoot a .22 though. So if I have to carry it out on foot, I would rather have something she can/will shoot if possible. No-one can be on watch 24-7.
    And honestly my problem is going to be getting somewhere with water, long before I am worried about putting food on the table. So for us building a community will probably be more important than hunting.
